Big Band Tune - Eggs and Pizza
Hi all. Uhmm, this one goes back in time a little bit, such as the 1930's and 1940's. I got the urge to write a big band tune, it's a slower swing tune intended to be from that era. It's been fun, and I thought I'd request some critical feedback so I can work some more on the tune next weekend. Eggs and Pizza http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9364102 Thank you, Thomas

Neat tune. Not crazy about some of the samples, but the tune is really cool! Enjoyed it. Keep at it! The composition is very inspiring.

Thank you, Tap. I appreciate the feedback. I have plently to learn about samples - I used primarly the TTS-1. I'm currently reading and learning all I can about samples. I'm looking forward to upgrading in that area. I love your pizza pic : ) Thank you, Thomas

Yeah the song is really nice but some of the samples give it away. Give sound selection some more time and this will be great. What DAW are you using? TTS is a nice skecthpad but for final mixdown it's almost always better to use something else if you have it.
Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

Hi Legion, I am running 8.5PE. I used TTS for upright base, woodwinds and brass (except for 1st trumpet where I used Dimension Pro). I am looking at a number of sample vendors like EW, Chris Hein, Garritan, SampleModeling, etc. but still researching and have more to learn before I can decide which I should invest in. By the way, your tunes "Last Night" and "Need You Here" are awesome and are definitely my favorites. I appreciate your feedback, thank you. Best Regards, Thomas

I have warm feelings when listening to big band music. I remember my parents dancing around, laughing and enjoying being together. I'll say this is a little different that the Glen Miller genre but I really enjoyed it. you did a really nice job on this!

Nice song and arrangement! I sort of agree with previous posters about the samples but it's a cool tune, regardless. Nice job.

Yep, love the tune, and I like what you want the song to be! (If you know what I mean!). I have enormous troubles with brass patches. It's one of the hard things to get right when we're making all the sound "in the box". It's also the main reason I don't use brass in my stuff -- not because I don't like it (after all, Cake rule, man!) but because I can't avoid the 'cheap synth' sound (no offense intended, please). My Roland Juno G has some awesome brass patches and I still cant escape 'that sound'! So, until I buy a 'bone and remember how to play, it's 'NoBrassForMe'! So, good luck, and congrats on coming up with a great tune.

Thanks Daniel. I am starting to wonder if I should really invest in a nice virtual library, or just hire local college musicians to record real brass and woodwind parts. Or maybe check into web services that may do that. I worry about laying out a big investment for a nice library but still get recognizably 'synthy' brass and woodwinds. I definitely have more to learn about VIs and getting authentic sounds before doing something. Many thanks, Daniel, from a fellow (and former) trombone player, Thomas

Being a retro-phile, I love this number. I agree with some of the comments above about the samples, but this is a cool tune. Freddy J

Thank you Freddy J for your feedback. By the way I like your "Automatically" animation and accompanying tune to boot. Quite inspirational to me as my son and I are both into learning animation to put some visuals to our tunes. Thanks again, Thomas

Thanks Thomas. It was my first feeble attempt using a free animation program (Anim8or). If I do any more I think I'll ask my son to do the animation --- he's studying that at university . Please let me know if you post any of your creations. I look forward to hearing more of your songs. Freddy J

Great composition but I have the same comments on the General MIDI. There are a few exceptions with general MIDI as the Vibraphone and Flute for example are really quite good. The cool part is once you invest in all those new synth packages, you can just port this into that and bingo!

Thanks Freddy J, we'll do. And thanks Daryl, I am anxious to one day finally decide which virtual instrument package(s) to go with and then replace my instruments. I appreciate your feedback! Thomas
