Best inexpensive headphones for drummers
My son is a drummer and needs a set of headphones that will block some of his drum sound so that he can hear the song he's trying to learn on his iPod or stereo while he's playing. What's a good recommendation for a good price -- maybe about $30? Mark

Noise canceling ear buds are likely best. Regular ear buds (ie: the ones that come with ipods) don't seal the ear canal, so a lot of outside sound gets in - but noise canceling ear buds will help in that regard. The difference is that they look like little plugs that go in the ear, not just 2 mini speakers. Usually they will come with 2 - 3 different sizes of outer rubber (the plug) to fit different sized ears. Places like Best Buy will have quite an assortment of these ranging in price. I'm not sure what is available (and recommended) in a $30 range, but maybe someone will have a suggestion or two. I think this is a prime example of "you get what you pay for", however sometimes their are hidden gems that only a few know about in the lower price ranges.
Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take! Our drummer put a set of smaller open style walkman phones inside a set of Ear protection cans. The walkman phone are the good ones he paid $50 for them I think. Safety yellow is optional! Anyhow he claims he tried a bunch of serious gear and nothing worked as good as this does. He's done a lot of studio work with them.

I use Yamaha RH-5Ma cans... About $30 here I really like my $15 set of Creative EP-630 ear buds here The buds are my favorites, they were $80 when I got the first set..... very comfortable and the sound easily compares to headphones in the $200 to $300 price range. I compared them recently at a music store....and did not see enough of a difference to warrant buying the cans. The guy behind the counter agreed that the buds were very comparable and wanted to know the model.

Well those look much more official but I like the idea you can play double duty for leaf blowing! Here's a more esthetically pleasing model in basic black $14.95 Home Hardware or Rona Sony Headphones = $ 3.95 - $ 69.95 Sony Store depending on level of distortion you are willing to put up with.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I should have mentioned he does not like the noise isolation type earbuds, with silicon tips. He likes and keeps borrowing my Sony MDR-V700 cans, and that's gotta stop! :) But they're a little pricey. Now Cactus' suggestion above with noise isolating cans and regular earbuds might do the trick, but a descent set of isolating type headphones might be more convenient. I've seen some AKGs in music stores on sale for about $30 before, but don't know how well they isolate, or how good they are.

The Creative Ep-630's are noise isolation buds................they are not at all like the el-cheapo buds that come with most Ipods. They have 3 different sized soft rubber cups that are easily changed to the size that works best for you. With the proper size cups, they seal exceptionally well to keep the outside noise down, and that also improves the bass response tremendously. When I said the sound quality compared favorably with the higher priced headphones, I was not kidding and that is due to the noise canceling and bass response from the exceptional seal you get from the cups.

I bought a pair of Logitech Ultimate Ears 200 for about $30 two days ago to use in my woodworking shop. I bought them on Amazon with free 5 day shipping. They are noise isolating earphones as opposed to noise canceling. They reduce outside noise by 26dB, sound decent, and are pretty comfortable. They do a good job of reducing outside noise. They come with 5 different sizes of ear inserts for a good fit. Between songs, I noticed that I had forgotten to turn the dust collector off, which is annoyingly loud without the ear phones. http://ultimateears.com/en-us/products/200

Basically if a set of headphones is closed back with no vent porting it will probably do some isolation. Drums are very loud when played full out and you stand a chance of damaging your hearing by turning up non isolating cans to loud. Your hearing is worth a lot more than $30 , so I would go for a full isolating type. Those Leafblowers models are certainly certified to do the job. Then you can put just about anything in there I guess. I'm even thinking you could remove the speakers from a damaged set of phones ( I got lots of those) and somehow mount them inside the hardware store cans. ( silicone?) Hmmm..$14.00 cool. Another thing to remember is it is recommended you never use any type of in ear buds with out protection circuits ( re = compressor) - in line with them. They too can damage your hearing if misused.

I am not a drummer. But I wanted earbuds so that I can listen to my iPod at the gym where they are playing fairly loud background music. The problem is that my ear canal is not that wide and not really straight. I couldn't really get the earbuds to stay in place, and the acoustic isolation was not that good. A few weeks ago, I found these things: Comply TX-400 Series Foam Tips (small). These foam tips (similar to ear plugs) have solved my problem. The acoustic isolation with my V-Moda earbuds is now quite good. Wilko

Ha I looked at that web site and if you scroll down you will see he is also recommending the ear buds inside the leafblower cans, so looks like a good idea for drummers. Under $30.

1 More tripple drivers are the eabruds specially made for drummers. Or you can check audio technica M50x as well. Sennheiser urbanite would be a great choice. So any one of the above mentioned will never disappoint your son.
