Big Step Forward in Recording

Yesterday, we did an auto punch on the lead guitar, with a loop set to start 2 bars before the punch in. I left John alone for 3 takes and the 3rd one is da bomb! It may not mean much to you pros, but for this retired guy to be finally getting something approaching professional in Cakewalk(since DOS!), I have had many starts and stops over the years, but now that I have the time to watch the videos, I am coming along.... I have also replaced a flat bent note section in the intro with copy/paste. Obviously I am now into the editing/mixing mode.....

I am one happy guy!

Just wait until you start mixing! Learn some basic fundamentals and how certain effects can really polish up your tracks and then your done for! Start playing with mix recall and mix scenes and you'll "disappear" for long stretches of time. You'll have to let someone know, so they don't send a search party after you!

I did get plugins with presets, which helps tremendously. That z3ta thing is beyond my comprehension. I use Nectar 2 and Elements for vocals. Bias and TH2 for guitars, etc. Everything is recorded straight in.

Cool beans! I'm retired, hooked into the VA for medical, and getting all creative after years as a desktop tech. I even grew my hair long to remind me to be creative. At least that is my excuse, other than it's been on my bucket list for years.

I grew my hair long too after buying Sonar... but that's because I'm too broke/cheap to pay for haircuts and razors nor am I surrounded by cute punk girls to maintain the line of my mohawk. I also can't throw or dodge a punch anymore when such a hairstyle attracts negative attention... and really mohawks haven't been unique, interesting or creative for about almost 20 years.

Really should do something about these split ends though... and receding hairline.

Thing is it's receding into a "widows peak" type shape. It's almost like my scalp is naturally punkifying... that or I'm turning into Dracula.

    Well that's not so bad.
You can be the life of the party.

Think about it a second.... a mohawk receding to a point while drinking beer is more or less a directional signal, and if you plan your night just right, by 2am your friends can drop you in the pool and make a compass out of you!

    Good for you.

The learning curve is steep for this endeavor.  Not just for a DAW like Sonar, but also for all of the audio engineering techniques and theories that go into producing a song.  I was a complete newb not long ago.

Sonar is a comprehensive application, and like AutoCad or similar professional, robust software, there always seems to be something else to know or discover.  I'm just now getting around to FX Chains in the ProChannel.

    Keep moving forward....

Stick with it.  I'd like to think that retirement leaves plenty of time for SONAR, but everyone I know that is retired wonders how they managed to work since their days are full up w/ stuff to do.

Being a partially disabled veteran(diabetes-Agent Orange) has given me the time(excuse) to concentrate on writing and music. I try to carve out at least 3 hours a day on each one, but no guilt when life intervenes... I'm not going anywhere...
