Best Way To BLEEP Dialog ?????????????????????????????????
So you know the "bleep" effect they use on TV to bleep out profanity? -- I was trying to figure out the easiest way to do this in Sonar, assuming you have a recorded track of "bleep-able" dialog. The ways I thought of were: 1) Dragging a "bleep" sound clip onto the clip of the recorded dialog and duplicating/stretching it to the appropriate lengths while removing those sections of the dialog clip. 2) Get a soft-synth with a sine-wave generator and sidechain its audio to the track's output audio so that when you record MIDI notes, the synth "bleeps" the dialog track's audio with the sine wave. Would there be a better way to get this "bleep" effect? How would you "bleep" dialog using Sonar? Has anybody made a dedicated VST for this simple purpose?

good idea chuck. it is a recording right? not live? if its live i'd put it on about a 3-6 sec delay to cover yur arse if you miss one. if its a recording i like chuck's way. alot less work than punchin 'em in or draging. if you dont like that. maybe hit the marker button every time you hear one and then go back and punch beeps in at the markers.. the big places have a voice recignition system that filters them out i think..

No just automation in Sonar. You can increase the volume on the beep track when needed and decrease the volume on the voice track.

Isn't there a comping trick whereby muting one track (maybe a layer) will unmute another and vice versa? I think I saw this in a Cakewalk video. Grouped clips perhaps? If that's true you could insert a track of your bleep sound, which was the entire length of your project and simply mute the offending words which would unmute the bleep track in those chosen sections.

I don't see how its hard. It may take some time, but hard, I don't think so. Its not going to be any harder then using automation on volume anyway. I do that all the time.

Just create a an audio clip 3 to 5 seconds long (which is probably much longer than you will actually need) and just copy and paste it in to cover up the bad words. Slip-edit it so that it covers only the area you want it to. I think 1000Hz is commonly used for bleeping properties. The tone can be generated in many ways. i would probably use this: http://www.world-voices.com/software/nchtone.html because I already own it.

This is a very easy process using Adobe Audition. Simply highlight the offending audio and replace with a tone or silence. I don't know how you might do it in Sonar other than try some of the suggestions above. A common practice we use at the radio station is to highlight the offending audio and reverse it. That makes it inaudable and maintains the beat. If you have a multitrack and just the vocal track is the problem, I would mute the word and not use a beep. This is common in "radio edit" tracks we receive for broadcast. Good luck.

Yes - it's easy to set up. Start by muting one track (the beep), then quick group it with the audio track. Now, hitting mute on EITHER track will toggle them both in opposite directions, so muted become unmuted and vice versa.
