Best Way To Fade In/Out of Recordings With SONAR 8?

I've been doing most of the recording at my church and we've been using SONAR 8 Producer to do it all.

One thing I haven't figured out how to do is how to fade in and out of recordings. What's the best way to do this in SONAR?

One way would be to use a Master bus volume envelope.

One way to do this would be to enable Automation Write Enable on the Master Bus fader, and fade in, fade out using the fader. Disable Write Enable when done and make sure Read Enable is checked.

Another way would be to create a volume envelope on the master bus manually and draw in the fades. Either way you do it you can always edit the envelope afterwards.

It's simply that Sonar is not that great at things I would call mastering tools. In my studio it is the Multi track only.  Some don;t seem to mind suffering through the tricks to get the job done, but when you used something else that does it better why would you even bother. There's nothing like dedicated software that deals with stereo files and is much more user friendly at it. I use Wave Lab and I use it for any rendering of tracks and for mastering. Once installed these programs will show under the "Tools" menu.

This is a free program that I've personally never used it, but it looks like it will do the job too. It has a simple fade in , fade out button.

There is a free trial of Wave Lab you could use, But the process to get it is a bit of a PITA

I have exprience with audacity, but I hadn't considered it because I didn't want there to be any loss of quality from multiple exports.

The best way to do it is to have all your tracks and buses eventually routed to a master bus and to use a volume envelope on the master bus. Putting a fade out on a project would take just a few seconds. No need to use any software but Sonar to do it.

Haven't learned to work with busses yet. I create a group and insert or draw a fade. Can also have other groups for cross fades etc.

I'm curious.  Why do you need additional software for something as simple as a fadeout?  What's wrong with using a volume envelope in Sonar?

Because I like the way you can highlight the wave and apply exactly what you want. With envelopes its guess work and always need fussing with. Some people are good at envelopes, I hate them......it's just me so don't worry.
And you don't technically export when working with the Tool menu, The file opens in the other software, you work on it and save it, Sonar re-loads the track. There should not be any issues, if there is then why do we bother with digital.
Sonar is an awesome multi track recorder, it's just not that great at  wave editing and mastering.

how about putting your mouse over the top right of a clip and drag in backwards and that should give a fade. I do this to all tracks to give the fade to the projects

Bounce to tracks (no dither) to get a wave file. Then draw the volume envelope, and bounce to clips.

Then export and dither as needed.

======================
Also:
Buses are your friends:

All the tracks are sent to buses for processing and combining:

Guitars to Guitars All, and then to Instruments All

All Drums to Drums All,  and then to Instruments All

Vocals Main, and background to Vocals ALL

And then all buses go to the MASTER MIX bus.

And this goes to MAIN OUT bus which is sent to the audio device.

============================

The MAIN OUT bus controls the monitoring volume sent to the audio device.
The MAIN OUT bus does NOT have "effects."
The MAIN OUT bus has monitoring tools: Voxengo Span, vintage meter, Panipulator (required).

The MASTER MIX bus is used for bounces. All final effects are in the bin.
This bus is output to the MAIN OUT bus.
The MASTER MIX bus may have volume envelopes for fades and misc. adjustments.

I add at least two blank tracks labeled MIX1 and MIX2, to projects. These output to the MAIN OUT.   NOT directly to the sound device.
No need to bypass the effects/eq, or change the volume setting, for the MASTER MIX bus when listening to a mix track.
I then solo the mix track to listen to the mix(s).

And because the MAIN OUT bus volume is the same, I can compare, audibly and visually, the mix with original tracks.
Per CJ's insight, if the mix does not sound correct, before I do anything else, I use control-z (undo) to remove the mix clip, and the wav file from the disk. This means I have fewer orphaned audio files.

I change the name of the mix tracks (add the date) before bouncing-to-tracks so the wav file will have a reasonable name.
When a mix is happy, I copy the mix wave files to a folder in the CD projects folder for CD creation. I use Sony CD Architect. This program reads 24 and 32 bit files and applies dither during CD making.

This way I do not have to worry about dither until it matters. I do not have to remember, or make note of, which files have been dithered/made to be 16 bits. All files are 24/32bit. And I seldom use the export function of Sonar, except when directly needing a 16 bit file.

=========================

ALSO: I have modified Jonas' template, using his bus structure, effects,... for my normal template. And then created track templates to use with projects as needed.
