Best sounding drum machine

Please - no comments about using a real drummer. Which one has the best sounding kick, snare, cymbals, etc.
THANKS.

phsst. He said drum "machine"... Roland V-Drums though NI Battery 3. If you want to use DKFH, just drag the wav's into Battery, but "machine" = v-drums.

    Enjoy.

While I did say drum machine. BFD has me interested. Can I get the expansion pack and have it all up and running, or is there a sampling mechanism software also needed for the purchase?

Also, any other hardware recommendations? What about the Boss DR880?
    THANKS.

I second the smart loops kits... if you have a drum sampler already the thunder kit and tight kit are very cool, as is the new reference kit. nothing beats purrrfect drums for cymbals and HUGE toms though. i use them through Battery 2 and sometimes DR-008.

Really? I wasn't impressed at all. It sounds very digital to me. The sounds are good, don't get me wrong... but I thought we were talking about realistic. The hats/rides/crashes in DFHS do the best job of not sounding machined in my opinion. All other drums are easier to deal with than cymbals, but even with those I think they did a great job. Maybe it's just how we use them differently... but I haven't heard anything that sounded more realistic than DFHS.

I've used Alessis, Boss and Roland units. I now use PC Drummer. You can get a free trial of their PC-based drum kit at pcdrummer.com. It's very flexible, easier to program than many drum machines, and offers the ability to upload your own drum samples so you can have whatever sounds you like, whether synthetic or natural. It also allows for very fine control of hihat sounds, especially the "psssshap" sound of an open hihat closing. You can create your own shaps as brief or as long as fits the tempo of the song. It also prevents having to deal with another outboard piece of gear. If you really like the samples used in a particular drum machine, you can download them online somewhere and use them in PC Drummer, plus load in as many other sounds as you wish. Seems like a no-brainer to me since you're not limited to an single manufacturer's samples, plus it's exceptionally easy to program. You can make it sound as machine-like or as human as you wish. You can even edit your drum samples in a wav editor if you want to change the pitch, duration or tone of a sample to tune your drum kit to your song.

I use a dr-880 for all my music (which you can hear below) but i'm trying to find something a bit better. the dr-880 is the best sounding hardware drum machine for the $500 price range I believe.

it's downfalls are the cymbal sounds and how much of a pain it is to program. i wish there was a midi interface for it.

yes i know i can do it in sonar and then import it into the dr-880 but that's kindof a pain too.

Probably not realistic sounding enough for you but Rebirth is a kick to play around with and good for electronica and other contemporary sounds ... and it's free.

Hope this doesn't sound like spam, but here's one audio example of BFD used with Home Studio. I'm personally really happy with BFD, which is why we've been a dealer for years. It's probably the number one add-on when we sell a full daw Cakewalk based system. The link below has some demos with one of the stock BFD drums+ the new Percussion kit loaded into Home Studio 4. BFD is being triggered with one of our own midi Drum-Drums-Drums tracks. It's easy enough to make your own midi drum tracks with BFD on any of the Cakewalk programs. Calling up alternate drum pieces or entire kits is really easy.

As mentioned on the blurb on the link below, the drum pieces are not eq'd or treated, and are panned in a way to better hear the individual kit pieces that happen to be loaded. With all the various available expansion paks, there's virtually no limit to the drag & drop kit pieces you can use, as well as one can import various Toontracks pieces. It all works very well with the Cakewalk line...making our support of the combination of products pretty straightforward. Plus, as I mentioned, I just really think BFD are among the best sounding drums out there. Perhaps most importantly, you can tweak them to any degree you want. Including total control over ambience....including taking all the ambience away if you want to have that 70's "in a booth...or closet"...effect.

drum kit from hell superior. just check out the samples vs. bfd - it's clearly better and both use raw samples.

If you can find one, the old Alesis HR-16 had some very realistic sounds. I'm using the later SR-16 now, and it's nowhere near as realistic sounding. The later model Linn drims are quite good too.
