"Big Fat Power Solo"

Ok, I don’t often record covers or play on online collaborations (control freak), but here ya go…
Mick Emery is a very talented Sax player who recorded this cover of a Sam Cooke tune, using a Synthaphone (what ever that is)… … Anyway he asked me to play some guitar fills, and a big fat power solo (again, what ever that is)… and I reluctantly agreed so here it is…

Very nice work the "power solo", fits well. Heavy yet clean and sweet. Transitions nice with the sax.

Very cool. Nice mix, very enjoyable tune.

Hey, I liked that Frank - a great Sam Cooke tune to cover. I hadn't heard this one in awhile. Excellent chops on guitar, as always. I liked the rhythm electric tone - a bit of chorus sounds nice there.

Nice job on the lead as well.

IMO, this would be a good one to close out a show with at a blues club.

This song is in my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Playing is immaculate. If you cant play soulfully over this then you need to toss your instrument in the fire. You both did a great job. It made me want to hear that Sam Cooke voice though. His voice and lyrics in this song are just heavenly. Great Job man.

Real pretty tune Frank! Everything flowed out nicely. Loved it! Soulful is the only word that comes to mind on this.

I like this... lots of soul in that tune.

My only complaint was, that when the guitar solo began, the horns continued to play, and they were competing against the guitar.... IF the horns need to play during the guitar solo, they should be doing complimentary stuff in the background... little fill in licks, and harmony things.... not hanging out playing their own solo...that was very distracting to my ears... hard at times to recognize who was in fact playing the solo....

nice tune....just need to have the guitar solo be a guitar solo.

Yeah, I think that middle horn section will be removed or rolled back in the final mix… but then that’s beyond my control… I’m just the guitar player on this project….

    Frank

I listened to this last night and could have sworn I commented on it.

I guess my post disappeared into the power solo.

The ax playing was great as always and a nice job all around

for a reluctant collab this is really nice, Frank!

your bass is a little heavy, tho and could use a little low end cut to tame the lowest harmonics. I agree with herb that the horns and the guitar are competing when the solo kicks in.

really great playing, tho, as usual.

I liked it, it's not my favorite nonat tune though. It feels like there's some competition between all of the instruments when that solo comes in, like it's too busy and they need to make some room for that fat guitar solo?

That was actually kinda the antithesis of a power tune. It was laid back and mellow. Very chill.

Enjoyed it a lot. The synth sax sounded great. Impressive actually. Great licks on the guitar. Mix sounded fine here for the most part, with the exception getting the sax to be a bit more "there"; more forward.

    Cheers

Ron – Yes I’m hip… I get those senior moments from time to time…

Reece – Thanks for the critique… Like I said this mix was for the most part, out of my control…

Thanks Tom… Got to love sammie …

Robby – Well, this is not really notnat song, but thanks for listening and commenting… Actually I'd love to be have a crack at re-mixing, and mastering this tune... First thing I'd do is re-do that " big fat sour solo""...

Thanks... You’re right, the "Synthaphone” needs to be more prominent, and if I could, I’d re-do the drums, and guitars altogether…

    Hey Not,
I really enjoy the tunes you post, but, if I am being honest, this mix needs lots of work.
I'd love to hear your sax player play his real sax on this, cause the synth sounds, well... synthy, but that's not for me to decide.
I see it's not your baby and you're just helpin' out, so I'll say it sounds pretty good, but could use some tweakin'.

Lovely solo Frank, melodic and gritty at the same time. I know you're not responsible for the mix, so I hope you won't mind me saying that it's not a patch on your usual stuff.

'bout the only thing I like here apart from the song of course, is your contrib.

I'm gonna get me some 'Love in my Eye' to wash my ears out...

Drums are too boomy and the rest of the instrumentation sounds like a fairground organ to me.

Anyway I like you being a control freak.

    Ouch!
When I talk to Mick again, I'm gonna tell him to watch out for this place, it's a tough crowd...
Just kidding, I'm sure he'd appreciate the constructive criticism...
    I certainly do...
    Thanks again everyone...
