Best method for testing where to put acoustic panels?

I just purchased 6 Auralex SoloFlat 2ftx2ft Acoustics panels on the used market. I didn't think I should buy more than 6 at this point as I really don't know what I'm doing. I do know that I am getting SOME reflections so I want to do all I can to fix the situation.

1. What's the best way to test where I should put the panels without any kind of testing equipment? I have no idea where the reflection are coming from. My only reference guideline for putting up the panels is a video that says to use a mirror on the walls until I see the monitor from the listening position. My second question has to do with the dimensions of my room


the room is 10x11 and has a vaulted ceiling. From the listening position the high side of the ceiling is on my left...so 11ft high on my left and 9ft high on my right. The left wall has a closet and the right wall a window. I also have laminate wood flooring in here as well. Unfortunately I cannot change my listening position.

My second question:

2. Is there a chance I'll need some paneling on the ceiling as well?

That type of panel is specifically for damping early reflections, as opposed to bass trapping. You'll need at least 2 on the side walls and two on the ceiling. Put the remaining 2 on whichever of those is closest to your mixing chair.

Sit in your mixing chair and have someone hold a mirror up on the wall. When you can see the reflection of your speaker in the mirror, that's where you want to center the panel. This method can be dangerous on the ceiling, though, but you can guess the position pretty well by just looking up and picking a point halfway to your speakers.
