Blank midi item/measure?

Hi. I am crazy new to Sonar Platinum having used only Reaper and Cubase Element 7. I do a lot of measure by measure construction of drum tracks. In Reaper and Cubase, it was just a matter of drag highlighting in the track to the length of a blank item I needed and "insert" command. I can't for the life of me figure this out in Sonar.
I've been watching vids, etc. and know this is probably a really simple problem to fix, but it is crazy important. Lol.
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the welcome, and the reply. Is the fact that I don't see one single measure when I open piano roll just something I need to get used to? I am very used to seeing many items that I glue together when I am done.

in Sonar, you "glue" by bouncing to clip.

Select the clips to be bounced, either by selecting the entire track or control + clicking the individual clips, then right click any of the selected clips and choose "bounce to clip"

If you want to drag a clip out to encompass additional measures, convert your clip to a groove clip by selecting it and control + L. the clip will now have rounded corners and can be dragged out for as many measures as you want.
One word of caution, your source clip MUST be a whole number of measures in length or else the timing will drift.

Yeah, I learned the bounce trick quick. Can't seem to create a blank measure to work with.

Why do you need a blank measure?

In Sonar you don't need to precreate a MIDI item.  Open up the piano roll and plug away!

I did. Twice. Nothing there explains exactly what you're trying to do

"I do a lot of measure by measure construction of drum tracks."
I would like to have a completely empty measure. I write the measure. I would like to have a second completely empty measure, a completely separate item from the first...etc etc...
I've learned how to do this in several DAWs but it seems to not be an option here. That disappoints me as it is integral to my work flow. I tried to post a screenshot of this but I guess pics aren't allowed here.

As was stated above, in Sonar, you don't need to insert a blank measure - just by entering notes into the prv another measure is automatically created for you.

... and once you create a few measures, you can split the item up however you like.  Even measure by measure.

If there's an existing clip in a track, SONAR will tend to automatically extend the the boundaries of the clip to encompass new events. Only if they're more than a measure away will it create a new clip. So your one-measure-at-a-time approach is going to be problematic if you want to keep measures separate (which I understand might be useful/necessary for subsequent arranging).

I think the two least fiddly options are:

1. Alt+click with Smart Tool in the track view to split the clip after the fact (for best results in this scenario, make sure Non-destructive MIDI Editing is disabled in Preferences).

2. Right-click the existing clip, and choose Clip Lock > Lock Data. This will force a new clip to be created for the new events. After you've created several measures/clips, you can unlock everything, and proceed to arranging or doing additional editing of individual clips.
