Best way to stretch audio in X1
Ok, so I have two vocal clips. 1 at 125, one at 111, and my song is at 135 BPM. I'm triggering the samples through battery, although I also have Kontact 3 if that helps. The 111 sample doesn't line up very well though (I was able to manually break up the 125 one in battery to get it to align time wise). I tried groove clip looping, but I can't ever seem to get it to work right. I would assume I could just tell it the orginal BMP, and away we go. But maybe the operator error light is just flashing. Thanks,

Krone sometimes you have to bounce to clip to get some of the stuff to work - like Groove Clips. Might be that easy - others will know more.

I thought a groove clip matched the tempo? Sorry I don't know exactly what you're trying to do. I just imported an audio Groove Clip into a new project. Original beat 110 BPM. I up the beat to 145 the clip follows. Can you save the vocal clips as Groove clips at their original beat then import them? Like I said others will know more.

You can manually stretch a clip by holding down Cntrl and then grabbing the edge of the clip where you would when you perform a slip edit. This time, though, instead of turning a blue color, it turns yellow and you can then stretch it out. In the lower right corner of the clip you'll see a percentage which tells you how much you've stretched the clip.

Vocal samples might not be getting detected properly for good stretching. I'd use Kontakt, their various stretching methods usually achieve great results and you have more slicey dicey options.

Also check in the Inspector>Clip Properties>Groove Clip> there's a 'stretch to tempo' check box. Gotta be a Groove Clip first.

Yes the vocals don't have groove info, so it doesn't automatically do it. Thanks for the tips on using cntrl. If that doesn't work, I will look at Kontact.

If those tempos are right on, you might try keeping it simple, and just applying the appropriate stretch (actually compression) ratios to each clip, using Process > Length. 125/135 = 92.59% and 111/135 = 82.22%. You can choose the Radius Vocal algorithm in the dialog.

I'm gonna post this anyway to see if I can learn something..... ...or even 135/125 = 108% and 135/111 = 102.16% - that's assuming the Audio would be stretched in a positive direction (expanded to fit) but I'll stand corrected if need be. Man I don't know why I post this stuff - I really have no idea but it seems you'd want a clip that's 125 BPM to be lengthened to 135? Fascinating. I can see you're right Bundle - as usual - thanks for that tip.

Well, that's not working out for me, so I'm trying to chop it up instead (The shorter one is just two short, different phrasing). Right now, I'm manually going through and splitting the audio and applying fades, but that seems like it has to be the slow way to do it. I tried using phatmatix pro, which chops it fine into 32's, but it clips. So I need fades (which either it doesn't do, or I don't know how). Any other suggestions?

I think we need a better idea what kind of material you're working with, and what exactly you're trying to match it to. I don't understand what is meant by "the shorter one is just two [sic] short, different phrasing". It kind of sounds like there are more differences between these tracks than just tempo. At this point its hard to make any meaningful suggestions without understanding the starting point and the goal better.

If you use Kontakt, you can use different stretching algorithims (the Tone option I'm thinking of in particular) that may be WAY better than trying to slice and dice it.

Yes, I have decided that I won't be able to match the two samples. The phrasing is two different in one. I can stretch it, but it just won't do what I want (basically one of the sylabals is way longer than the other, and I didn't realize that at first. So, I've given up on that. Instead... I want to chop the first audio sample up into teeny tiny slices, and do do the stuttering but spread out effect. For example, you could do 32nd slices, and put a 32 space between each one. But, I would like to make it a bit fancier. I know one way to get those slices is just to split the audio in each spot and then apply cross fades to prevent audio pops. Another way could be to use phatmatix pro, but I'm getting audio pops with that and I don't know how to get rid of them. Are there any better ways to do this? Thanks,

I understand the sample may not work for you but it seems like solutions so far seem overly complicated. First, if the clip doesn't match the tempo you can turn it into a groove clip and specify how many beats are in the clip. The clip should then align to measures. If you want to adjust timing within the clip you could enable AudioSnap on the clip and drag the transients.

First, if the clip doesn't match the tempo you can turn it into a groove clip and specify how many beats are in the clip. This almost never works with one shots I've noticed because they don't include a set number of beats. So even though, I know that it's at 125 etc, I get values like either 90 BMP, or 170 etc (just pulling numbers out of the air right now not at my computer). I wonder if the following would help... Change Sonar to 125. Extend the clip to a whole measure. Then bounce to clip. Again though, that won't help now because I've decided the two samples just won't match, instead I want to chop them up for a stutter effect. Thanks,

You really don't need to know how many beats are in the clip you are trying to turn into a groove clip. You just need to know how many beats in Sonar you want the groove clip to stretch to. For instance, if there is a clip that needs to align to two measures in 4/4 meter specify 8 beats.

Oh, I did not know that. Thought I tried a couple of different beats settings, and I never really go what I wanted. It works great with drum loops etc, but I've never had much luck with one shots.

If you have a clip that hasn't been set up for looping you may need to trim the start and end points. The easiest way to check is select the clip, set loop points to selection and listen to the clip loop. If the loop doesn't sound right adjust the loop points until it does, slip edit start and end points to match the loop and bounce to a new clip. Some clips may just not sound right depending on the project. For instance, perhaps a clip was recorded in 3/4 time and the project is 4/4. Or the clip has a swing beat feel and the project material doesn't. Or the clip was recorded at a dramatically faster tempo then the project etc.

Yes in this particular case I wasn't interesting in looping, more in getting the sylablas to be in time with the music. I was able to just put a couple of slices in and trigger it from Battery. That won't work for the stutter effect though.

Have you tried cakewalk's time/pitch stretch 2? If not, right click the clip and choose: Process effect -> Audio Effects -> Cakewalk -> Time/Pitch Stretch 2 You can't select tempo or anything with this one, but you can test different settings until you get there.. Also go to the advanced page and select MPEX, quality: Best - Single instrument or voice to get the best quality for a vocal clip.

So many ways to accomplish what you want.. If Im doing a remix, I would like to have the original track , What I would do is load that up in sonar and adjust my tempo to fit the down beats on 1,Giving me the tracks tempo .. Then I would load up the accapella , and line that up with the original tracks vocal .. So now I would have a starting point , Now I know the tempo . accapella sits on beat with tempo , Then you can go to work....<--- Thats the easiest way if you have those circumstances . Another approach would be to cut and split the vocal into 4 or 8 bars each on its own track, Then your able to stretch pull do what ever.. This is my most common way I work with vocals cut them up.. You can also load them all individually into kontack , I tend to load only the parts, The ones I wanna loop out, or automate a time stretch ect..its endless ...
