Best drum software for R&B/Hiphop??

I am looking for virtual drum software with some quality R&B/Hiphop sound samples. I am looking into EZDrummer and Session Drummer 2, but they seem to be more suited for rock from the sound samples. Any help??? (I'm recording with Sonar 6 Studio Edition)

I get by just using VELOCITY with some great samples (made even more great plucking .wav files from the new Proteus Packs) and Microtonic for drum synth sounds.

Rapture + Step Sequenzer makes a neat drum machine, in the expansion packs there are some nice HipHop/RnB drumsamples from RGC, Rene I believe?

The mpc groove template is pretty nice to use as well.

Listen to the Hip Hop expansion pack samples online to see if it is what you want. I decided to get it just to have more options for SD2.

i don't think that session drummer is going to be flexible enough for you. have a look at the ezdrummer claustrophobic kit, the sounds and gui are really easy to work with. and check out guru like the other guy said.

I would add RMX as another option to seriously consider...

    Stylus RMX (Product page)

Tracks made with RMX Of particular relevance for you most likely would be the following demos on that page...

    Thats the spot

    Spoonbread

    Phonattik

    Cooker Booker

    Sratchmosphere

    Stylin

Of course these are just demos. The sounds and style can be whatever you want them to be.

Stylus RMX has about 10,000 sounds, a superb and diverse set of Hip Hop and RNB drum kits and loops. It is absolutely ideal IMO for R&B Hip Hop.

Here is a SOS Mag review.

    Hi guys,

just a possibly stupid question, 100% serious though:

What would you use Guru for?

Is it for included sounds or midifiles or what? Don't really get it when you're talking about adding your own samples or BFD ...

Don't mean to offend anyone, just looking for the reason.

    Best Regards

Sonar's step sequencer + Battery 3. If need be, create custom kits from your own or 3rd party samples. I think some of the major hip-hop drum sample companies offer kits in Battery 3 format. This would be www.mpc-samples.com and www.gotchanoddin.com and www.mpcsounds.com

ugo audio's IronHead is a good electronic synth drum machine - no samples need apply and it ain't a roland clone either.

No offense taken Ludvig, sorry for the late post.

The same type of question could be asked - Why have DimensionPro and Rapture and whatever etc. synth?

There are differences. It depends on your workflow.

To answer your questions - Guru for patterns, Battery3 added in on linear tracks.

    Hope I explained that right.

I don't have Stylus. But if that's the flow you want, got for it.

Funny how synth vsti's always dominate our budget.

I use both Battery 3 and Stylus RMX and, yes, they complement each other very nicely.

If you are thinking of getting Stylus but do not already know this it has 250 drum kits of which at least 65+ are Hip Hop + RNB specific. Of course the kits are just starting points, as you can tweak the sounds way beyond their default state and save that as another kit building up your own individual kit library that can be easily reloaded back in to RMX.

To the left of the image...

the Bedroom kit is already loaded. That kit is from the Urban RnB kits list. There is another list with Vintage Hip Hop drum kits. But with drums one can be very experimental so you could easily expand your kit use even further in RMX by trying out the other drums sounds that ship with RMX without changing the kit. Simply click on the folder icon (next to the sound name) and you will be able to choose by kicks or snare e.t.c and sound type.

    In this image...

...I have clicked on the KICKS - Urban suite, and on the right in the Elements browser, it shows some (I would have to scroll down to reveal the full list) of the Kick sounds that are ideal for Urban RnB usage. As you can see there is plenty of choice but that is just forKicks, you have a similar choice for Snares, Claps, Hi hats e.t.c

Again you can easily take these individual sounds beyond their default state by using the 27 onboard FX ...

Tube Limiter, Tape Slammer, Modern and Vintage Compressors, Wah-Wah, Power Filter, 6 different Vintage/Parametric/Graphic Equalizers, Flame Distortion, Valve Radio, PRO-Verb, EZ-Verb, Spring Verb, Gate Expander, Stereo Imager, Flanger, 2 different Phasers, 3 BPM Delays, Retroplex Tape Delay and Radio Delay

...which are very drum specific or the other extensive sound tweaking features RMX offers.

I just thought you might not yet be aware of the extensive drum kits RMX already offers. You will also get 9 hours of tutorial videos and a huge reference manual that is easily accessible from RMX. Even if you are more interested in other genres, Stylus still has a very wide choice of kits to choose from.

My point is...you might want to at the very least explore all RMX has to offer before looking at Battery but...

...if you prefer to use both apps then by all means go that route. An RMX + Battery combo may very well suite your workflow better, but then again you may not need two drum plugs.

Up to you really. Battery and RMX are very capable plugs when used alone or together in any host.
