Blindsided - My latest original

Like a lot of tunes, this one sort of languished for several months without direction.  Upon revisiting this tune it fell together quickly.

I like this tune a bunch, but then I've heard it a bunch and I'm probably a lot relieved that I finally salvaged the work I had into it.

It doesn't include my newest guitar, but the harmony guitar lines I did with my other "new" guitar, a Telecaster Thinline.  The rest is with my usual and favorite old stand-by guitar.

At at rate, here it is...

Daryl
Blindsided
Blindsided – Caught in a storm
Blindsided – Weathered and worn
Undecided – Which way to go
Unrequited – Questions I pose

Chorus:
No way did I see that comin’
No way out but I keep on runnin’ away

Blindsided – Bolt from the Blue
Blindsided – Missing a clue
Shortsighted – Intuition proved
Misguided – I should have moved
Chorus:
Bridge:
Blindsided caught unaware
It snuck up beside me and poof it was there
I was Blindsided again
Blindsided – Deer in the lights
Blindsided – A shot in the night
Lighted, ignited, stumblin’ blind
United, collided, excited my mind

Chorus (repeat)

Coming in it almost was a bit Talking Heads. Actually, now that I've heard more of it, it still has a little Talking Heads vibe in a way. Nice off the beaten path vocal part combination, and good job on the harmony vocals as well as they fade out after the choruses.

Sounded mostly fine and like what? - smooth rock, well that is something different.

However, I thought the voices were a bit loud in some places or perhaps the entire song.

Hey there Daryl, I listened. It's classic "you" :-)

And that's a good think IMO? I love the organ as do you. It seems many of your songs have this touch.

Also, another thing that I do, that you do as well? Is they way you do harmonies, and "counter point?" I think the reason I enjoy your music so much is that we are cast from the same die...

Good job w/blindsided, I really enjoyed it. It gave me a CSN vibe... Shadow captain? Of a charcoal ship... Trying to give the light a slip?

love the lyrics on this one, the spikyness of those contrasts the music. I see the Talking Heads reference, also a bit of Dire Straits, if these bands were filtered through a USA blues-rock upbringing. Not just great guitaring, but the organ is really top-notch, you have played it as a keyboardist would, not just pads but rhythmically etc...great tune.

Definitely loud enough. Sweetly recorded and played. You might want to look into the modern day usage of the word 'poof'

Totally unique lush vibe and song ... utterly splendid mix with sweet vocal charisma.

The lead vox, while perfect as is, I might have pondered to 'tunnel centrally' a bit more in areas ... as it fills up the stereo field with bigness.  But that is merely my-fad of late as I've discovered other singers toying with the idea of centralized vocs.

    The hook "blindsided" sticks wonderfully.

Montauma - I looked it up, seems to be a British thing started by Monty Python.  Hey it adds to the mystery :)

    Luke, thanks so much.

Phillip - I hear you.  I generally just turn on the mic and go with it, tyring to use as little reverb as I can stand and just a tiny smidge of compression.

Mark -  Thanks, I've always wanted to be a keyboard player but never got the chance.  I know chords because they are a passion of mine, but I keep it simple and I do a lot of takes :)

Janet - Thank you for listening to what would be considered a heavy tune for either of us :)

Vicente, Rik, Herb, Band, Dean, Mark -  Thanks so much, glad you liked it.

Spacecalf - Wow, I've been searching for what genre I play and now I know: SMOOTH ROCK.
LOL - I love it!  I finally know the answer I've been seeking.  Very cool!!

Thanks all.  After the comments I agree the vocals may need to come down just a tweak.  But I strive hard to make sure people can understand my words because I hate when I can't understand the words to a song.... unless it's scat, then it's fine because I'm not trying to understand the words :)

Do an eq cut on the vocals at 700hz with a nice fat Q and the vocals will sit much better.

Daryl your music seems to have a live, performed on stage, vibe that I really enjoy.

I really liked the tone of the intro guitar... it seemed very original.

All your guitar tones seem to be on the edge of familiar yet have a unique personal touch. That's real nice.

The song as a strong groove.

    Thanks for sharing.

    best regards,

What a terrific tune, Daryl. I always like your guitar playing, but the backing vocals really stood out, a nice counter to the lead vocal. And the bass line was really good too. As usual, an excellent mix too. Great job once again.

Wow, nice one Daryl.  This has a nice pop, jazz feel to it.  I really love the interplay of vocals and BGV's.  The guitar work really fit the song and was performed well.  The mix sounded great to me -- everything was separated and clear.
    Nice Job!!!

James, thanks.  I just did that on another tune and it worked well there too.

Mike - I don't really ever try to copy anyone's style or tone.  What I end up with is just a result of all my experience (good or bad).  As a result, my music never sounds like anyone else, and it usually never fits squarely in any genre.

Freddy, Thanks, sometimes they turn out OK.

Maximumpower, you sound like me... there are no guitar players I don't like.  Thanks.

Karalie - Sometimes I almost get it right and I think I'm getting the hang of it, like this one, then I slip, but overall it's definately been getting better.  Too bad I'm too old to live long enough to finally get it right all the time.

    Hey, Daryl,

This is really a great song with excellent playing and dynamite vocals and harmonies!

I really love the layered overlapping harmony vocals, and the double lead solo was very tasty both playing and tone-wise, and sounded perfect in the mix.  It sort of reminds me of a fusion of George Benson, The Atlanta Rhythm Section and Boz Scaggs, which all add up to a great song.

I do agree with the comments about possibly dropping the vocals a little bit.  I'm usually in the same boat with my vocal levels, and I have to consciously force myself to drop them before exporting them, and usually end up lowering them again before they fit "into" the mix instead of riding "on top" of the mix.

    Anyway, excellent job, Daryl!
    Bob
