funny! BUT - the original as recorded by the songwriter - Bruce Springsteen - was not "unintelligibly sung" (sorry - but that's one of my pet peeves - Manfred Mann made the song famous, but they didn't write it - it's a cover!)

And spot on. I always heard "Wrecked up like a deuce and a roaner in the night" and had no clue what it's supposed to say.

I have sung more than my fair share of phonetic lyrics.... right or rong.... it got sung cause the people liked the song.

Manfred Mann made a lot of songs famous ... might even check out a dolphin or a Carol (both Mike Heron of Incredible String Band), and of course the 25 or 50 Bob Dylan covers ... none of them as good as Jimi's but there are some nice pieces all over it. That Carol song is really nice, too and even Mike's version is not as nice ... but almost all of the Dylan songs are much better, of course, we can go as far back as Mighty Quinn!

My personal take on this is that by the time Manfred Mann made the song a hit, none of us kids had a clue what a "deuce" was outside a deck of cards. "Revved up like a deuce" made no sense, so of course we just substituted words we did know, like douche (not that it made any more sense).

craigb How many here originally thought a calliope was a flying machine? Dang, I was happily doing aerobatics in my calliope 'til you said that. I just plunged 10,000 ft and grazed both my knees 'coz of you and your liking for mere technicality. Now I have to spend the next 2 weeks with my legs in calliopes.

It might not have been unintelligbly sung, but even Jon Anderson would be hard pushed to find a meaning out of that lot...

No, I wasn't Reece..just struck me how simple the original is, and how much Manfred Mann did with it. That keyboard intro for example - lovely stuff. Also reminded me what a hugely under-rated singer Chris Thompson is.

Don't get me wrong - I think Manfred Mann's version is a completely different league of superiority than Springsteen's. I kinda agree with that ... this way ... Bruce's version is more rock'n'roll oriented ... while I think that Manfred Mann's version took if off that rock'n'roll stage and made it into a more complete piece with the keyboards, and I think it was easier for most of us to "get" and its "melody" came alive a lot more than Bruce's at the time. But I also would agree that music has changed significantly since then, and it is wider accepted to be able to listen to things without keyboards, as opposed to the seriously oversized keyboard use in too much of the music at the time and place. The funny/weird/strange thing here was a comment that came out of the Melody Maker periodical, that MM always did a song from one of his heroes, and we all know that from his first album he had done a Bob Dylan song in every album ... and that by the time this came out, he was tired of Bob and he was not as creative as he had been before, and he looked to do someone else ... and Bruce became that hero ... for one album anyway! Because in the next album or two or three you found Mike Heron (Singing the Dolphin Through and Ohh Carol) and others.

I never did figure out what it meant to "have the big slip daddy". I assumed it was sexual. But then, I was 15. Everything was sexual.
