Best, Worst and Oddest Christmas Songs?

OK Totally off topic.

Your top 3 Christmas songs (don't participate if you find this p-uc).

Best
Christmas Island - I think Leon Redbone did the best version
Mele Kaliki Maka - I will go with Bing on this one
I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas - Shirley Temple I think.

Worst
That Brittney thing about wanting her baby back. Though with supervised visitation, it is probably appropriate
Do THey Know It's Christmas - the Live Aid Thing. Hey, lots of countries don't celebrate it. Get over it.
Our Love Is Like a Holiday - I could swear I have heard an N Sync version of this. I know there is a Michael Bolton version. Unfortunately it is on a Christmas CD I have. Its a shame I can't scratch it so that it just totally skips it.

Oddest
The Cheech and Chong Santa and his Old Lady. Timeless. "I can dig that man cause that's a dangerous gig"
The Chipmunks Christmas Don't Be Late "I still want a hula hoop"
I'm a Christmas Tree - WIld Man Fischer - wow - totally out there past 2 standard deviations.

You?

Merry Christmas or whatever is acceptable to your culture. Seriously.

Some people call me Maurice

Favorites: too many too list, but...

For ancient lyrics as well as the setting (lyrics go back at least to the 9th century): O Come, O Come Emmanual
For melody in particular: Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming
For sheer fun: Go Tell It on the Mountain

    Worst:
By far in a landslide victory (and also very, very odd): Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer
    Blue Christmas
    Here Comes Santa Claus

    best
Fairy tale of new york.. the funny thing is there are 2 versions.. and they keep playing the unclean one in the shops and don't realise

do they know it's xmas? they did different versions if memory serves.. the UK one has got a lot of names on it.. =) dunno about the other ones.. wasn't the worst.

    worst
any of the **** that simon Cowell puts out to try to get a number 1.. this year it's a cover of Jeff Buckley I think.. re-used.. I mean they did a version with american idol and used the same backing track for the UK version, just a different singer

    oddest
that spaceman song by Chris de Burgh.. and it went la la le la le la le la... I hear that a lot over they years.

oh and cliff richard turns up every year with a song *sigh* he should give it up.. it's not smart or clever.hehe

Since I was child, I've enjoyed the choral adaptation of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians.

I had a 33-1/3 recording of this performance then, but still haven't found it on CD.

Still have it in my head, however!

Oh, let me add the worst --- that stupid "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer."

Honorable mention for Mel Torme's "A Christmas Song" sung by Nat King Cole. (aka Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire).

As usual you pipped me on both accounts, Maurice. "I'm a Christmas Tree" was my best AND worst! Gotta love the Wild Man.

So let me just put in a consolation prize winner. "Christmas in Jail" by the Rockin Guys.

The other folks in the pit for the production of Peter Pan I'm currently playing (the trombone chair) have been going on about this song called 'The Christmas Shoes" which sounds really terrible but which I have not heard. Apparently, it's all about the emotional manipulation...

    Hi-

One of my favorites and at the same time one of the weirdest to me is the standard "Carol of the Bells".

I never get tired of hearing it when it's done well, but where is the joy?;)] It's relentlessly in a minor mode. Just goes to show you the mode is not necessarily the message,..

Oh, and I absolutely *love* "Sleigh Ride". Can't 'splain it, but for me it somehow captures the Christmas spirit perfectly. It's just so happy from start to finish. I've never heard it sung, but I think the lyrics would be superfluous.!

    Thanks-

    -Susan

gosh, you just made me remember.. jon bon jovi did an R2D2 Christmas or something? I remember seeing it on UK tv one year.. vangelis did the music.. did I laugh.. heck I had to pick myself up the floor.. I think he was wearing a rather "fetching" jumper knitted by his Aunt Dorris.. If Susan like him (I dunno), well maybe that video would take off her crush on him...haha

    I love Sleigh ride
    But
I also love the theme song to Peter Gunn

I always figured the two could be combined

    Remember, Peter Gunn goes
Da da da da da da da da
Da da da da da da da da
    Sleigh Bells
Da da da da da da da da
    Ringing
Da da da da da da da da
Oh yes its lovely weather for sleigh ride together with you
Da da da da da da da da

    It totally fits.

    Susan,
I sing Sleigh Ride and really enjoy the song also. Each year I perform at the local Children's Hospital and do about an hour of holiday music; Sleigh Ride usually goes over pretty well. This year we are hosting a party for about 50 or so guests and I'll be doing a set then also.

My favorites to perform beside Sleigh Ride:

    Christmastime is Here (Vince Guaraldi)
    The Christmas Song (Mel Torme)
Jingle Bell Rock (Not Hall and Oates)

    The worst Christmas songs:
Anything that twists and mangles the spirit of peace and fellowship; there's lots of them, of and course plenty of people that hate Christmas. They can all wallow in their misery or join us in merry celebration. Their choice.

    Happy Holidays,
    Paul

+1 for Bob and Doug McKenzie - and on that topic, a question for you Canadians: what's a hooser, anyway?

Another +1 for Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas". Lake at his most operatic.

A candidate for worst song: check out this prank posting in the Songs forum.

Worst: Litte Drummer Boy ... sorry but that music makes me want to gag!
