Best strings (the one that the pro's use)?

Simple question: what the best strings addon right now? I just watched video's of LASS and it seems pro's use that one. Are there any others? Let's not talk about prices and just dream a little... I am curious which addon offers the best, most realistic strings. (LASS has A.R.T which seems awesome!) BTW I don't know if it HAS to be a VSTi or if there are other possibilities... Vienna looks great too, EWQL maybe, but as far as I can see LASS offers more easy to use functions to get result quicker...? And it's cheaper too.

I do own GPO but I am dreaming about getting some really professional strings... I'd use it more for classical music then for cinematic tunes, but I guess the real good ones can handle it all...?

A combination of all 3 plus more. Some are better suited for different material & user needs. I prefer VSL for more symphonic works.

Each has it unique sound and strengths. I have Hollywood Strings and Symphonic Orchestra from EWQL. While HS has the better pure sound I still find myself using SO on certain things. I would love to have LASS as well but not in the budget right now. If price was no issue you would simply buy all of them and use as needed. As far as which is the best LASS and HS seem to be the ones everyone talks about. Personally I haven't had the chance to try out VSL but would love to as the things I have heard out of it are great.

A guy who I know, gets lots of TV cuts uses Komplete as well, saying it is one of the best all around packages with decent sounds.

All the ones you listed are very popular in the active writers & composers circles.

Pros use all sorts of string libraries and many own multiple developers' libraries.

If you go to the various string sample developer sites, you can see testimonials for yourself. Of course, there a lot of pros who use products they don't officially endorse too. A lot of pros use KONTAKT based libraries. such as LASS (http://audiobro.com/reviews-2/testimonials/), Kirk Hunter Studios (http://www.kirkhunterstudios.com/testimonials.html) as well as EWQL, which has been a popular choice of pros for a long time.

I know of a lot of serious amateurs looking to break into the business use VSL and have said good things about it, as well as the other libraries I mentioned earlier, but I'm not aware of any pros using VSL (no doubt, there are probably a good deal of pros using it, I just know more about the others).

If you can hold off a week, I'm working with one of these developers on a huge Group Buy with the best deals I've ever seen on any high end string and brass libraries (I've been working with sample libraries using a DAW for over 10 yrs). I can post the info on this forum when it launches.

Okay, I can tell you who the dev is. It's Kirk Hunter Studios. The deals are going to be huge, better than any high end strings or brass library I've ever seen.

If you're looking for pro users of Kirk Hunter String libraries, I'll cut and paste the copy for a press release I'm putting together for the Group Buy.

ABOUT KIRK HUNTER STUDIOS SAMPLE LIBRARIES:
Kirk Hunter Studios strings and brass libraries are used by customers such as Kerry Livgren (Kansas), Jeff Bova (Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Kelly Clarkson, David Archileta, Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Joe Cocker, etc.), Bruce Miller (Josh Stone, Rod Stewart, Gladys Knight, shows such as Frasier, Designing Women, etc.), Jeff Beal (4 time Emmy winner; Medium, Ugly Betty, etc.), Alan Silvestri (The Mummy Returns, Lilo & Stitch, Polar Express, Night at the Museum, etc.). Our libraries are used on numerous popular TV shows, such as American Idol.  See the website for endorsements:

Are these the same KHSO samples that were re-packaged & released with a group buy about a year ago using the same KHSO samples used in Yellow Tools/ Independence orchestral Strings library?

    That information is incorrect, Carl.

I worked on that Group Buy you mentioned, and it was exclusively for the newly released Pop/Rock Strings KONTAKT library (including KONTAKT Player). I approached Kirk with the idea for that product. It was not a "re-packaging" of the Kirk Hunter Studios samples used in Independence. Pop / Rock Strings, but is basically a lighter version of Concert Strings II (the same sections, but less samples; I think Pop / Rock Strings is around 8GB, whereas Concert String II is around 25G), which is a very recently recorded/produced and very high end library with sophisticated KONTAKT scripting.

As I recall, the Kirk Hunter Studios library used for Yellow Tools Independence was based on an older KONTAKT library, not visa versa (to be clear, I am posting here as a user and not a representative for Kirk Hunter Studios; I'm a marketing professional that does consult to Kirk Hunter Studios; but I'm also a former working musician and avid user of sample libraries).  But like most third-party libraries for Independence, those libraries don't feature the sophisticated programming you'll find in the KONTAKT libraries.

Just my perspective, but for me, usability-wise, there's no comparison between using a sample library without sophisticated KONTAKT scripting and an old school sample library, which is primarily what the vast majority of the Independence libraries are (granted, I think they have a new version which allows for scripting, but a lot of the third-party libraries for Independence don't take advantage of scripting capabilities). Old school sample libraries were all about size and tons of different patches. Newer libraries are more extensive and playable due to sophisticated programming/scripting. I'd never go back to using libraries without these capabilities.

Interesting! I see Kirk Hunter also has automatic divisi stuff like LASS does. (Seems it even had that before LASS...?) I also read about Symphobia, but that's more about a complete orchestra... which isn't a bad thing, of course...

I already see that it almost impossible to decide what's best because they all have pros and cons... I do like the A.R.T. option in LASS and the divisi stuff, but Kirk has that too. And since Kirk's sells his divisi's seperately, you can get his cheaper than LASS, and that's already without the upcoming  group buy deal...

BTW Do all those libraries use Modulation for volume control? I noticed LASS does (just like good old GPO). I wonder if there are real differences between how you get things done.

P.S. Seems Kirk need a full version of Kontakt...? That's a shame.

+1 for Kirk Hunter. I only have the pop and rock package but it's excellent and a big step up from the KHSO strings in Independence.

@hellogoodbye Kirk Hunter Pop / Rock Strings comes with the KONTAKT Player, so you won't need a sample player. The other Kirk Hunter Studios libraries require the full version of KONTAKT, like most of the high end string sample libraries for KONTAKT. You can always buy Pop / Rock Strings and upgrade to the full version of KONTAKT or buy KONTAKT on eBay (I sold my copy of KONTAKT 4 via KVR for a small fraction of what I paid for it after I purchased KOMPLETE 5). I would strongly recommend buying KONTAKT for any DAW user who is a serious user of sample libraries. KONTAKT has been the standard in sampling for several years and its scripting capabilities take it far beyond simple sample players (be advised that other samplers that convert KONTAKT libraries DO NOT convert the scripting and that is a significant part of the reason KONTAKT is the leading sample format) and there's no sign that it will be displaced any time soon.

@carl I don't know the answer to that. I'm helping Kirk Hunter Studios plan and implement the Group Buy, so I'm certainly not a tech expert on Kirk Hunter Studios products. I know there are some new advances in KONTAKT 5, although, it really doesn't appear to me that KONTAKT 5 is a giant leap ahead from KONTAKT 4 (I personally haven't upgraded to KONTAKT 5, but will soon, when I pick up KOMPLETE 8, mainly for the new drum and percussion libraries). I'll ask Kirk to respond to your question.

Cool, thanks. Interesting. Does KH simply use volume for volume...? I see volume envelopes while for instance GPO and LASS use moulation for volume...! (I wonder if there is any difference and if so, what... Maybe because modulation can be applied realtime with a mod wheel and volume has to be added later or something...?  Never mind: I jusat saw the (very short) video which says you can use velocity and modwheel for volume. Or both.

Still, I really love the A.R.T. option in LASS...!!! Automated divisi was also great there, but KH has that too, which is great, of course. I do have to say that having (whatever kind of automated) divisi is really nice... I don't think other libraries have that.

Now I will see if KH works with keyswitches for other sounds and modes: afaik LASS doesn't do KS and you have to load the sound or type of play into another track... (?)

There's a new set out called "Albion" designed by two pros,Paul Thomson and Christian Henson of  Spitfire Audio who wanted something taylor made for movie work.

Made in the UK,top players from the English Session Orchestra were hired. These are some of the very best string players in the world.

Here is a fun comparison between LASS and KH pop/rock strings:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omor5fG1Qek

    http://www.kirkhunterstudios.com/products_pop_str.html

Of course the chosen reverb makes a difference, but LASS sounds a lot more er... clear and real to me... But maybe the pop/rock one isn't a good comparison? However, when you look at that Youtube LASS movie you can clearly see that guy has ALL articulations loaded in order to use them... that's a LOT of tracks: keyswitching seems a lot more convenient to me...!

Why does there never seem to be ONE package that has it all...?

You really should be comparing apples to apples. You are comparing LASS flagship $1,399 library against the economical $249 Pop/Rock Strings library. A more fair comparison would be Concert Strings II to LASS. However, listening to the Pop / Rock MP3 of Eleanor Rigby, the Kirk Hunter Pop/Rock Strings MP3 file itself sounds pretty low quality to me. I originally asked Kirk to make a demo of Eleanor Rigby and he sent me a WAV file, which sounds excellent. I'll ask Kirk about putting up a high quality WAV file. But I can't help but wonder if your referring to the LASS demo as more "clear and real" is related to both (1) the MP3 file quality and (2) the EQ, effects, mix/mastering of each demo (i.e., the YouTube audio has a very strong high end, whereas the Pop/Rock Strings audio demo does not). Now, of course, you may still find you prefer one library over the other (LASS vs Concert Strings II), after all, it is very subjective and beauty is in the ear of the beholder. But my experience is that a lot of sample buyers fall in love with the EQ, effects, performance, mix and/or mastering of a demo and are distracted from the actual samples themselves (this, of course, relates to sample buyers who are disappointed after they purchase a library, finding that it doesn't "sound just like the demo"). Consequently, there's nothing better than getting a product demo of a library before buying it (either from the dev or even trying them out at a local music store or a friend's house).

Hm, something went wrong... I posted a reply but it's gone...! I was saying I already (sort of) said I was comparing apples with oranges and that 'reverb' really meant 'reverb and so on'. And that I would LOVE to have demo but that that's impossible...

Anyway, I wanted to add to that that the upcoming group buy deal might change a lot on my perspective. ;) It seems to me that when I only need two 'parts' of Strings 2 in order to already be able to play with divisi (if I am not mistaken: I am not entirely sure what the differences between all the parts are...). Anyway, that would mean I could get a great basic string orchestra for around 350 dollars, and that might get a lot lower with the upcoming deal... Compate that to the full LASS version and well... who knows... I also need a new keyboard so every cent I can save helps!

@hellogoodbye You know, a few years back, I remember Kirk posting somewhere about having a time limited user demo. I'll ask him if he still does anything like that. IMO, nothing compares to having even part of the library so you can hear for yourself how the raw samples sound and the scripting works. Of course, in your case, you would need to pair that with the KONTAKT Player, which would mean that you could only try the strings out for 15 minutes (it used to be 30 minutes in past versions, but NI shortened the time) before it stops you from using them; you will need to restart the Player. But, if Kirk has a product demo, I still think, even with KONTAKT Player's 15 minute limitation on 3rd party libraries, you would still appreciate being able to hear the samples for yourself. I know you posted that you were using GPO (I also own GPO as well as several other developers string libraries) and I think you would be very impressed with the quality difference of even Pop / Rock Strings as compared to GPO. When I worked with Kirk on the last Group Buy around a year ago, a fair amount of people had owned GPO and were blown away by the quality difference of Pop / Rock Strings. You can check out the feedback from people who bought Pop / Rock Strings here: http://www.kvraudio.com/f...ad4521bc435502c025455c I should note that since then, Pop / Rock Strings, as well as other Kirk Hunter Studios libraries, have been significantly enhanced by the recently released TVEC 3. I have the KH Diamond Orchestra,Concert Strings,Pop Rock Strings and another one that hasn't got a mention here yet - the Sonic Implants Orchestral Strings along with a few other bits and pieces..

The KH Concert Strings are very "organic" and I like them alot....The Pop Rock strings are a quick and easy solution - a bit like Ezy Drummer compared to Superior ...

There's something very sweet and beautiful about the SI Orchestral Strings that always envokes a positive emotional response - an oldie but a goodie...

I find that the VSL sounds are a little too sterile for my tastes and they need quite a bit of tweaking to get them working right...The woodwinds and horns were always good but the strings have never been a favourite...

Like others have said - blending the libraries gives a more homogenous result and this is probably the best solution...A little more "analog" because they are not exactly in tune due to the layering...Much more like a real string section...

However,I believe that the most important consideration is that strings - or for that matter - all orchestral parts - need to be scored out for the most realistic results...The parts need to be written and played individually and then - and only then - will any sample library you choose really start to work...

What's the use in having the greatest piano sample in the world if you play it like a banjo ?  :)

BTW - a Pro could really use anything and make it sound good...That's why the're Pros ...

I used to watch a Pro golfer go out with a 5 iron and a putter and he was always at par or below...

That really pissed off the guys with the bags full of shiny and expensive sticks....

@digitalboy That's a great comparison between ezDrummer and Pop / Rock Strings (I'm a ToonTrack fan/customer, so it especially rings true for me). That is consistent with what Kirk and I had in mind with that product. Kirk went far beyond the specs I had originally suggested (I mainly wanted solo stings and a little more) . I think, for most musicians who write in the rock/hip hop/singer/ songrwiter/ R&B/funk/country and other contemporary pop genres that library is a great choice. There's nothing else like it for anywhere near the price on the market (a KONTAKT Player library with lots of layers, scripting, round robin, auto legato, etc.) at  it's list price of $249 USD. With this Group Buy, it is potentially going to go A LOT lower than that if it gets to the same number as the last Group Buy. But this time there are going to be more of Kirk Hunter Studios libraries included. I think I can share this. In addition to Pop / Rock Strings, Concert Strings II is almost certainly going to be included.

@helllogoodbye I was just fishing around at KirkHunterStudios.com and found the link to the demo version of Concert Strings II. Here's what I'd recommend. Go to Native Instruments site and download KONTAKT Player, or better yet, download KOMPLETE Players -- both are free and KOMPLETE Players gives you a bunch of NI stuff, players, libraries, a cut down version of their guitar amp sim, etc. for free. As I mentioned earlier, free or trial third party KONTAKT libraries will only run for 15 minutes in the Player, but I think having the actual samples on your machine is far superior then listening to demos.

Everyone one else who sees this, of course, should feel free to download this stuff and especially the 1st Violins from Concert Strings 2 demo.

    KOMPLETE PLAYERS (FREE):

FREE DEMO OF 1ST VIOLINS FROM CONCERT STRINGS 2:
"The free version has truncated samples without loops or with very irregular loop points. (We did not want to give away the perfect samples, after all.) All of the sustain samples in the full version are nicely looped, even the solo samples.
    - The free version contains only the 1st violins with a range of only C5-G5"

Another option, if price is a consideration, might be LASS lite. Still about $500 but you get all the benefits of the full LASS (including A.R.T and auto-arranger) minus the divisi. I usually have to throw in a little Symphobia (mixed low) to give it a little more of that Hollywood sound, but I still think it's the best thing out there. Having said that, there are times that I'll use the high violins in VSL Special Edition over LASS, or the cellos from GPO. They all have their own sounds and I need a little bit of all of them from time to time!

Thanks for all replies, advice, ideas, etc. etc.! Much appreciated!

Good news about Strings II being in the deal! And I will certainly give that demo a try, Peter! Cool! Unfortunately I probably won't be able to do that before the weekend, but who knows, maybe I can find some time in between to give it a go: I am very curious!
Anout LASS Lite: I am afraid I will mis the divisi's... Although I could of course get Lite and later the fullversion if I want to with their dollar for dollar upgrade path. Then again, if KH becomes REAL cheap... that's very tempting too! (EDIT Although having to buy the fullversion of Kontakt, good as it may be, doesn't help, of course...)

Obviously having various libraries is the best, but then money REALLY becomes a problem. I am already very fortunate (so ot feels) that I can even think about buying some strngs that could cost (more than a) few hundred dollars, but 'a few thousand dollars' is out of the question, haha!

Sonar 8.5 PE, Edirol FA-66, Behringer C-1. All instruments in my songs are VSTi's.

I see the 'Black Friday' group buy is in effect.
Hope you post the info here & explain it again. The discount applies to every title correct?

Hi Carl, The Group Buy didn't launch just yet. But some folks over at KVR found some pages on kirkhunterstudios.com proclaiming a Group Buy with up to 75% discounts -- I'm not confirming nor denying this rumor! ;) I'll definitely post here right away, as I am a regular visitor to this site, KVR, VI-Control and V-Drums.com (I've been using Sonar since the first version and the early versions of Twelve Tone Software, I forgot the old name of the original name of the flagship product -- was it Cakewalk Pro Audio? -- before they called it Sonar!).

Not every Kirk Hunter Studios product is in the Group Buy (although, I bet if you lobby Kirk in the GB thread at KVR and can get others to back your cause, he'll consider it), but it looks very likely to be Pop / Rock Strings, Concert Strings II, Concert Brass II and Diamond and that will include the TVEC 3 update -- which has been getting some great user reviews over at KVR. The Group Buy is likely to launch today. I'll post here immediately following the KVR thread and form up on kirkhunterstudios.com. In a nutshell, Kirk is testing brining pro level libraries to a wider market.

Again, I'm not confirming or denying the 75% discount deal someone claimed on KVR, but consider how such a discount would make KHS pro libraries like Concert Strings II, which have been used in all sorts of TV, movies and pop productions, accessible to working musicians, home hobbyists, etc. Basically the same folks who may have otherwise been using GPO (which was one of my early string libraries). Concert Strings II, Concert Brass II or Diamond or even Pop / Rock Strings are an enormous step up. Consider the libraries comparable to Concert Strings and they don't sell for under $700 even when heavily discounted (LASS lists at $1299 USD and the lowest sale price I've seen is $999 USD); if the 75% rumor were true, that would mean Concert Strings II could go as low as around $200 USD. I can say that this Group Buy is about to change the price to value relationship in orchestral libraries -- potentially in a big way -- I'm most excited about that aspect. Making high end libraries that historically are aimed at the pro audience and the serious amateurs (with lots of money; far beyond my own humble budget) accessible to the average working musician on a tight budget and home hobbyists is, imo, a pretty good thing.

     - Peter
