New Country - Jean Luc Ponty I was still listening to this when Jason was about 3 years old (1978) and he used to say "Play dak dak like dat". For that reason alone it's one of my fav intros.

I have had an amazing experience with an intro but cannot point to it or let anyone hear it unfortunately but I can at least talk about it. It was in a live Glenn Campbell concert. He came to Australia quite a few years ago and brought a stellar band and a small orchestra as well.
It was the intro to Wichita Lineman. It lasted at least 10 minutes and I am not joking. It was hard to tell what the song was or where it was going to go but it was just amazing. They eased into it and Glenn did like a long guitar solo, all this before he even sang. But somehow they managed to ease into the progression just as it was about to start and it was like magic. The very second you figured out what was about to happen he sang the first line... I am a lineman for the county....
This is a beautiful song and it has a deep emotional effect on me. When I hear it now it still has that effect. If you look at any Youtube videos of him playing live he does not do the long intro so it is hard to find if at all but it happened at this concert though. I will never forget it. Seeing Glenn live was one of the highlights of any live gig I have ever heard and I have heard a few good ones that is for sure.

That's my favourite song, I think it's a superlative piece of writing matched with a perfect performance.

Certainly not "the best", but this was "my best" intro. Unfortunately it was done like 20 some years ago with a HW sequencer and my not quite state of the art by current standards (or even then) cassette 4 track, so... Always enjoyed this band ... I think it helped that the vocals were always tight and really well done, with excellent moments all around. Not quite as good, but a bit more in the progressive vein of things, is Lana Lane and the Rocket Scientists, from LA. Lana has the same similar range and power as this band, however, I always thought the lyrical style in Lana's work, needed a bit more poetic, and emotional definition, as at times it does not come as clear, concise and as well defined as it has been for HEART for many years ... as one can say, you knew it was from the heart ... right from the start!
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I was going to mention the very same Elton John piece and you beat me to it. I actually even have this one in 5 channel SACD remix - it totally works in surround (not that I have all that much in my collection by Mr. John). The other one I wanted to "nominate" is this - Chris Rea's Road to Hell: http://youtube.com/watch?v=abZlWqVeLzg Actually, the "intro" is almost the first half of the song, so I'm not sure this one counts.
