Brainworks bx_digital V2 vs. (say) Fabfilter

Should I spend $129 on this EQ when I have all the others I have (including Fabfilter)?

What would its advantages be? 

probably not,,billy arnell got me in to brainworx.
he glorified them as greatness.
i bought a 2 for 3 deal a while back.i use alot.
dont have fabfilter,cant compare.
i do like the intelligent Presence Shifters.
and its got a few other things i really like about it.
i think i use it more because of how much i paid for it rather than demand which is ludicrist.

i often fall in to this where i buy a plug in for big change and think i need to use it on everything.

if there is one thing ive learned about you over the years its your weakness to offers.  :)

i have read your plug in catalog.
im not sure you need this one,but explore it anyway if you'd like.

Don't do it, Ed. Surely you're too old mature and wise to fall for marketing fluff.

Instead of asking what ___ will do for you, start by asking yourself what you think it might do for you. If you can't make a list, then it probably won't.

Charlie, funny you should mention that BA got you into brainworx. He got me into FabFilter. His legacy lives on.

For what it's worth Ed, all that Brainworx stuff is fantastic. However, it's more geared for mid-side type stuff...which if you aren't careful, can totally destroy a mix. Personally...I don't think you need it, but for someone like me and the stuff I do, nothing does it like the Brainworx stuff. There is a bit of a learning curve as well as some pretty intense trial and error....and...their plugs are pretty intimidating at first. Quite a bit of stuff to play with that may not do anything when you mess with it at first until you learn the uses.

These can also be used as surgical tools as well as special effects tools due to the numerous options given. I personally bought the Brainworx stuff because nothing else I owned did what they did and I had a specific need for it. For me, they are tools I use probably half the time in my productions. So depending on what you're doing over there....the answer is up to you brother. :)

Nah, it's well within your scale. :) I just don't know how often you'd use something like this. You don't HAVE to use it for mid side stuff, but that's pretty much what all their plugs are based on. Like I say Ed...in my opinion, nothing else does what the BW stuff does...you just have to ask yourself if you really need what the BW stuff does.

Can I let you in on a little secret? Shhh...don't tell anyone this. But initially, when I first saw their plugs, I wanted them just because they looked so cool and so intimidating. LOL! The more I read up on them, the more intimidated I got. Then low and behold, I got a project sent to me from a grammy nominated engineer/producer friend of mine in Cali that was having some issues and these plugs were the perfect fix for the issues we were having in that project. The poor guy pretty much got dumped on due to his credentials and was asked to salvage a mix that was in pretty bad shape that he had nothing to do with. Enter me, "the garbage man" to the rescue...and well, without the BW stuff, I don't think I could have helped. So they definitely have uses...it just depends on what your particular needs are.

Now that I have a much better grasp on them having worked with them for a pretty long time, I'm using them more and more on things...but like I say, I use them about half the time these days as they remain a bit more of a "specialty plug" for me. :) Rule of thumb for me and plugs these days is...they must do something that blows my doors off that cannot be achieved with stuff I already own or I don't buy them.

The other thing I've also done is to use/learn the ones I've purchased that haven't gotten much use on a project without using any of my "go to's". You find out really quick whether or not you've bought into hype...and most times, you have and it cures you from buying this stuff so quick. At least that's what's worked for me. I'm definitely done with plugs for a while. I'm perfectly happy with what I'm using these days. The more I buy into new technology, the more I seem to screw myself over.

I have bx_boom, bx_shredspread and bx_rockrack. The first two I have used a few times and they have done the trick. I have not give rockrack a try yet.

I got all of them in December sale at plugin alliance so I did not put out too much cash for them. But so far I like the bx stuff.

Ed, Pro-Q does M/S, too in case you hadn't noticed.

Actually in the back of my mind I probably knew that but then again I may not have really remembered it until I had asked what tool to best use for that situation, which I have obviously must not have thought to need up until now.

I've got to watch more of these Fab videos! 


I got a bundle of them last year, and I've only just begun to take the time to really scratch the surface of what I can do with these, lately. But Dan Worall capably takes us into the deeper depths of the fab ocean and clearly shows us how EQ can shape the sound in marvelous and meticulous ways.
