The Bluebird Sings

The Bluebird is a large diaphragm cardioid condenser mic (fixed pattern). It comes in a padded wooden box with a screw mount pop filter, and well-constructed shock mount. The powder blue Bluebird has the typical elegant look of a Blue mic, high build quality, and a sound that lives up to the name. On vocals this mic performs beautifully - both sung, and voiceover/spoken word. I have used this mic on several voiceover and music projects (through a Great River preamp) and it performs admirably. The sound is smooth, open, warm, and airy without the pronounced sibilant peak many sub-$1000 condensers exhibit. The low end and mids are clear and warm. The Bluebird is well suited for many tasks, from vocals to acoustic instruments. The manual states it would also be a great choice for sax, flute, clean guitar, violin, etc. I would have to agree. Without a doubt it is one of the best large diaphragm condenser mics in the sub-$1000 category.

Amazing

I recently bought this mic, and it's amazing. It is SO sensitive, and full of warmth and quality. I am using it to record seperate tracks and mix them, and I record vocals, acoustic guitar, drums, cello, and electric guitar. It works very well with all of those instruments.

Great Quality Mic

This has low self noise, it was much more transparent than my AKG Perception 220. If you don't have alot of money I would definitely recommend this to anyone. There are no pads but I think the sound reproduction quality more than makes up for it.

Very pretty microphone <3

i am in love with this pretty microphone. i have a rock and roll/ metal band and we love to use this microphone. are band name is mom, and we have good music/tunes, but this pretty blue microphone makes our voices sound like the cherping sounds of an ostrage (which is very VERY delightful). I really think you should by this microphone because of its lovely music you can produce with it. what a lovely mickrophone. very nice. cheap also. good deal. <3

I've got this mic. It's fabulous on a lot of voices (if you want to, go to www.soundclick.com/onevoicelumc and listen to "Praise You With the Dance". I recorded her vocals on the BlueBird).  It's fine on my vocals, too. I used it on one guy and it didn't sound great - he sounded better on my Rode NT-1000.

But the BlueBird has come down in price over the last year, it's a very nice looking mic and I think you'd be very happy with it!

For a fixed, cardioid vocal mic (non-tube) in that price range, I'd suggest you listen to the AT 4047 before you decide.  That's a very nice vocal mic.

Bluebird, AT-40xx, or Shure KSM-xx - all great microphones in that price range, and sadly, on any given day one of them is going to be better than the other two for some given application<G>!

If I had to start somewhere I'd probably start with the Shure KSM-32. It's probably the closest to neutral of the bunch. Then I'd add the AT or Bluebird, and I really couldn't guess which one!

Another microphone I really like for vocals, and it may be even less, is the Blue Baby Bottle.

To put things in perspective, right now my first call vocal microphones are (in alphabetical order<G>):
    AKG C-414EB
    Blue Baby Bottle
    Groove Tubes MD-1
    Neuman TLM-193
    Shure KSM-32

And when none of those spark my fancy I put up a Shure SM-58!

If I can't get a good vocal with one of those I call it a day!

Re:Best mic for me onder $600.00 from guitar center? 2009/11/10 12:23:02 (permalink)
The Pro Audio guys at the Nashville Guitar Center love the Blue Bluebird for $300. So do the guys in Memphis. I recently heard a pretty in depth sound check/mic comparison in which they compared many top line mics to the Bluebird. It beat them all, including a Neumann U87 ($3,400), to their ears and mine too. This mic is getting more and more attention, and for good reason.

They are also high on the Sterling ST69 for around $600 and I like the ST33 for $200. Both are mighty good ones.

The Shure 7b was the vocal mic on "Thriller" which I believe at one time held the record for most "pop" albums sold. It's around $350 I think.

I also have to mention one that is not presently carried at GC, but it's the Peavey PVM 22, which is consistently preferred by vocalists over the tried and true classic, the Shure SM58. These two are in the $100 range.

I don't want to confuse you with too many choices, but you can get a good one in your price range, or less. See if GC will let you do a little vocal test with the Bluebird and any others there you like. GC usually has a recorder set up and if you approach them right they will let you do a test. Just let them know you are serious about buying a mic but need a real sound check with YOUR voice to make the final decision. They have a good return policy also, so if you get it home and record your vocals a few nights and it just doesn't suit you, pack it all up nice and neat and return it and try something else.

All the ones listed above are good ones. A lot will have to do with your voice characteristics and how it fits with the particular mic. I would be surprised if you are not happy with the Bluebird though, the one you seem most interested in. For $600 you can get several very nice vocal mics.

I enjoyed the story I read recently about a certain pop star who was using a $15,000 vintage Neumann in the studio, but on stage was seen using the $100 SM58. The final analyses...the singer sounded great on both.

And speaking of "Bluebird," the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville is the country's premier open mic/singer-songwriter showcase. The best artists in the world showcase their voices and songs there and the house mic is the SM58. A lot of that gets recorded live there, too.

Let us know what you get and how you like it. I'm guessing you will like the Bluebird once you try it. The mic or the cafe.
