Bit Depth conversion

I couldn't seem to find a Sound Forge forum and I know a lot of you use it, so I thought I'd give my question a shot here.

If I'm in SF and want to convert the bit depth from 24 to 16, there are a few options regarding dither and noise shaping. The Dither drop down has: Half Rectangular, Rectangular, Triangular. High Pass Triangular and Gaussian.

Noise shaping has: High Pass Contour and Equal Loudness Contour.

The presets that come up are High Pass Triangular and High Pass Contour.

Just trying to get a general consensus of what would be the most commonly used.

Thanks.

Triangular would probably be the most common choice when Powr-3 isn't available. Personally, I use Ozone for word length reduction, and use Ozone's proprietary MBIT+ dither algorithm.

That said, however, the choice of dither algorithm isn't something you need to worry about. For all popular genres, I would challenge anyone to identify which dither was used. You can't.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'd challenge most to identify whether dither was used at all.

That's always kind of been my feeling about it to.

Yeah.. I can't tell the difference most of the time. If it's an old school HiFi mix maybe but not on modern mixes.

Can I tell if dither is used? Sometimes. Can I tell what type? No.

I think the popular view is. If you have to use dither before final mastering, use a flat triangular dither with no noise shaping. For final mastering, pick your favorite. POW-r 3, Mbit, UV22HR, IDR blah, blah. They all work great and are a version of the "equal loudness" contour.
