Bouncing to audio when using simple instrument tracks

OK, I just started using simple instrument tracks recently. What a great idea!!  So neat and uncluttered and easy!  But I can't get it to export as an mp3.  It says there's no audio.  Do I have to bounce them all to audio first?  (I hope not...what a pain!)

Thanks!

Hi Janet  I am afraid you do have to convert to audio first. The freeze function does a pretty quick job of it in Sonar though so it is not so bad.

sorry Jeff, but that's not correct.  all she needs to do is make sure all of the tracks are highlighted before exporting.  hit CTRL-A after selecting one track then export.  it will work.

    Master Bus?
I routinely export with active synths, selecting the Master Bus as the source, and have never had an issue. I wouldn't think instrument tracks would be an exception. Yes? No?

I don't have an mp3 encoder within Sonar so I tried to duplicate your problem by exporting to wave. If I click the track number it selects both the Midi and Audio data and I can export to wave just fine. If I click the Clip, it selects only the Midi data and I am unable to export and I get this message.

    Maybe this is your problem?

Thanks guys!  I selected all the tracks like I always do (select one, then double click) and I got the message you did, Chappel. Bob, I tried selecting the buses but couldn't seem to get that to work.  I'll try just the master bus and see if that works.

But it works fine the way Reece (Beagle) suggested, so it's done and posted on the forum.  :-)  I find it odd that the normal way of selecting the tracks won't work, but as long as there's a work-around I'm happy.  I love the simplicity of simple instrument tracks!

If you freeze the synth, it converts to audio in the track. The problem is you have the FX bi bypassed. So adding FX to that track requires you to unbypass the FX bin. You can also clone the audio track at that point and delete the synth from the cloned tracks FX bin..... My preference is next on the list>>>>

The other option is to highlight both the synth audio track and the midi track (that's how I do it) and select BOUNCE TO TRACK  and choose WHAT YOU HEAR, TRACKS ONLY and click OK. It bounces it to a brand new track. You can then archive and or hide the 2 source tracks. You now have a simple audio instrument track to work with, and a clean console/track view.

I started working with audio (only) tracks about a year ago. I was in my Dell DAW at the time and the synths were running my CPU numbers up quite high. Working in audio got them down to a reasonable level. I actually liked working in that realm so I continue it in the new DAW.

That's what I've always done, Herb, but since this works, it really cuts down on the workflow and anything that saves me time is sweet.  :-)

Actually, Herb, I'm not positive you can use simple instrument tracks with MC5.  I THINK it was introduced with Sonar 8, but I'm not sure.  It's one track that includes the audio AND midi track so it doesn't clutter up your screen with 3 tracks for every instrument.  The only thing I don't like is that I have to go down to the synth rack to pull up the synth again, (instead of clicking in the midi track) but I can live with that.

Double clicking the track icon in an instrument track should open the synth property page. That's how I do it.

I think you mean 2 tracks? Audio for the synth outputs and midi source.

If you freeze the synth.... all you do is right click the track to access the unfreeze option.

You're probably right about MC not having it, cause I don't think I've even heard of "simple instrument tracks" before....

You can also double click on the synth name in the audio track to open it's GUI. Maybe that's what Chappel was saying. I do that all the time when I use INSERT SYNTH as opposed to doing 2 tracks and manually setting them up.

So many ways to work and it all gets it done.

Well, when I expand the synth track, it becomes 2 tracks, so it's 3 altogether.  And yes, clicking on the synth name in the audio track is the way to do it IF you don't use a simple instrument track.  If you do, then you have to click the track icon.   Next time you're in the neighborhood, stop by and I'll show you. :-)

Simple instrument tracks are hard to imagine when you're used to doing it the other way (like I did for 3 years.)  I can't remember who mentioned it, but once I saw it work, I was hooked.  In the meantime, you're getting great mileage out of your setup AND great results, so I wouldn't change anything unless you just get a hankerin' to. :-)
