Blue Green (Good Old Kentucky)
I am fortunate to be married to a beautiful girl from Kentucky. I have travelled there many times in the past 10 years and am always amazed by the kindness and hospitality afforded to me. They are very good folk. When possible we time our trip with going to a Bluegrass festival which is always a highlight. Being up close and personal, hearing the pickers snap those strings and the skill level blows me away. Being from the southern hemisphere my body clock gets turned around and finding myself wide awake one early morning after a solid night of music, laughter, shine and bourbon I wrote Blue Green. Sitting on my Brother-in-Law’s porch looking out over the hills in the early dawn provided thought and inspiration. Blue Green is a tribute to family and friends and the wonderful state of Kentucky. Ian, I like the soundscape on this one, nice and open with all the instruments sitting well. Your vocals are nice and you do justice to Kentucky with this one for sure. I don't have any crits about the mix, this sounds good on my system. Nice job, congrats! Now, if you want some crit that is more about personal taste than production, I can say two things, neither of them are showstoppers though. The first is that your voice is great but some of the lines are delivered a little stilted. As you moved through the song you smoothed out much more. If you are so inclined I think you could retrack some of the vocal lines and everything would be silky smooth. The drums are pretty middle of the road. They sound good but they aren't raising the song up to that next level. Again, if you are so inclined I think that added some flourishes and fills to the drums could polish this gem that extra little bit. Someone on this forum (a long time ago) gave me some advice about drum loops. Not sure what you are using exactly but this could be interesting to you. They told me not to worry about picking the drums from the same library (i.e. keeping a consistent kit sound) and just go with what works. I did a song where I threw caution to the wind, tracked it to a pretty straightforward loop and then went back and redid the entire drum track to suit the guitars without regard to the kit sounds. It turned out great. The drums were lively and really brough the track to life. Anyway, that is my five....or maybe ten cents. Fantastic job and no reason to change anything if you dig it!

The vocals could be a tad clearer (not louder, just crisper, maybe a HPF @ 250Hz). That's my only suggestion of the mix.

Thanks guys for listening and the feedback on the drums and vocals. I appears that I achieved the sound I was looking for. I am remixing a lot of my old stuff with new plugs in and what I have learned over the past few years. I focus on achieving more punch and separation also clearer vocals with not so much reverb. I will get back into the mix first chance I get.

Well, I read Tony's post and I couldn't add anything. He really gave some GREAT suggestions. I think that if you do some of the things he said you could up this song quite a bit. Having said that, I really enjoyed this tune and almost pictured myself on that porch. My family are Missouri farmers and I relate to a lot of what your are saying. Good tune.

Nice classic country kind of tune. Vocals could use a bit more definition.

I'm sitting here in central Kentucky (home boy born and bred) writing this and have to say you captured the spirit of our beautiful state and it's people very well. Great lyrics and the style is just right. I would agree with previous posters about the drums, they could maybe use a little more "swing", but you've already spoken on that so I'd like to hear what you come up with if you revisit it. Great tune, thanks for sharing!

Hi Bob, having a Kentuckian say that I captured the spirit of the people and the state means a lot to me. Thank you. Kentucky has given me so much in return and the wife and I plan to settle there one day when I retire and I will be sitting on my own porch over looking the hills. Looks like I have to dig deep into my limited drum midi libraries for a country beat with swing. I don't have many country beats but I think it will be worth going out and buying one to give this song a lift if I can't find it. Thanks again.
