Better alternative to myspace?

Hi all, I wasn't sure where to put this.

I want to upload some of my songs, but I put them on myspace and they sounded so horrible I have them as high quality FLAC which is close to their original form and it sounds quite good like that. But I convert them to 320kbps MP3 (which doesn't sound TOO bad) but when I upload them to Myspace, it must convert them some more because the result is horrible.

I must obviously need to learn how to do mastering better than I can currently, but I wondered if a temporary solution could be to find somewhere I can upload songs in their FLAC form, or even just 320kbps MP3? I really want it so that people can't download it, so that is why I liked myspace. So somewhere that can achieve that but at a higher quality would be great.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

I think Myspace converts them down to 96kbps.

Soundclick uses 128 stereo whereas many other sites are in mono. If you purchase an account with them (something like $10 a month I think) then you can upload to 320. There are also websites around that allow you to upload it so it plays back in quicktime. You could upload at any rate though people can easily download them. If you're not satisfied with the 128 stereo then you're probably going to have to pay to get your songs up there so they can't be downloaded. Also, remember people can simply hit record and record all the output so your songs are never truly download safe. Using lower quality mp3s means for people to get the good quality versions though, they gotta pay you for it. So there are benefits of using a lower sample rate.

Only 96? Sounds worse than that to me sometimes.. Probably just use a really terrible encoder along with that then I guess?

    Thanks everyone.

It's strange because there is a lot of stuff on MySpace that sounds really ok. Mine sounded horrible, so I think I have a LONG way to go to learn about mastering. I think I will try SoundClick anyway. 120kbps isn't great but it's better than nothing and at least I can convert my FLAC's straight to that myself, and then I can at least hear how it will sound before I upload it. So no more nasty surprises :)

I looked at that big thread that altima_boy_2001 linked for me, if anyone knows of any *free* site on that link (or anywhere else) that allows higher than 120kbps, then please let me know and I can switch to that instead :) I am not too concerned about networking or anything, this is just so I can give the link to potential band mates and friends and family etc.

Soundclick goes better than 120kbps, it goes to 128kbps!! Just kiddin'

Anyway, do a google search on 'free mp3 hosting' and they have websites which you can just upload any file, though it will be downloadable.. Just an option if you really need greater than 128 but I find that if you use a good encoder then 128 is generally listenable for internet purposes. If they are listening to it from the net then they may not be hooked up to a decent sound system anyway which makes it even more negligible. Give soundclick a go, or listen to some stuff from the songs forum. It's not too bad.

Thank you :) I just had a go with Reverbnation. It sounds ok. I'm not sure what they use but it sounded much better than MySpace. I had a song over 8MB though so the end is missing. I'll have to do something about that.

SoundClick is what most of us use.

Make sure you use a good quality MP3 dithering, as SC may re-dither you're already dithered work.

    Altima, thanks for that lead.
