Best laptop for recording with X1
Looking for recommendations. Not a specific brand/model as much as system specs that would lead to the optimum machine for (portable) recording with X1. Hit me with your Best, as well as your Minimum (hopefully prioritized) requirements. That can help making cost/benefit tradeoff analysis. Me and my pocketbook thank you in advance :)

I noticed that no one has responded to your post so I figured I'd at least give my thoughts on it so you have something to go by. Unfortunately I can't tell you much except that if I was looking of a good configuration for a recording laptop I would look at what the various folks that manufacture DAW laptops were currently using in their models. Also if a laptop was going to be my primary system for recording I would probably look to purchase one from one of these reputable DAW specialists. I have a laptop that works quite well for Sonar, but it's very much my secondary DAW, and even my primary DAW is getting a little long in the tooth by current standards, but I'm a hobbyist and it does what I need it to with little issues for the track and plugin count I'm generally running with. Check out Jim Roseberry here on the Sonar forums and the systems he builds at http://www.studiocat.com/3/index.php/Home - he does consultations, if I recall correctly, so if you have questions you might want to contact him.

You will struggle with any laptop as XI like a large screen. Any quad core with 4 GB of memory will do thew job. 7500 rpm disks. The screen size will be the issue.

Hit me with your Best, as well as your Minimum (hopefully prioritized) requirements. That can help making cost/benefit tradeoff analysis. Me and my pocketbook thank you in advance :) I use a 17.3" with 1920x1080 max resolution which is my "minimum" (more specs below). Most only go to 1600 so check the specs carefully. I run Win 7 x64 with 16 GB ram (though 8 is good) and 2 internal 750 GB 7200 rpm HDDs (one for song storage). It came with a Radeon HD 7260 graphics and Beats Audio sound, Blueray drive, a lighted keyboard, 2 video ports & 1 HDMI port. It can run 3 external monitors. Cons are only 3 USB ports (4th one is power only, what a rip), and non dockable HDDs (no one has thought of that yet but it's a dream of mine. Even so these HDDs are really easy to access should I need to remove one). Expect to pay about as much as a nice desktop ($1500 +) but it was worth it for me cause I use it more than the desktop. Make sure the audio interface chosen plays nice with the new laptop before committing to that laptop (or vice versa)

@ fitzj - where are you finding 7500 rpm Hard Drives? I have only used 7200. Most laptops seem to want to use 5400 or Solid State. Laptop (7200rpm hardrives x 2) msi - GT780DX this is one of the only models with a LED keyboard.

HP DV7 series with as fast a processor and as much memory as you can afford. Load 64 bit Windows 7. Put your program on the main drive and use an external drive for data and song storage. Then you can port it back and forth to other machines....and you can use an external monitor with it, too. That's a real quick answer. There are a ton of machines you can use, but that solution is quick, easy to find (and/or replace) and will serve you well as a portable rig. As mentioned before, make sure your MIDI/Audio interface plays well with it <and has x64 drivers!>. Disable your wireless on the laptop while using Sonar...it messes with everything. Also disable any antivirus software when using Sonar. Good luck!
When one is doing the process of self-analysis, One should make sure that the Self that is doing the analysis is, in fact, sane. Sonar X3 (always patched to current) Win7X64 8gb RAM Quad Core AMD 3.6mhz TASCAM USB interface EMU 1616m PCIe interface w/breakout Rapture, Dimension Pro, Studio Instruments, Zeta 2, tons more of Cakewalk's software Tons of IK, NI Camel Audio and other softsynths, plugins M-Audio Keystation Pro 88

This is what i am using: http://www.asus.com/Noteb...obili_Lamborghini_VX7/ It has it's drawbacks like only 3 USB ports and Asus has AWFUL AWFUL customer service (seriously, only buy an Asus if you are willing to do al of your own troubleshooting), but it handles video editing and audio production well for an off the shelf machine. I trend to use a second monitor, but I have no problem working with just the one. Screensets and shift-d help a lot.

I have this one with three (yes THREE!!!!) internal 750gb 7200 RPM drives, 6GB of memory. I use the UAG1 interface. It serves as my travelling DAW and my main non-DAW workstation at home. It's a monster (in weight) but I know if I had to do remote recording it can handle it.

I used a stock Dell for better than three years with Music Creator... basically an off the shelf machine. The secret to success is not to use the lappy's sound card. Buy a good USB interface and you will have success.

I just bought a Dell 14R, i3 2350M, 6GB Ram, 500 GB HD, 2 USB3 ports, and E-Sata! The whole thing, after an easy rebate, was $389 out the door. This thing runs any full mix my desktop Q9450 runs! E-Sata is key for desktop-like performance...

My Dell XPS 15[L502x] works surprisingly well, with ASIO4all with the onboard realtek at 5ms[2.5/2.5] RTLatency[the extra buffer sliders in A4all are pulled left] and can just plug my guitar into the line in. Even the Waves maxxaudio JBL speakers[under chassis subwoofer] are very good sounding speakers and quite incredible for a laptop. I do run a double USB fan underneath[gaffer taped on] that really helps lower the temp as laptops always run hotter than desktops, but these USB fans are dead silent, and the internal almost never turns on so its super quiet. However, instead of getting an RME Fireface UC interface,I bought the desktop listed below, and I really love the having everything on both machines for security, and I do most mixing, final work on the desktop. I bought mine in April last year, with the then new i7 2630qm CPU,but now they have the more powerful i7 2670qm,but the HDD options,[in Australia]have become a tad lame,in that its now only an SSD or a 5,400 rpm,NO 7,200 rpm 750GB like I have, something to do with the HDD/flood situation maybe.[EDIT-Now in Oz we ONLY get the 750GB 7,200rpm,like before, which is good, but now there is NO option for SSD,weird,as even though the websites are country specific,ALL the orders, and assembly,is in the SAME place!] This is why apple is such a nightmare in Australia, the website here, has way higher prices than the US one,yet again, the products are made and shipped from the same location,a local politician,is demanding an enquiry, as to why apple is so much more expensive in Australia. I'm soo glad,I didn't get a Macbook Pro,and only have everything, all tied up to 1 fragile ,noisy, overheating device. There really is something to be said, with being able to have both laptop and desktop, both identical[software], for value for money, and peace of mind. Bob S.
