Bounce To Stereo Track Sounds Way Diffrerent Than Previous Mix

I hope I have the terms correct but I've been working on a project and wanted to listen to it on my home stereo so I Cntrl 'A' to select all tracks and then click 'bounce to track' and choose stereo and 'What You Hear' in the preset menu, which seem to simply select every option, and then bounce to track

The resulting stereo wav is very much different than what I heard previously. Much louder, very bass heavy, none of the levels seem correct at all. I've tried it a couple of times but same result. I've got Audio and MIDI and envelopes and soft synths and little bit of everything.

I'm missing something.

Be sure to disable any processing you have on the Master buss if that is what you are playing the mixdown back through to avoid double processing.

Thanks teego but isn't the master bus where a lot of processing can take place? Pro Channel on that bus at least?

I mean after you do the bounce, in other words you did the what you hear bounce and that included any effects on the master buss,so after you do the bounce if you play back thru the same buss with the effects still enabled it is applying them again.

Right, but rather than disable FX on the Master bus, just route the output of the "Master Bounce" track direct to Main Outs of the audio interface, bypassing the Master, and solo it.

Or you can invert the phase of the bounced track and verify that it nulls with the live mix on the Master bus. If it doesn't, you probably have FX or synths that have random or non-phase-locked elements that make every playback slightly different. Dithering can also cause the bounced track not to null perfectly, but the difference signal should be very low level.

I have done it that way also, but never thought about inverting phase to check, great idea!

Wow you guys - VERY helpful So appreciate it. And you were exactly right teego, I was playing the bounced track back through the Master bus. I sent it directly to the sound card (Thanks Brundelfly) and it was great.

I'll invert the phase and check as you suggest.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Larry,

Have you considered simply Exporting your mix so that you have a free standing "work-in-progress-date-version-etc.wav" file for your permanent records and to burn a test CD from?

    best regards,
    mike

Mike do you save different versions of the CWP file, in case you want to go back to an earlier mix that you like, but want to build on it etc?

p.s. that Chord Gadget in your signature is really useful - thanks for that.

Yes, I routinely "Save As" with fresh names.

For example "Unique-Song-Name_01a.cwp" may make it up to "Unique-Song-Name_31c.cwp" and any mixes I consider are named similarly so that I can access something.

I tend to use the numbers for big changes and the letter suffix for smaller changes.

I also tend to clean up and simplify my projects as they get near their completion while keeping all the previous .cwp files in case I ever wish to go back and re do something.

Thanks for the feedback about the Chord Gadget... I find it useful as well. :-)

    all the best,
    mike

Good tips Mike - thanks. I guess the actual project files are (relatively) small, so there's not a lot of overhead in creating lots of generational versions, and all of the audio files are used in common anyway.

    exactly.

If you ever et to a point where you think you'll never go back and you are concerned about unused extra audio you can "Save As" with "copy audio" to another folder and you can have a small archive package.

    best regards,
    mike
