Best way to record a keyboard?

I have a presonus Firebox, and a midi keyboard. The way I have been recording it is with the line out on the keyboard, i think it was for headphones but it works for me. I want to use the midi out on it instead but can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Is it possible with the equipment I'm using? I'm also using Sonar but figured that was a given since I'm in the sonar board:) Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

i cant really work out if you want to record midi or audio from that question.

line out is audio ... makes sound.

midi out is midi ... instructions between bits of kit (like a network).

what are you trying to do exactly?

well .. have you enabled the PreSonus firebox MIDI lines in Sonar? (i.e."Options->MIDI Devices...")

You'll probably want to record both the audio and the midi as two separate tracks.

Make a MIDI and make an Audio track .. set the input of your MIDI track to the
Presonus .. and the input of Audio track to the Presonus as well... arm both of them
for record .. and wail away!

You should see both the audio and midi. You may want to make sure you don't have
the Echo enable on on the midi track .. otherwise you'll hear double notes.

I always mic mine, but I guess that depends on the type of keyboard. I have one of those old ibm ps/2 keyboards with that great 'click' feel. I put a SM57 on it and voila! However, if you're using a newer Logitech, you might try a KSM32 or an NT-2 maybe.

Oh... the musical kind of keyboard. I see.

You need to do a little homework on the differences between MIDI and AUDIO, my young padawan..

It depends on what your midi board accomodates. On my Yamaha P120, I use both. For the onboard audio, I use a stereo audio output (that tip/ring/sleeve thing) into a line in on my preamp box. For midi (local control off), I use MIDI THRU, which connects to the PC joystick port. Don't know if that's the best way, but it works. I don't know Presonus, but you can use your MIDI OUT if you have an IN on the other end of the chain. M-Audio has connector boxes called Midisports. I think you can get a single line for under $40.

we've probably confused the chap already ...

    funny reply david !

are you trying to record sounds or messages from the keyboard. audio will not travel through the midi connections, think of midi as one of those piano's that plays itself ... forgot what they are called ...

give us a bit more info and we can point you in the right direction ...

We need a "sticky" around here that says: MIDI does not transmit audio!

If you're recording a live performance, record audio. If you are recording in the studio, unless you can play perfectly on every take, record MIDI. That way you can go back and edit the performance. Once you have it perfected, then you can record the playback as an audio track.
