Best stock reverb? (X1 producer)
I know reverb should be subtle and I've learned to use it in a send condition with excellent results. I was about to buy one (Valhallaroom) when I decided I really didn't know all the free ones we already have very well. There is the Cakewalk set: FX Reverb, reverb, reverb mono studioverb 2, Then there is the Sonitus reverb And the free Voxengo OldskoolVerb The free Kjaerhus Classic reverb There is the linear one, Perfect space that is supposed to be good but gives problems with dropouts due to intensive CPU I understand. I really liked the Valhallaroom demo a lot due to its simple helper noted settings but it's $50 Yes I could buy X2, and a new computer to make it work and get a hobbled Breverb or buy the real one for $200. Is it just whatever turns you on in the end? It's very hard to compare apples due to the differences in control options. I worry I'm ignoring a quality plug due to lack of familiarization or spending wasted time on a problematic one.

Although I've been using Softube's TSAR-1R mostly the last year or so, I always felt that the Sonitus reverb gave me quality results and was quite happy with it.

I wouldn't even hesitate shelling out for ValhallaRoom if I were you. It has to be the best reverb for the money. I love everything about it. The quality is gorgeous, the interface is beautiful and the presets are everything you'll ever need. I like the sound of it better than Breverb.

That's what I like about the GUI. It's beautifully minimalist and makes a nice change from all of the skeuomorphic 3D monstrosities that try to simulate "real" controls. I don't know whether I'm just being swept along with a trend or whether my brain really does prefer the less-is-more approach to design, but my eyes were instantly attracted to the ValhallaRoom interface.

X2 Pro has breverb, which is very nice. The nicest algorithmic reverb yet included w/ Cake. And Softube's Tsar is sweet sounding too - the version that came w/ the Prochannel. With those two and Perfect Space (w/ lot's of free or otherwise impulses) pretty much cover the reverb bases. While I'm working I'll use studioverb for low cpu 'verb. It doesn't sound bad at all. Sometimes I keep it in the final mix since if it ain't broke, don't fix it. @

I like the Sonitus reverb and Breverb. Epic verb by Variety of sound is a good 32bit free reverb. I personally bought ValhallaVintageVerb and I use it most of the time. I also plan to get Valhallaroom and CSR by Ik Multimedia. Someone has it for sale for $40 on KVR.

Studioverb2, Sonitus Reverb and PerfectSpace are all useful. One could manage just fine if those were the only options available. Like so many others, my go-to reverb has been ValhallaRoom for quite a while. Occasionally I'll open an old pre-VRoom project and see how it sounds when I substitute VRoom for whatever reverb I'd used there previously. Sometimes it makes no significant improvement, but other times it's huge. It's most likely to make a big difference when the old reverb was the Sonitus, and least likely when replacing PerfectSpace.

Glenn, you can freeze the PS track - that is what I used to do when I'd get stutters. Just copy the reverbed track to a new track and then unfreeze and archive the old PS track. That takes PS offline. Another trick is to freeze only the reverb at 100% wet and mix that in live. @

Also add PerfectSpace only when done tracking and increase mixing latency. It is not unusual to record with latency set at one value and mix at another. Increasing latency may help the computer deal with the extra CPU load that PerfectSpace and other mixing plug-in add. If it helps to hear reverb when tracking use a lighter one like Sonitus or StudioVerb and swap it out during mixing.

Freeze a track with the snowflake right below the edit filter between the W and A buttons. You can also put the effects 100% wet on a track or bus, bounce it and mix in the bounced track just like any audio track.

Ah yes. I was confused about how to freeze the buss as I always use the reverb on a buss and use sends to it. So in this case, I bounce just the wet reverb buss and bring it back in as a track and fade it up to taste? I'll try the latency thing as well if PS acts up.

Glenn, don't forget to add $50 to the price of the Tsar1R if you dopn't already have an iLok. If we are sticking to the original question, I will echo that Sonitus, studioverb and perfect space will cover most of your needs. Every now and then i will watch one of Craig Anderton's videos or read one of his articles to remind me of how much can be done with the stock plugins.

PerfectSpace adds a fair amount of latency and CPU overhead. Follow scook's suggestion of using a lightweight reverb as a placeholder until you're done tracking, then replace it with PerfectSpace and increase your interface buffers in preparation for the final mix. I've never had any issues with PS, despite my DAW being old and relatively underpowered by current standards. Latency is somewhat adjustable in PerfectSpace. You can lower its internal buffer size to reduce latency, but more often you'll want to raise the buffer to ease the load on your CPU and reduce the likelihood of glitches during playback. CW suggests setting it to 1/4 the size of your interface buffers, but I leave PS at 1024 but mix with 2048 on my interface and don't have any problems. I'd guess as long as the PS buffers are smaller than the interface buffers you're OK. But the most important principle when it comes to PerfectSpace is that the quality of the reverb sound depends mostly on the impulse response file it's using. It's worth the effort to look around online for some alternate IR files, as there are many excellent ones available for free.
