Once again, as per my previous post, it has to be 'Dirk Firkel's "Oh Holy Night".

a question for you Canadians: what's a hooser, anyway?

From Wikipedia

The term "hoser" also refers to an era in hockey before the ice resurfacing machine came into use. The losing team had to hose off the ice. The term "hoser" can then be construed to mean loser.

From somewhere else

Canadian term popularized by the McKenzie brothers referring to someone clumsy or stupid who drinks beer excessivly.

Hi space_cowboy-
I love Sleigh ride
But
I also love the theme song to Peter Gunn

LOL! Yep, I can only tell what's coming next depending on the month. Jan through Oct, probably Peter Gunn. Nov-Dec, probably Sleigh Ride.

The "Da da da da da da da da " could go either way, though, I agree! I guess it's a seasonal thing, but I'd love to hear them combined, now that you mention it!

I really like Snowman's Land off of Keith Emerson's Christmas Album. Actually, the whole album is very inventive with all sorts of different styles and sounds on it. Don't think there is any other Christmas album out there that is similar to this. The song Variations on "O Little Town of Bethlehem" is awesome too.

ORIGINAL: kwgm

Since I was child, I've enjoyed the choral adaptation of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians.

I had a 33-1/3 recording of this performance then, but still haven't found it on CD.

Still have it in my head, however!

I'm amazed that no one has mentioned what is probably the quintessential Christmas song . . . "Silent Night" originally written by Franz Gruber and sung with an acoustic guitar accompaniment. It's not Christmas without it.

My other 2 "Best" Christmas songs:
"White Christmas"
"Hark, the Herald Angels Sing"

Yes... I LOVE demented Christmas music, like:

"Walkin' 'Round in Women's Underwear" (to Walking in a Winter Wonderland)

"The Italian 12 Days of Christmas" (...and a bowl full of parmesan cheese)

"Its the Most Fattening Time of the Year"

"Hey You, Get Offa My House"

"The "What's It To Ya?" Chorus"

"The Buttcracker Suite"

and one of my favorites "Santa's Wearing Women's Clothes" with Dean & Jerry (... and a pair of panty ho-ho-hose).

So many best and worst have already been identified, it's hard to improve on this list.

Best - O Holy Night (but not that "Dirk Firkel" version -- what an abomination)

Worst - Feliz Navidad (Jose Feliciano)

I vote for Elvis and "Blue Christmas" as the best. The entire Christmas Record is a classic.

Here's a Willie Nelson, Stephen Colbert ditty that I suspect will be a future Classic:

As for worst, my vote is for the barking dog, jingle bells song.

For an under appreciated song, check out Jim White's "Christmas Day" from his excellent No Such Place release.

Hi, Dave,

Looks like you and NW Smith agree about the dog barking Jingle Bells. But, I still love it because it makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it. Don't exactly know *why* that is, but it's always affected me that way. I'm laughing now just thinking about it. I may be more than slightly demented (or drunk). Well, OK, I'm definitely slightly more than demented. But I'm not drunk (yet). ;>)
