I do a lot of audio CD burning - several hundred CD's every year. The current drives - 5 USB connected drives, have been in use for over 5 years.
Disable the Windows CD burning option and see if that helps. I've seen burning problems because of the Windows burning functions. Also, if you have any "packet writing" CD software installed (e.g. Nero "InCD", Roxio "drag to disc") disable those as they have been known to interfere with burning.
However, as sock monkey notes, try a different batch/brand of CD-R's and see if that makes a difference. Avoid Memorex brand discs, they have a flakey history. I only use Taiyo Yuden discs for my audio burning.
