I have used both AVG and AVAST. In my experience, AVAST is much better!

+1 to MSE and Avast! I think they are both very good and do not mess up DAWs. MSE seems to be "easier" to set up since it pretty much does it for you! Avast! gives you more options with is both good and bad. --Larry

Thanks....MSE gets the vote, +1 MS Security Essentials is what I'd recommend. If you meet the following conditions, you don't need A/V software: - You're behind a firewire (router)
- You're not sending/receiving Email
- You're not doing general purpose Internet surfing (just going to trusted audio sites for updates/etc)

When I get a second DAW, that won't even be near a modem...but in the meantime...I need A/V protection...LOL

I have Comcast and get free Norton 360 with it. I have no problems at all. When I use Sonar I put Norton in sleep mode so it wont do anything and I disconnect from the internet and turn the wireless combo off... no problems. Of course MS essentials is free too I think... J

I guess most any AV would be fine with a DAW if you disable it! I think the OP was interested in an AV that could be functional while using the DAW and be connected to the www. --Larry

J Jeez... I have comcast and didn't get the Norton cause the last time I had Norton filled my hd, it took over everything and slowed my puter about 50%. That was a few years ago though. You say it works quietly and efficiently now? John

You say it works quietly and efficiently now? John I am not having any problem with it and it has the "sleep mode". I have not tried to remove it or completely shut it down, I haven't needed to. I had big problems with McAfee back when they Adelphia offered it... I would turn it off in services, set it to manual, and it would quickly turn itself back on... For me, on this machine, Norton is no problem. DPC latency (disconnected from internet, wireless combo off, and Norton in sleep mode) stays around 100 drops to around 80 and peaks around 125. If MS Essentials is working for a lot of people and you aren't sure... I'd go with MS just to be safe... but as I said, I am having no problems with Norton... nothing like McAfee... pffffttt. I'd trust Jim more than me and the next machine I get will not need AV... Julien
