Bizarre thinking... Opinions needed!
Ok, I keep all my music on my computer or iPOD's now. I've either sold or given away all of my CD Juke Boxes and I no longer have my nice stereo anyway. So... I've got boxes and boxes of CD's (in old printer paper boxes) sitting in storage which is costing me a lot. Are there really any good reasons not to sell them to a used CD store? I have no idea what you can get for them, but even $3 each would be over $4,000! What do you guys think? (And, if anyone has experience in this, I'd love to know the best method for selling them: In one big sale or one by one, etc.)

Collectors may be interested but, who buys CDs nowadays (aside me and I'm not a collector)? And I still have my "NAD" HiFi stereo with the truly amazing "Mission" speakers (over 20 years old).

I actually just found three places nearby that pay between $0.05 and $4.00 per CD (obviously based on quality and whether they already have a couple of hundred of a title). Since all of mine look like they were just bought new, I only have to deal with the second part. Still better than shelling out money each month to keep them in storage...

Chances are that it will never come up, but I thought I read where having a copy on your hard drive is "fair use" if you own the CD. If you don't have the physical copy and the RiAA lawyers find you it's considered piracy since you can't prove that you bought it.

If you re-sell/give away the orriginal CD then you're required to delete/distroy any copies you may have made.

I'm going through a similar dilemma...planning a whole bunch of new shelving in my living room, and I'm working out how much I need, and I see my CD collection and think "aw, do I have to figure in room for those?" Same goes for my DVD's - 99% of them I have watched once and never watched them again. Why am I keeping them? As some kind of trophy to commemorate things I have watched? And then there's the books...I was always brought up never to get rid of books, but why do we keep books that we're never going to read again? There's a bunch of Carl Hiaasen novels that I really enjoyed but I will never read them again. And my God, all of those outdated computer manuals. Outlook 2007. A guide to Excel VBA programming for a project I never actually started. Macromedia Fireworks MX....my, these should have been thrown out years ago!

Heh... I used to have two 3' x 7' bookcases full of computer manuals (including one just for the ENTIRE set of DEC VAX/VMS manuals). Got rid of almost all of those when I had to move out of my house.

well, it can happen same as with vinyls, they may become classics and hard to find hence expensive in few years. On the other hand CD players slowly going away so...who knows. I personally prefer to have a record with box and color cover then just mp3 folder... Would you like to have a virtual girlfriend you cannot touch or open? I don't think so...

Karyn If you re-sell/give away the orriginal CD then you're required to delete/distroy any copies you may have made. Those were the concerns I used to have which is why the CD's are still taking up so much space in my storage unit. I no longer care about this aspect (having over $650k of your hard-earned money stolen because you were the only one playing by the rules can have that effect on you). The RiAA lawyers are primarily concerned with movies now and even there they are being stonewalled. That said, I probably could prove that I paid for the music anyway if it ever really came down to it... The main thing for me is that I KNOW I did pay for them and that's enough. I'm mainly wondering if I'll ever end up with some huge jukebox for fun to put them in. I used to have three Sony 400 disc jukeboxes, two 300's and a 200 (plus other 200's that I gave to my parents or to friends). I had two remotes that could each control three of the jukeboxes daisy chained together. Unbelievably clunky (and heavy!). I can't believe how much better having them on the PC is (especially now that Chaos Choir has turned me on to MediaMonkey - iTunes is history!).

I don't think you'll get top dollar if you bring a massive number of CDs in all at once. I would take a few in at a time to each store. It might take longer, but I think you'll get more cash.

I might just sell the bulk as one BIG lot too. There's a lot of quality stuff in there... I was also just thinking about the concerns expressed above. I've been buying CD's since they first came out 30 years ago and not once has any one made me prove that I had the actual CD even if I was using a copy in my car, my iPOD, my MD or on a cassette. Plus, most of what I get now is downloaded - so no CD anyway. Oh yeah, and this includes over 750(!) albums that I just downloaded, legally, for free from here.

just check prices on amazon or ebay of some CD's from the past - some cost like 30$ and more, why? because you cannot buy them anymore at stores.

Unfortunately, owning a CD is almost the only option these days if you want to own your music. Online/cloud music is moving to a subscription model, where you lose everything if your subscription is not longer being paid. Even with a download to your hard drive, there are potential problems moving the files to new devices, and even more so if you want to sell, loan or give away your collection of digital music. If the company who manages your licenses goes belly up, you can lose access to your DRM protected songs. I buy CD's at used CD stores in preference to downloads. They belong to me, and I can use them like any other property.

I think those storage hunter guys consider a CD to be about a dollar each in their second hand stores.... not real value there. I'd pull them out of storage and convert them to MP3 and sell the the CD if it is a space/storage issue.

I am surprised that there are people willing to buy CDs. I thought they were going the way of the dodo. If I could unload them I would. I see the legal implications of not having them but if I were living on the edge then it wouldn't matter. What are the chances of being arrested for playing Three Dog Night without a CD?

Starise What are the chances of being arrested for playing Three Dog Night without a CD? Maybe nil. But playing The Beatles of Metallica without a CD might get you a weekend cleanup the freeway gig in an striped suit.

After about five years of not delving onto my giant CD collection, Ever, I finally freed up a lot of space by getting rid of the jewel cases and putting them all in some of those 3-ring CD binder things. I have like, 12 folders worth of them, but it's less than half the space. And a year later, I STILL haven't looked at them. Everything I need is on Spotify. Yeah, I pay for the Premium membership. There have ony been three or so incidents where I couldn't find what I wanted on Spotify. And they were crazy obscure. But the vinyl (and omg! Cassette!) collection is still there... Oy.

I sold almost all my CDs, cassettes and vinyls way back in 2004. I was moving all the time, they were a source of worry more then enjoyment as everything I listened to was on the computer. Once in a while, I miss an album or a song, then I just buy it on iTunes or such. There are a few albums which I prefer to keep and have in the highest possible quality, but for the vast majority, MP3 is good enough. I'd rather spend an occasional $10 and not have to worry about carrying all that stuff I never use. Maybe if we had a house, it'd be different. But even then - I'm all for Feng Shui and simplicity.
