Best things I have added to enhance Sonar

Console 1 - it is so nice to be able to use both visual and auditory cues in cutting/boosting eqs.  And the plethora of knobs!!!  And the inclusion of compatibility with many of the UAD plugs.  This is so much more refined than automap or Act or any other thingy that helps control Sonar.

X-Touch.  I have a keystation 88 and numerous Novation thingies.  But the X-Touch seems like a very elegant way to deal with so many parameters!

What have you guys and gals found that really enhances workflow?

Thanks

My Mackie Control Universal and my collection of Waves plugins. These two in themselves have contributed a lot to Sonar. Not that Sonar doesn't have great plugins, but I sort of like the Waves plugins a little bit better,  just a little bit... just a teeny-weeny, weeny, weeny, bit better.

Hey Bakers, if you give me a free Cakewalk T Shirt and a Cakewalk Mug, I'll never use another Waves Plugin again,... Well, at least for a month.

Console 1 huh? I have been thinking about that. Perhaps for the benefit of others (and myself) could you give a couple of details on how Console 1 fits into your workflow and how it has benefited you? I have been on the fence about it and would like to hear from a SONAR user that I trust on how it fits in for you.

Yes, absolutely!!!
I love the UAD plugins and the unison technology with the Apollo Interface is top notch!!!
I also love "The Glue" Compressor plugin, definitely a "must have" for me.
The MCU also adds a nice touch to my setup as well.

Hey, Charles  Hope you're good
When doing a (quick) mix, I do can now do it in minutes instead of hours.
It's very intuitive to use. It only took me minutes to get a hold of how things worked.
When inserting a C1 plugin on each track, makes it a breeze to browse through tracks, duplicating presets on several tracks and grouping tracks. Those are just benefits from the top of my head.
I almost forgot about the drive knob. I like that a lot for adding a little (to a lot of) harmonics (to each track).
If you set it to 5, it is as going through a SSL 4000. 0 is clean, and 10 is distortion
It also supports side-chain on plugins that ha that feature.
When they added the UAD feature, I started using them again for the 1st time in many months
Now it's 2nd nature to tweak eq and comps. The added graphics (not all UAD plugins support this (yet)) are just a plus. I use it over my whole screen when opening it. Makes me kinda forget about the pc  I love the "mixer" feeling it gives me.
I'm also using less plugins after I got it, with at least as good a result. (Guess it makes me go less is more ).
I'll probably have more, if interested
Talk to you later, bro!
Edit: I use it in tandem with my FW 1884, just to have that said.

Yes, Echoboy Jr. is perfect for those times when you prefer less tweaking, but still retain the quality in sound of EchoBoy Sr.. I think this is Echoboy Jrs. bibiggest selling point, plus Jr. has a few features not available in Sr. , but still less tweaking required.

This the thread was started with Control Surfaces... For me it was (obviously) what is linked in my signature
ACT is in fact much more powerful then Console 1, X-Touch or any other particular device+driver combination. It does not work "out of the box", but the relation (and features) is the same as between presets for some FX/Synth and FX/Synth itself: it takes time to learn how to tune it but opens more ways to use it.

I've been on the verge of downloading your Console 1 preset more than once, Alexey
I'm just somewhat "allergic" to setting up things I'm not sure about how to do.
I was barely able to make my AKAI MPK 25 use play / recording buttons, using your AZCtrl starter preset
I'm barely able to type on a pc...
I seems to daunting to me, so I play joyfully with the (limited) features I have

Adding a 2nd screen made a big difference to my workflow. Adding a 3rd was a further improvement. Adding a 4th and arranging them 2 above & 2 below was even better. The main Sonar window with Track View is stretched across the upper pair. The lower pair is used for other views, e.g. CV, PRV, etc., depending on Screenset.

Good point Kev.  I replaced two side by side with a single that equals 2 x 2.  That prolly has a slight edge over the FaderPort

I would prefer that too. If I could afford it, I would replace my current setup with 2 Dell ultra-wide screens, one above the other.

i dont think of act and console 1 as being competitors.  Console 1 is limited to a recording channel - shaper, eq, compression... but it integrates those into a very logical and easily usable format.  I personally find it much easier to tweak the eqs over a bunch of channels by switching channels in console 1 and doing my cuts/boosts as I listen to a mix evolve.  Having the UAD plugs plus the SSLs is so nice too.  Since they integrate seamlessly, putting a harrison or a Helios before a DBX or a 1176 is sweet too.  Custom recording channels.

Alex between cake and softube, the integration could not be easier!

It would be nice if the pan and mutes and volumes in Console 1 were affecting those parameters in tracks they were working on in SOnar.

EDIT
This all works like a jose with the VST3 plugin.  Never mind above comments

Alex Westner [Cakewalk]
FWIW, we're working on a short video about SONAR / Console 1 mkII integration...

Taking delivery of Console 1 mkII on Monday. Looking forward to the video. Thanks Alex.

To add my 2 cents. The X Touch has been very helpful in my workflow. I'm looking forward adding the Console 1 to further enhance a more mix with my ears/ not with my eyes approach. Of course in contradiction to that, adding a second screen was a big plus!

Looking forward to that video! Well, thanks guys. Now I have to budget for a Console 1...ha ha ha.

Let me ask this to be clear: Are you saying that the Console 1 also allows you to use UAD plugins without needing to buy their (UAD) hardware?
