ORIGINAL: M

Below is a link to the Black Friday forum edition. (Also known as the 3 Dog Night version... ) Everyone who contributed tracks made it onto this mix!

Vocals are shared by:

jmarkham (Jeff) - panned R a bit
Pluto - center
CrayZee_one (Mark) - panned L a bit

Background vocals are courtesy of jmarkham - Thanks, Jeff! Don't those sound great!? They make the choruses, to me! (As they do on Steely Dan's recording, too, IMO.)

The basic track is me, M, on bass and rhythm guitar with MIDI'd Wurlitzer and drums.

Guitar solos and some reference as to where they appear are as follows:

mlavin00 (Mitch) - intro to 1st verse
ed_mcg (Ed - yes, Ed plays guitar, too!) - 4 bars following 1st chorus
ed_mcg (Ed) - 4 bars following 2nd chorus
RLD (Roger) - solo section (middle 8 and chorus changes)
mlavin00 (Mitch) - fills during 3rd verse
Daddy?! (Mike) - following 3rd chorus, about 2:54
RLD (Roger) - 3:07
mlavin00 (Mitch) - 3:15
Daddy?! (Mike) - 3:23
jimrocks22 (Jim) - 3:38
mlavin00 (Mitch) - 3:45
RLD (Roger) - 3:53

As might be expected, I had plenty of guitar submitted! So much so that I didn't have room to play on this myself, other than the rhythm track. But, I don't think I'm missed. These guys all (vocalists included) did an admirable job.

This was fun! Hope you like it (and I hope no-one's offended by my edits to create this joint-effort mix).

Feel free to critique.

I still mean to produce some separate mixes featuring the vocalists individually.

So, first mix (right-click and save suggested):

Black Friday - forum edition

Cool mix and very tight. Sounds like you had a lot of fun doing it, too, absolutely great job!

Heavy Weather
Yes, they were at the top of their game with that one, Jaco especially. I saw them play live a few times in that era, that band rocked (or jazzed, or whatever), and Jaco was a force of nature back then. Excellent tunes on that CD, even if some of the Arp 2600 bits sound a little dated.

I have to agree that Jeff's backing vocals were exception, it's no mean feat to get the timing, phrasing, and pitch locked in to get that sound just right.

LOL to hear
"Jim Rocks" was that Pluto?

Yeah it was me. It was M's idea, to let everyone
know who's playing and when.

I like it! Good job on the vocals Pluto. I like the way Mark let each of you go at it in turns. Your adlibs really added alot.

billboutin - Thanks, Bill! Glad you enjoyed it. I listened to it again today and went, "Too much 'verb on the vocals. . . " I was afraid of that!

ed_mcg - Yep, yep, and yep. With you on all counts, Ed!

pluto - Oh, yeah, "Just in case you hate it, it was M's idea!" Yeah, I thought that worked out okay. I thought the contributors might like hearing some acknowledgement. Of course, I guess no-one's acknowledging the vocalists, are they? An oversight!

marcoR - Yeah, the guitarists started sending me stuff right away, and I got probably 2 or 3 times as much as I was able to use from each of them. The vocals came in after. Mark's vocal tracks came in the day before I posted! Glad you liked it. Thanks for listening.

jimrocks22 - "Your adlibs really added alot." Agreed. I think I told Pluto offline that my favorite part is where he says "yeah" in the middle of the second verse. I just like how it worked there.

LOL.... that's not the way i meant it. I actually
thought it was a good idea too. How else would anyone
know who's playing and when? I guess i should've
thrown in "good idea" in my post, huh? But hey, your
way of looking at it is good too... (blame M if anyone
hates the adlibs)... lol. I didn't look at it that way.
All kidding aside... i think the adlib intro's were a
neccessity in this type of forum venture.

Felt this deserved a bump for all the
hard work M put into it.
