Best USB Soundcard

[size=3 font="times new roman"]Okay so my brand new $2000.00 DELL I7 Laptop has a VERY cheesy microphone input.  My $600.00 HP laptop purchased in 2001 has a way better quality mic input but it is Windows XP and will not run Sonar 8.5.3.  So I have two questions:  (1) Will a USB Microphone/soundcard allow me to record vocals and bypass the DELL cheesy soundcard and if so, (2) which is the best USB soundcard that is NOT super expensive?  Thanks in advance!

it really depends on your budget and if it's just vocals you want to record.

I use a USB mic, BUT 2 things.. I don't record vocals all the time AND I have a decent enough playback card.. the thing is , you can only normally use 1 asio driver.. so you have to use a USB mic  in MME mode.. which for me is fine enough, as I switch back to asio after

it will allow you to bypasss the onboard mic, sure.

you might find a better option for you is to use a usb card, with a mic input  BUT a normal mic.. and the interface may need phantom power for the mic.

if you do get a USB mic , http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1618556 might be of help

but regardless , I'd still recommend a better sound card than the on-board and maybe an audio mic..

it depends on you, you live near any pro audio shops? go have a look if you do.. but the USB mic I have does pick up a lot. it was based on an normal audio mic (samson c03)

Yes Fog I will want to record insruments also.  So maybe it should also have a Phone and RCA input in addition to an XLR input.  USB soundcard only is good since I do have several mics to use.  Did you mention what USB Soundcard you were using?

Hello FOG, I checked out your link and it answered my above question.  I guess I asked my initial question wrong.  It is a USB Soundcard that I need because I have microphones already.  Thanks very much for your input and answer to my question.  Yes, you did a good job with the link you provided.

I used to have an M-Audio Black Box.  It was my 2 channel USB i/o plus guitar amp model plus XLR input.  Unfortunately, it stopped booting up.  Not a lot of use, never moved, smoke free room etc.  So I have a thumbs down for M-Audio.

"Best" USB soundcard is really open ended.

The best multi channel is much different than the best stereo interface.

I'm currently curious as to the best under $100 USB interface.  But maybe that should be a separate post...

Im confused, what you think a stereo interface is? All multi channel interfaces can record and output stereo

You usually get what you pay for. A $1000 interface is going to be better thabn a $200 interface.
To the original poster, Do not get an USB mic. Get an audio interface and a large diaphram condensor mic or even an sm57 mic.
USB mics suck. I dont know how else to put it, but they are not ready for recording

What's your budget?  I know you said not a lot, but that means different things to different people. :)

I'm using Cakewalk's UA-25EX and am completely satisfied with it.

Click the 'products' tab at the top and you'll be able to look at Cakewalk's line.

Go read the Hardware section of this forum where this topic is on going for the last 15 years or more. Asking random opinions in a software forum is a backwards way to do your research.
Also go to an on line music retailers if you click on sort by price you will quickly see the lowest priced interfaces, then start reading up about them.
Be warned , those sites also have reviews but they are mostly people who buy things and don't no how to use it so they go there to complain.

because you actually own one ? and you know they are already based on the analog mic's technology?

making such a statement is rather sweeping and moreso ill informed IF it's a case you have never owned or used one and class all the mic's "the same"

I have an m-audio ozone, but you can't buy them any more. that has XLR  etc in.. BUT the win 64 bit drivers for it are not working as should, so I'm gonna get another "card".. but I want one thats a keyboard also.. which is the hassle.

with my main rig (desktop) I have a delta1010LT , thats what I was using the USB mic with (without issue ;) ) . but since you already own mic's you'd better to look at something that supports them

you have looked here for a start >

A USB mic is not going to solve a cheesy onboard soundcard.

You could get good sound into computer.

    a) But you need low latency monitoring of what you record and what you are listening to.
    b) and better quality when mixing

Only a proper music soundcard will give you that.
So go with suggestions for soundcard and separate mic.

It all depends on what you are going to use it for, how you plan to do recordings not just now but in the future.
There are some good, reasonably priced interfaces with one or two mic inputs which output to the computer via USB, which is great if you're just recording vocals, and think that will be all you want to record in the future (around £100).
Spend a little bit more to get a mixer with a stereo USB output and you can also plug in your keyboards and other equipment without having to unplug them when you want to change instruments (around £150 - 200).
Spend a little more and your mixer/interface will send a seperate output for each channel of the mixer/interface to your computer (£200-500).

Really? Sonar 8.5.3 came out before Windows 7 so it ran on XP quite well.

$2000 for a laptop? That seems awfully high.
