Best player for REX2 files?

Hi,

I know with Sonar you can just drag in Rex2 loops as audio, but if I want to play them with the ability to mess with the slices and trigger the loops myself, what's the best QUICK method...

I know in Kontakt I can make my own patches out of them, but it's kind of more work that I want to do. RXP is fine, but it being 32bit, it seems like it could lead to software issues.

Is there another easy option? I also don't really want to spend the $300 on Stylus RMX.

Thanks!

Have you tried RXP?

Yea actually it might have gotten missed in the middle of my message up there but I mentioned that RXP is fine but because its 32bit, I worry that it might lead to some stability issues and whatnot. I try to use 100% only 64bit stuff nowadays.

I see you have Komplete, maybe Battery 4? It handles them pretty well.

Re: Best player for REX2 files? 2016/03/04 13:28:17 (permalink)
A little update... in Kontakt 5:

1) Load a Rex
2) Click Wave Editor
3) Click Sync/Slice
4) Click Auto Find Empty Keys
5) Click the Powerbutton Next to Grid

It seems to lay out each of the slices on my keyboard and then have the loop playing on all the rest of the keys going up the keyboard.

Did I just solve my issue? Is that the best way to do this with Kontakt or is there a button/option I could be clicking that would make it even easier/quicker?

Thanks

Ooh I hadn't thought of battery... I'll take a look. And in my response I just posted, I seem to have a possibly easy working solution in Kontakt too. Just need to test it out some more.

I basically just want to be able to load these things quick and easy if I do end up buying a package of Rex files. I'm not big on having to build my own sample presets and stuff haha.

Well - it's not a simple "player" at all by any means, but I really love to "play around" with REX/REX2 files by importing them in Stylus RMX (from Spectrasonics). Once imported there are so may way's you can manipulate them. With the time designer you can make any drum loop (or other instrument loop) fit in any arrangement, and having the possibility to give slices (or groups of slices) give their own individual FX effect does not hurt either.

It is not cheap, but for me Stylus is one of the first things I use when I want to manipulate REX files. Still... The other named programs (like Battery) are a very good option too..

Hey Guys,
So I just tried Battery and that's almost PERFECT. So easy. Just load a rex and its split to each slice. However, it doesn't put the full loop on anything...

Now I COULD just load the full loops in Kontakt and the splits when I need them in Battery... But if anyone knows a way to make Battery put the full loop on one pad, that would be amazing (or a quick way to export a quick midi sequence of all the notes playing in order that I could just drag onto my track so it plays all the slices like the loop would be.

Thanks so much.

Related info from another Cake forum thread:  http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3381014
So, how does one preview THOUSANDS of .RX2 samples without having to load a DAW?

Turns out the free UVI Workstation has a built-in .RX2 sample player! I installed all of the sample folders in a '9V Audio' folder under my 'Loops - Audio' folder under 'My Documents'. To get to it with the UVI Workstation, you need to navigate from Devices, through C:, the Users folder, the current user folder, then the Documents folder. You get the idea. Highlight a sample, and it plays. Use the down arrow key to move through the samples. Works great!

So can Beatscape (play REX files). It's the only 32 bit plug I use in Sonar. It will also work in FL Studio.

Reaper has a batch file convert (under the file menu) will convert them (REX files) to .wav in bulk.  Seems to do a really nice job.  Sonar seems to get really confused on a bunch of these .rx2 files.  It pulls all kinds of odd tempos and mashes the slices something awful.  Pretty disappointed in Sonar's REX file handling with these.

So far Reaper's batch convert to wave seems the best thing I've tried.  You can drag and drop directories into the batch converter, so you can do a whole bunch in one go.  Disc space is a bit of an issue and you have to put the files somewhere but it's not unreasonable.

Haha that deal is exactly why I'm considering messing with Rex loops :-)

I'll have to try UVI Workstation, which I also have. But so far Battery seems like the quickest way to use slices and Kontakt seems like the quickest way to use the full loops. If only I could combine the process into one quick load of the slices from Key x - Key y, and then the loop in various pitches from the next Key on. Life would be perfect :-)

Wow it's perfect in UVI Workstation... Just click the Map button to switch to slices, and it even lets you drag in the notes perfectly as MIDI... which I'm not quite sure how that even works since I didn't realized midi data was stored in these Rex files.

Love it. Guess I'm buying that collection.

Take away default "Expand loop slices to individual slices" under preferences. Now Battery will load into one cell. Select the pad you have loaded with the full loop, click "Expand" in the engine frame of "Main" tab. Now Battery will slice it up to the following pads while still keeping loop in first pad.
