Best way to set up multiple tracks of Kontakt or Sampletank
When using a plugin like Kontrakt or Sampletank in Sonar, what is the best way to record multiple tracks/patches? I know I can open up many instances of the plugin. However, I "assumed" I'd use less cpu/memory if I simply opened one instance. Then, I'd create multiple tracks pointing to it, with each track having it's own midi channel. This works, but when I go to bounce the midi to audio, I get a message saying that the midi track has no audio associated with it. So, how do I get the audio plugin "association" with my newly created midi tracks OR should I just simply open a new instance of the synth plugin with each midi track that I create?

When you bounce the track, you must select both the midi track and the track that the VST is on. Regards, Dan

I do have one more question. There are 3 different dll files for kontakt. I think the difference is the number of outs provided in each dll? I send everything to a stereo master buss. So, I'm only using 2 (L/R) outs, correct? Why would you ever use 16 outs, for instance?

Well, I routinely load a single instance of Kontakt with 5 or 6 different instruments, such as Piano/Strings/Organ/Rhodes/Bass/etc... and then I use a Batch Option from the Output Section of Kontakt to wipe out the existing Audio Output Channels and then it will create a separate stereo audio output channel for each loaded instrument in the instance, and then I can control audio at the Sonar level for the audio outputs from each Kontakt instance I may have setup. So, THAT is why you might want either 8 or 16 outputs for a single Kontakt instance. I limit the number of loaded instruments to 5-6, because Kontakt (at least at one time) used to get its list of available outputs to pick from when assigning audio track Inputs in Sonar all jazzed up, and that starts to happen after around 6 instruments in a single Kontakt instance or so. You can look at the actual names of the Kontakt dll files (I believe) to see the number of outputs, or you can look at the plugin properties for each of the 3 Kontakt dll files and under Details you can see how many outputs each one has. (I renamed all 3 from within Sonar to better show me which one had each number of outputs - I believe one is 8 outs, another is 16, and the other is default - which may have 32 or might even support 64, can't recall at the moment because I never go past 16). Thanks. Why not just always load the dll with the highest number of outputs, so they're available? I assume the answer is that it requires more resources/cpu ??

I forget the setting name, but you can tell Sonar to use the full DLL name in the list of plugins. Makes it easy to find the right Kontakt vst.

Also you can create your own instrument layout and name them what you want, leave out ones you don't want, etc. But then when you add something new, you need to remember to add it to your custom layout.

Hope you guys can help me out, I recently purchased Kontakt 5 and am having difficult time setting up multiple instruments in Sonarx3 Producer. I can get one instrument to work but if I add another it comes across on both channels or not at all. I've watched Seth's video on Youtube and others but they never seem to paint the whole picture. I'm a novice user. Would it be better to use Kontakt as a stand a-lone or as a plugin.

Bob, The fix for this is to create an output template in Kontakt (the 16 out version is the only one I ever use ... I disabled the others in plugin manager) My template is st1 through st16 Then set it as the default output template that Kontakt always uses and all problems with Sonar and Kontakt outputs go away. I always use the 16 out version of Kontakt, even if I'm just starting with one instrument because adding more instruments is made easy by the output template. Do this: And you get this: See the larger view: http://www.sightsea.com/r.../Kontakt_st1-st161.jpg
