In general Blue Laws allowed some store in some areas to open on Sundays.  Certain items--food, clothing, and other necessities--were allowed to be sold but not non-necessity items.  Toys and electronics might fall into the non-necessity category.  I remember going to a department store on a Sunday and various departments were roped-off.  Eventually, those laws were relaxed--if not repealed--in New Jersey.  Now, you can buy almost anything at any time.  Other states have their own laws--some of them may apply to beer, wine, and alcohol sales.

Blue laws prohibit selling anything that is blue on Sunday.  Or that gives you the blues.

    Nah
It is a set of laws regulating what can be sold on religious days - Sunday being the main culprit.

to my knowledge - blue laws haven't been "recognized" since I was a kid.  even then they were not "enforced" - but they were observed.  when I was a kid there was almost no stores open on Sundays (a few resteraunts were, but a lot of them weren't).  then the convenient stores started popping up and they were open on Sunday.

I'm thinking that by the time I graduated high school ('81) there wasn't any more "blue law" type activity.  some stores still closed on Sundays, but by that time it wasn't necessarily because of "blue laws" but because they were specialty stores which didn't do much business on Sundays anyway (like appliance stores, furniture stores).  of course, that's all completely changed today.  almost all stores HAVE to be open on Sunday to be able to be competitive.

even most Walmarts are open on Thanskgiving and Christmas Day now.

Beagle when I moved to Dallas in 1980 there were tons of items that were taped off in grocery stores - tools and the likes... But yeah somewhere in the 80s they stopped enforcing them.

My memory might not be 100%, but as you say, sometime in the 80's sounds right.

Beagle It could well have been 81 when they stopped paying attention to them.  I was just amazed at what they could not sell in a grocery store on Sundays when I moved to Dallas in mid 80.

North Dakota was one of the last states to repeal the blue laws - late 80s iirc.  I'm of a mixed mind on this and not just for religious reasons: whether religious or not, the concept of sabbath (a time of rest and refreshing) has been declining in our culture for decades, and 24-hour shopping seems to have contributed to the trend... oh well!

Here in NC.... not sure if this is still the law or not, but it used to be that you could not buy alcohol from 1AM Sunday morning until 1PM on Sunday afternoon.... a 12 hour period.

That kept all the people from buying beer on the way to church and allowed them to buy it on the way home.

There is of course a perfectly logical reason for that....

First, if you wanted a drink, you had to go to church and hope they were having communion and used real wine.... of course not many churches round here use real wine..... it's grape juice, regardless of the bible saying it was wine that Jesus made and drank.  (side note: churches in Argentina used real wine)

Second.... if you could buy beer on the way to church it would set in your car and be too hot to drink when you got out so by restricting the sales to after church..... it was guaranteed to be nice and cool when you got it home.

Third..... all the tee-totaling ladies and gents in church didn't want anyone to have a good time while they were listening to the sermon..... (see reason # 2...I think it applies here too) basically.... no fair you getting a head start on me,  kinda thing going on....

It's still the law in Wake county where my Walmart* is that no alcohol can be sold before noon on Sunday.
You will usually see a passel of men with their beer waiting patiently near the registers every Sunday before noon.

    Beagle and SC,

We moved to Dallas in 1983 and there were still Blue Laws.  I don't recall things being roped off but I do remember getting to the counter at a hardware store on a Sunday and being told we couldn't buy some of the things we'd picked up.
Clothing stores were all closed on Sundays.

That was strange, but the alcohol laws that made moving to Texas like entering a whole 'nother country.  In Illinois if you got pulled over and an old dry dusty beer bottle, with cobwebs in it, rolled out from under the seat, you could get ticketed for "open container".  In Dallas, you could pull out of Keller's (drive-in burgers) with a beer in your hand and give a friendly wave to the cops on your way out.

But then different neighborhoods had different rules and were called either dry, damp (beer and wine only), or wet.  So the restaurants in our neighborhood offered "memberships" so you could buy a drink with your dinner after showing your membership card.

I don't think any of it is like that any more, but there will always a soft spot in my heart for Texas.

(Yeah, yeah, I know, "... and a soft spot in my head for Illinois.")

In Ohio, as late as 1995 (when I graduated from College), you could NOT buy beer or wine or liquor on a Sunday. Period.  All day.  In fact, in High School, I worked at a Supermarket (Big Bear, if anyone remembers those) and we had to pull down barriers at midnight on Saturday and they didn't go up again until midnight on Monday.  Made for some very looong Sundays in College if you were a poor planner, I tell you what...

I was just in Ohio a few weeks ago, and I think that someone said that very recently that had been lifted for beer and wine, but I'm not sure about liquor....
