Bitflipper's Gone Country

Well, it doesn't really sound like Country to me, but I put it into the Country Rock category on Soundclick because it's a smaller category. It's fun to see your song on the first page of a chart, and this one's already at #18 one day after posting -- try doing that on the Rock Instrumental chart, with its 80,000 songs.

Click on "My Stuff" in my sig and scroll down to the last song, "It's All Right".

The mix is rough and I have a big hole in it to fill - with what exactly I haven't decided. Suggestions are welcome.

I also have a long end-jam and fade that's boring and was meant to be the foundation of some killer jam -- but so far I haven't been inspired to come up with anything there, either. Again, creative suggestions are welcome.

    Dave,
I'm with ya! This one has got just the right amount of twang. Very nice work (if this had been my mix I wouldn't even have thought of the word rough). I see where you could easily fill this one up with extra stuff but it is right nice on it's own.

Thanks for the kind words. So maybe the big accordian solo I've planned isn't really needed?

I am likin' this Dave! To me it sounds very Eric Clapton (Lay Down Sally-ish) meets Led Zeppelin (South Bound Suarez-y)...I love the overall feel. It has some country, definitely, but that doesn't define it. It has its own loosey-goosey groove. Then the chorus makes me think of Pure Prairie League meets the Moody Blues. Sorry for all the comparisons, but that's how I experience music. Great stuff for a computer geek!!!

    Nice one, Bit!

My take? A little old ZZ Top flavor here and there....a bit of Moody Blues (as mentioned)....and a little Jeff Lynn in the production.

This one fits no mold for sure. Very different - very cool.

Yeah, this is a fun one; nice up tempo, great hooky runs and accents. You should ask James to do some Les Paul riffing, he's all plugged in and ready to go!

Wow. Jeff Lynn, Moody Blues, ZZ Top, Clapton, Zep -- such flattering comparisons! If there is anyone I aspire to emulate, it's Jeff Lynn. Most of my favorite Tom Petty tunes were produced by him, and ELO's Time is one of my all-time favorite albums. In my ultimate fantasy, Freddy Mercury is still alive and is being produced by Jeff Lynn.

I still have a big hole in the middle of the song and haven't decided what to fill it with. Anybody want to do a guitar solo for it?

Not exactly something I listen to a lot, but I like it !! Great song, very well mixed, for me the drums could be just a bit louder, but that's just my metal head saying that . It doesn't need anything extra.

I'm of the opinion that sheds are grossly overrated. What you REALLY want is a nice poolhouse with a hollow bench in which you can store stuff (like pornos and drugs, or, alternatively, towels and chlorine sticks), with the option of upgrading to a decent mid-sized barn when the cows come home... Although Tom of project shed's shed does have a certain rustic homeyness often lacking in today's detached on-property covered structures. Other options include sublimely carved cedar gazebos and simple yet pragmatic 2x4-inspired Daddy-n-Me treehouses. At this point, I feel the most appropriate course of action is to excuse myself from further embarassment. As you were...

    YeeeeeHawww!!!! That's a fun tune!

Actually, I agree with you Dave - it's twangy, but not necessarily country. Very catchy melody, nice harmonies. Excellent guitar work and sound. And, I love the bass line coming out of the song!

Yeehaw, indeed. Thanks for listening, everyone!

This song started out as a jam. I guess that sort of comes across even now. I had just gotten my Axiom 49 replacement from the Fed Ex angel and wanted to break it in. Cranked up my reliable jam buddy, Jamstix and started jammin', whacking out the bass line on the new Axiom. A while back somebody commented that nobody does fast songs anymore, so I set the tempo to 200 bpm and started it up. I figured if anything could break the Axiom it would be a thumping bass line at 200 beats per minute!. Good news is the Axiom is still intact and fully functional.

I hadn't really noticed how prominent the bass line was until Ognis' droll comment. So I pulled it back some and remixed it. The revised mix is uploading as I write this. But then cryophonic comes along and says he likes the hot bass. Gee, I hope I haven't farked it up trying to please Ognis.

John, I'm glad you liked the fiddle, because I spent quite a bit of time getting that down. Now I remember why I don't play at 200 bpm all the time -- it's a lot of work!

    Soundclick is changing.

Either way, hey bit, I should have mentioned cool track. You have to take into account that I'm listening to what by alot of people's standards would be a huge stereo. my front's have an 8" and a 10" each, plus I have a 12" sub behind my chair (and of course a center, and rears). But, the reason I said the bass stood out in yours, was because I had beeen listening to music for a little over an hour (beatles, zeppelin, doors, you know mostly older stuff), and they all had a consistant bass level. Then when I clicked your link, the bass nearly rattled pictures off my wall! It's not really that it sounded bad, it was just a tad too much in comparision to what I had beeen listening to. I'm getting ready to see the family now though, so will give a listen to the newly mixed track as soon as I get back. I will say this though, other than the bass being kinda high on that, you are very talented when it comes to mixxing, because the rest of the track sounded really well mixed.

OK, thanks for clarifying, Ognis. I'd appreciate it if you'd give another listen, as I have pulled back the bass in the mix as well as taken a little bottom off the EQ. Let me know what you think.

Assuming Soundclick comes back online, that is.

Ah, it's back. Great track and production, love the vocal treatment, nice vox in every way. Great riffs, almost Rockabilly definitely way cooler than Country.
I'm listening on laptop speakers (which can hear bass guitar just fine) and it ain't there at all so you may want to rethink your tweaking. Of course, i didn't hear it before so i don't know if you had your mids right then but i'd definitely take a look at them now.
    Nice mix over all.

Hmm. Maybe this is the old "do I need a subwoofer" question. I've resisted buying one because my monitors are flat down to 45Hz, and what's really below that? Some of the kick and the low E string on a bass. I have a hard time justifying a $2,000 sub for that.

Dave - I clicked on your link but I got this Death_Metal tune playing "I love to tear your flesh apart!" I really like this "country" song man! This tune has a zillion different influences on it. Jean Luc Ponty style fiddle playing on this. Fantastic! Is that you on geetar??? This is a well-crafted, energetic song. Tasty licks, good mix. What's not to like? I like this the best out of all your songs so far. Don't get too picky on the mix, you'll shoot your eye out kid!

Well, guys, I have to confess that I am not a guitar player at all. All the "guitars" you hear were done on the Yamaha MO8 synth. In fact, every part was done on the MO8 except for the bass (Kurzweil PC2R) and drums (Jamstix 2). And the vocals, of course - but I'd fake that too if I could.

There is still a big hole in the middle of the song that I'd invited any real guitarists to fill, but got no takers so I've decided to put in a Jerry Lee Lewis style piano solo there. I've got a gig this weekend so I'll probably not tackle that until Sunday. Nothing like playing live to loosen up those creaky old fingers.
