Beware of Windows Updates: Solved
I have been thankful that I have not had the problems that a lot of people have had with Sonar. Recently I started having problems with my hardware and it was after windows did an automatic update in the background with 18 security fixes. Here is the problems. first my PC2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier vanished and was no longer in the pro channel. I use two audio interfaces. first I have a Sonar V-Studio 100 and next I have a Line 6 Pod X3 pro (Rack mount unit) When I go into preferences and look at the hardware I uncheck the V-100 in the hardware driver section and the Pod X3 remains greyed out. I tried switching to WMD and everything appears, but then I noticed that the wave profile button no longer works and I cannot run a wave profile. I can run a wave profile under MME but not under WMD. Here is what I did to try and resolve this. First I did a system restore point and rolled back before the updates. Next I reset the VSTs and did a new vst scan (that brought back the PC2a T) One problem solved The Pod x3 remains greyed out. I need to keep it plugged in in order for Pod Farm to work. I unplugged the VS 100 and rebooted Sonar and the Pod X3 came back and I can use it. but now everytime I plug the VS 100 in it switches to that device and the Pod 3 remains greyed out under ASIO. even when everything is unchecked. I still cannot run a wave profile under WMD. So here is my question and something to consider. I know cakewalk tested Sonar X2 before it was released and they did this on many systems. Does anyone think that the windows updates are contributing to the bugs in cakewalk? These problems are obviously bugs. Has anyone here got the same issues? Where do I go to report bugs? I have not had to do that yet. Thanks in Advance for any advice and help!

Thanks for the heads up. That set of of updates totally hijacked my laptop the other night and took almost an hour to complete. I have noticed anything buggy going on on the laptop but I usually wait a while to see if anyone reports Win update issues on their DAWs before updating mine. Looks like I'll wait out this round. Friggen M$, man. Cheers.

I have not had any serious issues until the updates were installed and the computer wanted to reboot. I had no idea that windows was updating itself. I turned automatic updates off. I don't know how it got turned back on again...ahhh the mysteries of buggy software. Now I am waiting for the next update and I hope it is soon. stupid windows updates It hijacked my computer as well.

I know some folks don't have a choice in the matter but this is one of the many reasons I leave my DAW disconnected from the internet until I absolutely need to download something. I let my laptop be the guinea pig. However that last round of updates was ridiculous. I was just getting ready to chill out for the night and decided to update Avast because it had been nagging at me for a couple days about a new version. When I rebooted Windows took over so I was stuck waiting for it to do it's thing. I freaking hate that.

Oh and maybe go scope out the Windows forums to see if maybe there is some chatter on any ways to remove the problematic elements. Not sure if CNET would discuss that type of stuff but they might be worth a peak too. Maybe even put in a support ticket with Cakewalk to see if they can find a tweak for you. My lappy however seems to be working fine at the moment but obviously Sonar can be far more temperamental about these types of things. Cheers.

I have my windows update set to not update. I then choose when to do so without being totally under the thumb of the OS. LOL I can't imagine what havoc could be wrought by an update happening while I am doing critical stuff on the computer. Oh the humanity! In the case reported by the OP my method would most likely not stop the update from screwing up the computer.

Interesting. I pretty much soak up all the Windows updates when they arrive. My reliability monitor in W7 has flat-lined at the max for as many weeks as it goes back (5 months worth IIRC). Windows updates normally culminate in a Service Pack eventually and nobody would dispute that over that period of time stability of an OS gets improved. There was one minor issue with one particular update in the last 5 months from what I can recall which was subsequently fixed. The one thing that keeps me safe from this kind of thing and any kind of malware you care to name is having a strong policy of backing up the OS. System restore doesn't cut it. You need an imaging application that can backup or restore your entire OS in a matter of a few minutes per week. If you'd found a particular issue with a specific update that would be useful but this kind of unfounded speculation over something that vaguely might or might not be an issue just undermines peoples confidence in whether their systems are working correctly or not. Adopt a strong policy and remove any doubt. That can include incremental backups as in my case or only ever adopting full service packs. The responsibility is down to the administrator of your machine. Which is usually yourself. btw I've not found any bogey men in the wood-pile on the latest round of updates. I always decline 'Skylight' and 'Bing Desktop'. It figures if your machine worked perfectly when you took delivery of it and haven't updated a thing since it should still work perfectly, sometimes though you'll upgrade software or hardware and having the latest stability fixes to Windows may be just what's required if issues become apparent after such an upgrade. Being able to get back to any point before such a major change however is great security, especially when it can be done in a matter of a few minutes.

@sharke... Yup. I'm not sure if there is a way to make Windows NOT install the updates once they've weaseled their way onto the Shutdown/Restart button but if there is I'd sure like to know how. It's usually not a problem for me because I have my laptop set to do it's updates in the middle of the night while I'm sleeping but for performance/security reasons I usually clear my cache and reboot every day or so and sometimes I get stuck with going through the update process like I did the other night.

sharke Windows doesn't do automatic updates in the background, it does them all when you shut down/reboot, surely? Maybe it downloads them in the background and installs them on shutdown? Windows will install while other programs are in use. The reboot usually reconfigures the software. Some updates are installed on reboot and others are install after they are downloaded. at least that is the way it works on my computer when I am running a bunch of updates. It will specify between downloading and installing. Jonbouy Interesting. nobody would dispute that over that period of time stability of an OS gets improved. Being able to get back to any point before such a major change however is great security, especially when it can be done in a matter of a few minutes. I was using Sonar with no problems. Then a banner came up Instructing me to reboot the computer to finish the install. I saved my project shut down Sonar and rebooted the computer. The problems I am having started after I rebooted the machine. These problems did not exist before I rebooted. While it may be a bug within Sonar and that is where the fix needs to come from. I find it mistrustful that this happened during a windows update while I was using Sonar with no problems. I know how to shut services off. This is not an issue of malware unless you want to consider Sonar malware. I shut down most of the services I did not need. Windows update setting was set to ask before downloading. I don't know how it got changed back to the default setting. I have used windows since 3.1 and there have been times when I received updates that have screwed everything up. So yes I suspect updates as well. Not so much the update as the config change. Still I am not saying that windows is the problem. I just know that the issues came about after an update. I still have the issues and I am still looking for the solutions.

In Win7 a list of installed updates can be found by opening the Control Panel and going to "Programs and Features". In the left hand column of the window, near the top is a link to "view installed updates". That opens a list of installed updates, whether the update was successful or failed, and the date. Select an update, and the bar with the help icon at the right end of it then offers the option to uninstall the update (left hand end of same bar). Or right-click on the update for an uninstall prompt. It strikes me the original problem may be a corrupted driver issue. I suggest disconnecting the audio devices then uninstalling the drivers. Reboot and re-install the drivers, then connect the interfaces and see if that helps.

Jonbouy I still have the issues and I am still looking for the solutions. Hence I advocate a good OS imaging policy. While I have imaging software that came with the computer. The last time I used it was way before the Sonar X2 installation. I am trying to avoid reimaging the hard drive or creating a new partition and installing the operating system all over again. uninstalling the updates may not fix the problem as it may be a bug within Sonar and not an update issue. How do I fix this without reinstalling the operating system. Having a regular reimaging policy does not help the current situation. If this is a cakewalk bug then reimaging will not help. That is why I asked if anyone has had the same issues. Is there a link where cakewalk has a list of known issues? If this is a bug what would be the point to reimaging. I am thinking about going back to X1. All I need is a little information before I do.

My 2 cents: I have automatic Windows Updates turned off on my main DAW - the only time it's ever connected to the internet is for software authorisations and suchlike On my other machine which is permanently connected to the net and has Sonar X2 installed, I just let Windows do what it wants to do, so it's easy to compare the performance of the 2 machines when running Sonar. All I can say at the moment is that they are both running fine - the last Windows Updates have done nothing to upset Sonar in any way.

I don't know many people that would use two different audio interfaces and switch between them. I do it because I got different speakers routed to the other interface and I can hear what the mix sounds like on a different set of speakers. Kind of hard to change now that it is greyed out all the time.

I too have not experienced any issues with the last round of updates. In control Panel/Programs and Features, you can turn on Show Updates. you may be able to uninstall the recent or selected updates or perhaps you could use System Restore to go to an earlier time: this will tell you what's going on.

So now we have a thread stating Beware of Windows updates, causing two dozen further people down the line to start believing mythical bogey-men are causing their problems when Windows updates were again not the issue here. ...and so it goes. Indeed 'beware of Windows updates' but good policy allowing you to roll back completely to before you had problems is still good policy and doesn't promote mis-information. I'm sorry I can't help with your issue at this time but hopefully my comments will cause somebody to benefit from the preventative measure that will relieve them from similar headaches to the one you are currently having. System restore doesn't cut it and in any case an image takes less time to do than a system restore. http://disk-image.com/

I installed updates for the first time in months on Sunday. The first time I tried to open a project after that, X2 crashed. I tried it in X1... same deal. I then went back to X2 and opened the project in Safe mode and disabling all the plugins. That worked, so I went through one at a time disabling the plugins and found that it was the very last one, a Frank's Midi Plugin. I deleted it and went on my merry way. Then it happened again today. Not feeling like going through that god-awful manual process again, I decided to just reimage using a backup I created a couple weeks ago. Hopefully that resolves the issue. I'm at work now, so I won't be able to test it till tonight. Although I can't say with absolute certainty that it was one of the updates that caused the problem, it's the only thing that changed on my computer prior to the project no longer working.

I concur that a massive 13 files Windows 7 update on 11/14/2012 has made my normally hyper-fast computer slow and sluggish. Even something as simple as shutting down the computer now takes much, much longer. In the past, shutting down would take 5 seconds or less. Now, the Windows 7 "shutting down..." screen sits there for over a minute before finally shutting down. I haven't been brave enough to install X2 yet, but I can tell you that X1 is running more erratically than before the Windows update, but there is no one recurring problem with X1, as far as I can tell.

Perhaps not of interest, but some Windows Updates will NGen after install. So, by this I mean create a native image for your hardware... http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6t9t5wcf(v=vs.80).aspx It doesn't have to be a .Net app for the installer to try to create a hardware specific image of an exe for you, and this can burn your processor a little. If you already run hot, it could cause a few drop outs within the immediate window after the updates as the Services NGen in the background. This doesn't always happen, but it might. This is one of the reasons I let my laptop install software in the dark of night (3 AM or whatever). Then, when I get up in the morning, there's no waiting. All the work is done. If there is a problem, roll back to the restore point.

My method is to let win update download; but then I install. This way if there is a reboot needed because the updates are to files in use, you can see what was successful or not. Then you can try and reinstall the unsuccessful updates again and this often times results in success. Microsoft say that updates can fail because of the order of install or one update relies on another update to be successful. Sometimes you need to reboot before you can successfully install the updates that failed. Haphazard updating can be the cause of problems either after the install or further down the track. Don’t Microsoft staff have a name for updates like”Panic Tuesday”.

Marcus Curtis I have not had any serious issues until the updates were installed and the computer wanted to reboot. I had no idea that windows was updating itself. I turned automatic updates off. I don't know how it got turned back on again...ahhh the mysteries of buggy software. Now I am waiting for the next update and I hope it is soon. stupid windows updates It hijacked my computer as well. I would never have turned on my windows updates to "download and install automatically", but somehow I've also just noticed they are back on ? Perhaps a windows update turned this back on ? I regularly update windows, and also have not experienced any issues related to Sonar X2 or anything else on my system. +1 for keeping a complete system image backup, which I do monthly. For this I use the windows 7 backup, which now includes all system data, and software installed, for a complete restore.

Just the other day Windows installed a bucket load of updates, and I v'e had no real issues[laptop] except,a buss panned hard right wasn't showing any signal on the metering,in X2. I thought it was me,as Iv'e been fooling, around with "extra" busses, just for the heck of it,but I saved and closed X2,and when I re-opened,the buss meter started showing signal. About a day before the updates,I was listening to one of my own songs on soundcloud, and when it got to the solo, the laptop violently BSOD'ed,and started screaming, like a cat sort of,and would not stop, until I removed the battery, which was a hassle as I have dual USB fan "duct taped" to the bottom,it was very weird. I had to go out and came back, booted up,no drama, then the Windows updates, and then I started working in X2. That's about it as far as problems with X2 lately, and I let Windows update do "it's thing",always have,I probably won't stop now. Though that's only the second Blue Screen for this lappy,I think the dust maybe building up,that screaming noise is still haunting me though! Bob
