Just did a recording this past weekend using the Art Vista Virtual Grand:

http://www.rtpress.com/mp3/missno_dry_piano.mp3

I went the dry rock piano preset to contrast with a more mellow vocal yet to be mixed in.

I am a fan of Project5 Dimensions and Vsampler that shipped with Sonar 3. I use both when laying down piano tracks. Add a bit of BBE Sonic Maximizer and BANG !! those keys are crisp and sweet.

If you don't own it yet, then I suggest purchasing Cakewalk Project5, it's great for MIDI (works with Audio as well) . The Soft Synths are out of this world, especially Dimensions. Rewired with Sonar makes the 2 of them an awesome pair. Project5's Groove matrix may steer you away from Sonar for a little while with it's ease of composing and recording, so use Project5 with caution.

Peace ,

Thank You for this link !! I tried the shoot out against some of my piano sounds, and found many of the sounds in my synths stand up quite well to what's available. I downloaded the midi sample sequence, and tried many of the sample mp3's on the site....

Quite surprising to me, The Proteus 1, JV-880, JV-1010 with the "Sessions" expansion board, all stacked up nicely.

I heard a few that sounded better than what I have, but the sounds I already have seem to be adequate for me at this time.

Now I just gotta learn how to play.

I concur that the Art Vista is the closest to real sound I have put in the mix. I picked it up and put my Bosendorfer 290 on the shelf.

The Art Vista has a large range of piano sounds too, all very usable depending on your needs.

Phil,

Can you post something using the Art Vista?

I'd like to compare it to this:

http://dawpro.com/downloads/Piano.mp3

Try listening to that with headphones.

Steve, will do tonight. Can I attach things here? I am not sure so I may just send it to your site.

I just listened to your mp3. I think you will be very pleased with Art Vista. It has a more authentic sound than your MP3.

It does sound quite realistic, but as a professional piano tuner-technician, I find the slightly out-of-tune unisons bothersome.
- LW

You mean they didn't tune the pianos perfectly before taking the samples for Ivory? If so, that'd be very disappointing. Or is it something to do with the software? Just curious...

No, he is talking about the Art Vista. The Ivory pianos are probably the best on the market right now. This is from the same people who did the Kurzweil pianos before Kurzweil started having problems and fired all of their great engineers and developers. The pianos are top-notch. All around, probably the best investment of any out there, IMO.

But I do like the Art Vista. The thing is, he wanted to give people a true feeling of sitting down to an actual piano. So, it is a little rough around the edges compared to Ivory. But I find it sits in a mix really good. I haven't really heard any "out-of-tune" unisons, so I wonder which ones lylewood is referring to.

Oh, a cool feature of Ivory is that you can pick what kind of tuning you want for the instrument, and you can also change the perspective (audience vs player). It really is amazing.

Between these two, I don't think I'll be looking for anything else in the piano department for quite some time.

Be aware though ... Ivory is memory hungry. You better have at least 1 gig of RAM to really enjoy it. Even then you might be pushing it on some of the pianos.

Which is why I liked Art Vista too. It works for a lot of styles and in dense mixes.

Another reason I like Art Vista, it's fairly light in memory use. Ivory sounds intriguing however.

Steve, the wave file has been sent. It's not much, just some light tinkling on the keys.

The only thing I don't like about the Art Vista is that it seems like it takes an incredible amount of time to load a piano. Ivory pianos load much quicker, and they are bigger. Seems strange to me.

But, it is worth the wait.

Yes, Art Vista is slow. But occassionally the loads are very fast. Intermittent at best. I wish they would fix that.

Got it Phil.

Very nice in deed. Can't say I like it better though. I like them both. There's more room acoustics in the Alta Vista samples. That can be good and bad. Can make the instrument sound distant. I'm sure it's controllable.

Actually, your mp3 doesn't do the instrument justice. I just listened to the demos here:

http://www.artvista.net/VGP_Demos.htm

and they ARE impressive. The long sustains sound a little unnatural to my ear, but I'll bet it fits nicely in a mix.

Again... I like them both.

There were some drier samples I should have sent along. The one I sent was the Gospel setting so yeah it sounds like it was recorded in an old wooden church. The basic dry rock piano has been getting the most use here.

Anxious to try that Ivory though.

kurzman - Thanks for clarifying. I listened to the Ivory demos a while ago and found them rather impressive, so I was wondering.

But I do like the Art Vista. The thing is, he wanted to give people a true feeling of sitting down to an actual piano. So, it is a little rough around the edges compared to Ivory. I listened to the demos and noticed kind of a flanging with the sustained notes, maybe that's what he's referring to. With shorter notes and faster playing it has a lot of character though. Guess it depends on what you're after.

Be aware though ... Ivory is memory hungry. You better have at least 1 gig of RAM to really enjoy it. Even then you might be pushing it on some of the pianos.

Hehe! Well, at the time being its price would be my main concern.

Hi. I downloaded the piano that you posted here, but when I tried to open it with Sonar, the message read, the file is not compatible with this version of Sonar (Sonar 4.03 Studio).

any thoughts / ideas?

One drawback to those pianos is the velocity. Dave Grusin was going to use one on the film "The Firm" (great soundtrack for piano players) and then ended up abandoning the idea for most of it because the dynamics don't translate-you know you have from 1-127 with midi but the differnt velocities that your hands hit the ivories are God knows how many more than that.

I have a Yamaha Disklavier in my studio. I love it but there are definitely things that are funky with the velocities... I've heard pleny of times where I've played things and I know they didn't play back at the velocity I played them in with...

Also, there is a 500ms delay for the Yamaha CPU to translate Midi data into data that the solenoids can read to fire under the keys... So when I play tracks back, any tracks that have the Yamaha playing have to be shifted so that the piano lines up with the tracks.

Still a lot of fun, though. I use it more to record Midi piano tracks. There's something about playing piano tracks off of a piano then a keyboard that makes them sound more "Pianistic" on the midi track...

think you'd be able to contact me?

I have both. It depends on context for preference for me. Try them in a piano duet with the volumes balanced and set in the same space with your favorite convolution piano hall.

I just picked up the NI Akoustik Piano. First impressions: easy interface, very smooth sounding, nice choice of pianos, the darker piano's need just a touch of EQ. Not worked out the Sonar "bouncing" probs yet, though.
Overall, a nice package, more simple to tweak than my gigapianos.
Abit pricey, best price was at Florida Music Co.
