Drivers will not cause problems at initial power on.  The drivers only come into play when Windows loads and installs the drivers during initialization.

One thing I either missed or was never stated, where the Blue Screen is.  Does this happen at boot up or Before Windows starts to load, or does it happen After or during Windows loading?  If it happens during Widows loading, although it could still be a hardware problem, and nothing is detected on the Power On Self Test, I would be looking at the Operating System drive or even that there was a bad install and it needs to be started over with a drive reformat and complete reinstall.

What SATA port the Operating System is on isn't really an issue.  Just set the boot, in the BIOS, for the drive you want.  If you have a SATA III drive it should be on a SATA III port for maximum speed but it will work OK on a SATA II port.  I have a system with dual boot (Win 7 and Win 8) on separate SSD drives.  The Windows 7 OS drive is on SATA III port 0 and Windows 8 OS drive is on SATA III port 1.  I have an older SATA II hard drive that I use for Sonar Projects, Band in a Box and some other data, and its on SATA III port 2, but it could be on a SATA II port and it would work the same.    My optical drives (2) are on SATA II ports.

Mike- When I want to download freeware, I don't expect the same as with something you pay for, but sites that are contaminated with DOWNLOAD buttons that are not for the software your after scare me s...less. I always try and go to the original vendors site, not a download site. Download sites are well known to add packages to the original, so next thing you know you have waleware or spyware or the ASK toolbar. If you think that's not savy so be it.
I thank you for putting me on the hunt for a 3rd party Memory test, The one I found seems to work fine and runs from the desktop. It will run forever if you let it. I tested it on my laptop overnight.
Jack- Thanks for your insight on sata ports, The blue screen is on posting, just after the Bios screen. So yes, where the OS should load.
The driver issue is for the USB 3.0 port which I know wouldn't cause this issue, but I want to fix that issue as well. The other download might be any BIOS updates which I will approach with caution.
Thanks all, got called to work so this will be on hold until tonight..

I got my Wireless USB thing so it's back on line. It ran a few updates, it re booted a few times while doing this without issue and then I shut it off.
Restart, blue screen..
The blue screen is split second after the Bios screen.
This is the point were you should get the little moving circle.

I checked in the BIOS and mine if Version F3.
There is now a Version F6 which say's it has better drivers for SSD drives...Hmm
There is also mention of improved memory something,,hmmm.
So I'm going to read up on flashing the BIOS, there is a utility built into the bios that I guess makes it easy for idiots like me.

While I was poking around in the bios I noticed mine  under SATA is set in AHCI mode, there is also RAID and IDE modes. is AHCI correct?

I also checked all the drivers and I see there is a Intel Rapid Storage Driver update.
I downloaded all the drivers and I compared versions in device manager. Most are fine.
Not sure where you can look at the chipset driver version , should I just go ahead and install it anyhow?

Just a long shot here, but you say that it blue screens right when the little circle thing is suppose to go round and round. Windows uses the graphics card for this. Maybe something up there?

Also Johnny, not looking at the Mb manual here, but if this is a Mb made to overclock, then there will be info in there to tell you what those SATA connections are for. Are they native or do they run off a third party chip? How many PCI Express lanes each one takes and so on.

Thanks Grem, I have been reading the manual, mostly to bone up on flashing the BIOS. There is 2 way to do it one is download the file and run it from a FAT 32 USB drive , the other is a windows utility that downloads the latest version etc. I'm going to try the USB method.
There seems to be a duo BIOS on this board. You can have a back up.

The Video is built in and the driver is the latest.

The update I have not done is the Chipset driver which looks promising as it mentions both Memory and SSD drive enhancements.

I'm certainly on a steep learning curve here as I've never paid much attention to MOBO details. They always worked without issue. They sort of show the SATA 3 and Express ports and they are numbered, but this Express port is confusing. It say's only one Express device can be attached? There are 4 ports? I will Google SATA Express right now.

But I won't have time until Monday to mess with the BIOS , lots of Family stuff this weekend we are off to see Santa's Workshop in Coeur D Alene Idaho.

%Thanks for all the help everyone

OK I sorted out the Sata Express, seems my MOBO is the first to have this, it's the next big thing in faster SSD drives. So bottom line is you cn use the ports just like any SATA 3 port or 2 are used and the little port when using this new connection forthcoming on later ssd drives.
On the left is the Express stack of 2 ports.

Which of those eight ports are your SSD with the OS on it hooked up to? One set of those ports are native to your chipset. The others are from a third party chip. Maybe you got your OS SSD hooked up in the third party ports and may be running into incompatibly problems. Just offering suggestions.

Re: Blue screen on start up? 2014/12/23 10:31:52 (permalink)
So I thought I'd update the Bios and I made an attempt using the instructions for the USB drive and it failed. During one of the many re boots while fussing about the Blue Screen all of a sudden has writing on it? It say's there is issues ( duh) and offered options for a OS refresh. So I followed through because at this point I see little progress towards a resolve.

It asked for my Windows 8.1 disk and after 10 minutes re booted to my log on screen. My desktop sort of looked the way I left it minus all my program short cuts. It produces a list of the software that was not retained, pretty much everything.
I proceeded to start re installing missing apps. I used all my handy updated mobo driver files which were still in the download folder. So all but the BIOS is up to date now.
I also did Classic shell so I could find stuff!
This of course involves many re boots and total shut down re starts ( my choice) .
No more blue screen ( so far)

So my conclusion is this was yet another case of the OS becoming corrupted after running windows updates. Possibly an update that does not have all it's bytes about it due to internet drop outs which I get occasionally.

But we will wait and see how thing progress as now It say's there is a whack of updates to deal with again , 65. So I set system restore at 10 Gigs for now and am setting restore points before I proceed with each major application install.

Grem the picture is not my board. I just was showing what Sata express looks like.
On my board there is a  sata 3 connector marked 0 and 1 which my OS and DVD are connected to. My data drives are in what is numbered as 3 and 5 of the express sockets.
The deal is if you use the express socket it uses 2 sata ports and that little port on the left, so 3 connections. Google sata express.

Hmmm, sounds similar to an issue I get once in a blue moon and has the screwiest fix. About 5 times in 3+ years I will boot and get invalid startup disk. So, I put in my Win7 recovery disk... It does its startup and says Windows mismatch when attempting a restore and exits (reboots)... I pull out the disk and Windows boots normally. Sort of like a BIOS to SSD fumble.

WOW - what a nightmare.

I am these days not too thrilled with how many reports of Windows corruption I am seeing after running Windows Updates.  I have had it happen to me before, as well.

Perhaps if it happens again, I would consider moving back to Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Anyways, HOPE your issues are resolved now, and I think your idea of creating restore points is a wise one.

I have a dual boot Win 7/8.1 but the 8.1 doesn't really do much.  I have another system with dual boot with Win 8.1 and the Windows 10 preview edition.  Although the 8.1 worked well as my backup when my Win 7 system was down for warranty motherboard repair,  I'm hold out for the finished Win 10 and will dump Windows 8/8.1.

The key to recovery is to have (recent) full drive backups (I use Macrium Reflect).  If there is a major problem, you can restore using the full backup.  I backup to two different hard drives (alternate between them) at least weekly and sometimes more depending on circumstances.  "Backups are not for IF they are ever needed but for WHEN they are needed.

Funny thing is I have full image back ups on my old DAW Windows 7 machine.
I use easeUs, it's free and niffty stuff.
 http://www.easeus.com/?ad&gclid=COrj8oO-3cICFc6CfgodHSsAeA

This one is so new I had not gotten that far. Thank goodness it's not much to put it back as it was. There was no data stored on the C drive other than the Download folder which the restore seemed to keep. all that is left to install is my music apps, Sonar, Nero, Wave Lab and Gold Wave. Then Office for lyrics.
I have asked for Cubase 7 Elements for Christmas ( gasps from the peanut gallery) I have 5 LE  but want to give a full version a test drive. The upgrade to the  8 is actually a few dollars cheaper this way.
Another good thing was I discovered the Roland A49 now has W8 drivers. Last time I had to use compatibility mode. So I'm sort of happy that this time around there are a few upgrades overall.
Once I've got it all done I'll do an image back up.

One thing was the Samsung evo 480 SSD firmware update, I sort of narrowed the issue back to that. So might not have been Windows fault, but blaming them feels good.

Just thought I'd follow up. Thought it was solved yesterday! I havn't had much time as I was away for a week and then been working.
I had no blue screens up to the point where I ran some more updates last night and I then got one today, It hung for about 20 seconds then re booted automatically just fine. Then I could not get it to do it again? So I guess it's now still unsolved. I still don't like the beep so will try removing RAM and see if the beep goes away. Memory test shows all is good after 6 hours last night.
