Santana's is the commercially definitive version no doubt.

But the Mac version is sublime too.

Carlos Santana's version. It's not only commercially better but also musically. Without a doubt.

I've heard it done by so many times by bands having to pad out their set list because the bar man has asked them to play for an extra half an hour that I gave up caring sometime during the '70's.

Oh, yeah, definitely Santana, although, to be honest, until now, I never even realized that Fleetwood Mac recorded it first.  But, actually both versions sound great in their own specific time period, and we're kind of comparing apples and oranges genre-wise.

Santana's version was actually the fourth song that I ever attempted to sing in a band when I was thirteen years old, so the song brings back some fun memories for me. :)

Its a difficult one but I think I would come down on the side of Santana. I prefer the vocals on Mac's version but the playing and arrangment on Santana's

Santana's. This has been one of my favorites forever, although I do like some things about the vocals on the Fleetwood Mac version (not the cheesy outro, though. Shuffle off to Buffalo, anyone?)

Peter Green's version is in my taste far superior. Vocals, guitar, drumming etc are all spot on for the message of the song.

I'm actually put off Santana after hearing his attempt of BMW. Don't think it does the original any justice. The rhythm, tones and overuse of sustain actually detract from the song. My opinion is that he mashed it.

Wow!  Black Magic Woman has been one of my all-time favorites since it came out on the radio via Santana.  Thanks for educating me that Peter Greene et al originally recorded it.

I like the Santana version better, and a lot of my own playing style is modelled after this particular song....and I've been playing for 47 years...) not that you could tell it from listening to me... LOL)

Bob Oister- You're right-  the memories come flying right back every time I hear it.

    Cool thread!

I first heard the song done by a cover band at the Frankfurt American Youth Activities teen club around '71 or '72.
So, I'm going with Orange Wedge.
