Brain Police

So, I was thinking this morning about unused brains.  I was driving in heavy traffic in torrential rain.  You get the picture.

For years now, I've heard that we only use approximately 10% of our brains.  I used to wonder about other possible uses for the vastly dormant 90%.  Since then, however, the myth has been shattered, and journalists and smart people such as Doctors, Scientists, and Guys in White Coats tell us that we actually do use all of our brain, just not all at the same time.  That's bad news for all the psychics, but you've got to suspect that they already knew that was coming, right?

The problem is, that 10% number "Feels" like it's right.  In fact, it often feels like an overestimate.  Some people actually seem to drain the mental capacity from others merely by being in proximity to them.

Since the Guys Who Claim To Know More Than We Do And Charge Heavily For That Priviledge say that we all use all of our brain, I started wondering if, perhaps, the problem is that we just don't use it effectively.  Perhaps, one is just firing electrical sparks between synapses as a means of keeping the engine warm in case this blithering idiot ever figures out what he's doing.  It's kind of like a mental screen saver.

We've all seen people whose mental screen savers are the only indication the cicuitry is still functional.  Mirrors may sometimes be used for this purpose.  In considering this, I thought of the SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Income) project and the old SETI at home application.  You know, that app that utilized your computer's "unused CPU cycles" to help track down ET and tell him to come back and clean up his room?

What if there was a Government Agency tasked with utilizing "unused" brain power?  Everytime I see someone displaying the fact that their brain has gone into Sleep or Hibernate mode, or even when it's gone into Pretending To Be In A Coma mode or We Haven't Had That Spirit Here Since 1969 mode, I watch for the Brain Police to swarm in like a SWAT team.  I hope to see Commander Mitch "Pernicious" Moncrief whip out a bullhorn and call out, "This is the Brain Police!  You, with the Taser, step away from the aquarium and keep your hands away from your brain!"

Hey, if that guy's not going to use it, maybe someone else should.

Of course, I also keep hearing a variant of Cheap Trick's Dream Police in the background whenever I see this elite squadron de-brain someone.  I'd really be able to enjoy this more if all that honking and screaming didn't keep interrupting my "Imagination" time.

Internal affairs in my brain are currently in the middle of an almighty car chase so I couldn't quite get what you were saying.

I think I got about 10% of it though.

If you're posting in the Coffee House, why would you need to even use 99.9% of your brain?

For those of us out there with brains I would think that concentration should help to direct a larger proportion of whatever percentage you happen to be using towards whatever task is at hand. I have never had the occasion to actually measure how much of my brain is in use at any given time . Much like a 6 core cpu I think our brains use certain "cores" at different times depending on demand.

Ability to limit distraction and the ability to retrieve information would also figure in I would think. If your brains hard drive.........in this case the gray drive, were to only retrieve certain portions of your perceived past then you might not really know what happened at that new years party back in 98'.

Add to all of this the fact that so many doctors are perscribing anti-depressants that incidentally they don't sometimes understand how they do what they do,only that it involves dopamine. Disclaimer on said medications stating that "you should stop taking this if you have depressing thoughts"and"if your face starts jumping erratically or you suddenly want to dance the macharena" ....ok I made that last one up.....If I ever were in such a place as to be taking that kind of thing this would be a red flag for me.

I don't think its a choice on how much of our brains we use.Unless we decide to only get 3 hours sleep out of 24 or ingest brain altering substances. In that case you have made a choice to lower your capacity.....Ive heard that too much becan can really muck things up....but who knws? They will probably say becan is perfectly ok in a few years just like eggs and coffee.

People who fast claim that your mind and body "sharpen". I know the last time I went without eating for awhile my mind really sharpened up and I could really concentrate on eating.

I suspect that the Brain Police would be disappointed to find out that more than 90% of my brain is 100% busy at all times thinking about either women or becan.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

The Oxymornonic Department of Destruction (ODD), a small, but harmless department within the Federal Nazgul Operations, Research & Development (FNORD) is now looking into this.  They hope to conclude their investigation and commence the destruction of the world as soon as they figure out how to turn butterflies into lethal killing machines.

In all liklihood, their mothers will make them come in and eat supper first.
