Good lyric and it's fresh, sorta Dylan'ish. Mix not to everyone's taste but it's a nice song, like all your stuff it has your sound ....

I guess a mix can't please everyone...but anything you feel stands out as needing attention?

Nop I like your stuff because of how it sounds, I'm tired of really polished tracks that have lost the feel your stuff has! ...IMO your sound is true ( you've been at it some time if your join date is right ) so keep it, let the song be the point, not how cleverly it's been mixed.
When I went to pubs years ago and listened to a band with the misses we always felt that the live sound was infinitely better, in this case none of us can do live stuff here (well we could but it doesn't suit the forum) so ... sorry I just like your songs ... and I wouldn't change them. BUT
If you wanna make a sound that suits your style I would make the vocal work you do less staccato ...less short and detached. You can sing your songs and you don't need to depend on this form of vocal style to enhance your range, perhaps a smidge more reverb ... but that's it!
    Well you did ask
    Regards
    Steve

Yeah now worries, thanks. Of all the stuff, vocals are the weakest...I think I can improve though. As for the general sound, since they are songs I wrote, I'm not going for anyone else's sound, don't want to emulate any kind of mix and don't care about polished. The main thing is translation of the mix and simply a well balanced mix.

And yeah, my join date is pretty ancient here...2004...back then I was getting started with recording, but the last 12 years or so, due to work, I haven't been able to do anything. It's just in the last 10 months or so I've been able to get back into it.

    Thanks for your comments

Exactly. Monte, if you could hold notes longer, it would greatly enhance your vocals. The mix was fine.

Those guitars sound great -- the mix is very good -- vox are well placed within the mix and the sound is clear.  btw, I hear a bit of a Davey Jones sound in your vocal!  Very good demo of your catchy song...

    Meet The Barnacles
(not the Fab Four but the Terrible Three)

Captain Able was once again manning the bridge on the mightly Songship as it plowed through the putrid soundwaves on the roiling -- but never rocking -- Sea of Sterile Pastiche.  Suddenly, Able heard an all too familiar sound coming from the hull of the ship -- an irritating droning croaking whiny sound that cheapened the senses.  Able quickly covered his ears while shouting to his navigator "It's those damned Barnacles -- they're trying to sully and sink the Songship.  Full speed ahead!"

Down below, The Barnacles -- Blahpoop, Steryl69, and Synkophant -- were desperately attempting to cling to the Songship in order to sink the towering song vessel.  And, as usual, they were accompanied by their faithful floating beta consorts, The Attaboys, led by Dymm with assistance from EphYOU.

As The Barnacles attached their tentacles to the hull of the Songship, they unleashed  a torrent of (f)artless lyrics which were delivered in a tuneless -- although auto-tuned -- fashion.  These dirges, sung without style, were accompanied by tinker toy faux reggae sounds which were grounded by thumps.  The Attaboys circled and cooed encouragement in the murky waters surrounding the Songship.

Able called out for the crew to ready for battle.  Soon, the air on deck sparkled as the Songship's crew played melodic song after song in various styles and arrangements.  Tuneful vocals singing well-versed lyrics rang out with resonance and interesting phrasing.  There was no need for auto-tune and the like.  Confronted again with the Songship's lack of banality, The Barnacles were driven into a furor.  Their only was to increase the volume of their monkey-like screeching.  In the midst of this cacophony The Attaboys -- having been given strict orders through underwater sonar messaging -- fell silent.

Nearly overcome by the mediocrity assaulting his ears, Captain Able deftly guided the Songship away from the area where The Attaboys were floating.  He then ordered the crew to increase the melodic sounds emanating from the deck.  Overcome by contact with actual talent, The Barnacles could not sustain their attack and fell from the hull into the swirling soundwave abyss. The Attaboys, floating leaderless, continued to comment amongst themselves about The Barnacles' greatness, but to no avail.  The Barnacles lay quiet at the bottom of the Sea of Sterile Pastiche, brought down once again by their own banality.

The Songship continued gliding into fresher waters guided by the most able Captain Able as new sounds were carried by fresh breezes across the newly christened Sea of Good Songs.

I immediately thought more vox on the "Better Me Better You" hook - maybe do a few more vocal takes to make it fuller - a double and more harmony bgvs.

Mix sounds OK here, though the vocal is a bit staccato in delivery and can I hear the metronome bleed through occasionally?  Thanks for sharing.

I actually like the staccato quality of the vocals - it gives the song character.

    Good song all round.

Thanks all. Doing what I can with vocals...no metronome...I don't use one at any stage of recording or mixing. Haha Edit: I realised what you can hear Wookie....it's a woodblock I recorded in verse 2 and the outro.

Ditto - I hear Davey in there too.

If The Monkees had more of a country/folk vibe it might have sounded like this.   Good mix, good tune.   I really liked the little bits and pieces you layered throughout.

This is fun to listen to - I do like the feel of Dylan in your voice. I think the mix is very clear - I like the separation. I do think the overall mix could use a bit of global reverb. Overall I like this tune a lot - well don

I too liked the organicness of your voice, a la dylan.  Also, the guitar solo was simple and melodic, supporting the gist of the song (rather than showing off.)

Yep, the solo I just thought....make it like the tune of the vocal. When it's too hard to fit something else in that's a great fallback.

    Thanks for listening

Nice rawness/ realistic feel to this tune.  I felt the verse vocal could come up just a touch.

Thanks Michael. I really feel like this one turned out the best of all I've done. Interestingly, I went back to see just exactly what I did to the mix, and wouldn't you know it...stock plugins...and very basic stuff. There's no fancy mixing...and only sparse use of plugins. Hmmm...there might be a lesson in that for future stuff.

I have another song called 'Losing Ground' and I threw the kitchen sink at it in terms of plugins...and it sucks.
