Sweet. I was smart enough to put exe's to all my usual AV/anti spyware programs in a folder on my desktop after building the system even though I didn't install them. That's saves me some time downloading and shuffling exe's around on my dongle. CCleaned the system and now Malwarebytes is running... oh and the MSE Safe Mode full scan turned up nothing. This always happens whenever I think I have a problem. I run scans for a day and aside from a couple times when Spybot S&D found very minor non issues none of the programs find anything. I know these programs work because I've found stuff on other people's systems with them but they were usually dumbasses clicking every little shiny thing that pops up on their screen and open every stupid chain email they receive.

If you have done all that and it seems to be gone... I wouldn't worry about it anymore. Remember the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Just do a disk clone and then things can't get any worse or at least you can go back to where you are now if you do get bigger problems.

As a certified serial overreactor... I'd advise you to wait a bit.

Heh. Yeah I take this stuff a little too seriously sometimes but I can't help it when it comes to the big rig and more sensitive info. I have started a new thread with some "results" if they can be called that.

I will say that Avast's ability to disable various features is pretty uncommon in a "free" antivirus. I've recently gone back to AVG on one of my non-DAW machines that had a conflict with MSE. So, every machine is unique. They're just like people, lol.

Yeah, despite some of its flaws which are mostly manageable it's an excellent program for freeware. Just needs a couple minutes to set up. AVG is (or was last time I used it) quite powerful but man did it ever slow my systems down. Oy.

Personally, I find the benefits of having my DAW internet enabled when I want it to be seriously outweigh the possible downfalls of contracting something nasty.

The pain you have to go through when attempting to use any form of Offline Authorisation compared to the absolute breeze of Online Auth. makes, for me, a HUGE difference and cuts down on this "admin time" by an order of magnitude.

I have backups & images if the worst DID happen, but I always switch on MSE before I go online - plugin the wireless dongle, do what I've got to do and that's it.

+1 To Mr Jones.

The SOS guy (Martin Walker ?) was once quoted as saying basically the same thing. He is a sort of reference I guess.

My machine is connected 100% of the time. Certain parts of W7 are disabled, but so far so good, after x years (can't remember off hand when W7 came out .....)

Jerry

Anyway... I'm gonna let this scan run and make my dinner. If anyone has seen this "Warning" before please let me know. Thanks.

I would remove it and install avast :)
I know you guys want to shot me right now, im sorry.
just my personal advice as I have had issues in the past with getting silly virus's with mse and avast has been solid.
but to each his own, its also kind of hard to argue with some of the forums most knowledgeable people like john and jeff  :)

so, just take it all in and make a corporate decision beepy  :)

Another plus one to Bristol Jonesey.

And, like Joakes, my DAW is connected all the time.

I know it gets bad press here, but I use Norton, and it never interferes and hasn't let anything in. I think many people's views on it are out of date - it is not the resource hog it used to be.

Thanks for all the input guys. Not sure exactly what I'm gonna do in the meantime but the whole system is going to get wiped at some point anyway. IDK... maybe it's fine. The scans aren't showing anything. The last thing will be HiJackThis and hunting around google to check out any hinky looking processes. Unfortunately as I said (or maybe I said it in the other thread) google has turned into a piece of arse in regards to accurate searches. I have no idea what they did but I wish they would go back to whatever algos they were using before.

In fact aside from Bing and the other obvious malware type search engines are there any quality alternatives? I mean someone has to have SOMETHING reliable going on. Cripes I'm almost willing to pay a subscription fee for a good search engine at this point.

Beep at present you have no evidence that you have any trouble due to a virus. I think its premature at this point to take any action that may be unnecessary.  In my view you need a lot more information to make a sound decision.

As hard as it may be for you I would wait and see what happens. Just backup things that are important to you. Prepare for the worst but don't do anything that may be worst them what may never happen.

Best
John

Oh no, John. The system wipe was gonna happen anyway. I want to start from scratch and use all the knowledge I've acquired over the past year to set things up properly. I've been planning to do it for a while. As far as the "virus" causing mayhem on the system I can just restore anyway if the worst happens. I'm more concerned about having info swiped. I'm sure it's fine but as you know... an overabundance of caution is the general rule in Beepsterville. ;-)
