Brand new to this stuff --- PLEASE help with this one issue!!

All I want to do (right now anyway) is play my digital piano but be able to hear other voices/sounds/instruments. I am pretty tech-saavy and yet cannot figure out how to do this! PLEASE HELP -- thanks so much!

Go to the help files and do tutorial no. 8 it deals with softsynths. Your digital piano does midi i asume, then it can send the signal that is routed thru MC from a midi track thru an audio track with a softsynth in it and sound like anything you want it to.

This is called Latency, it has to do with the time it takes the signal to leave the keyboard and run thru the system, and get back to the speakers.

Things that will help are running the latency buffer on fast, this takes a ton of CPU power and ram, as well as a sound card with the ability to run at low latency settings.

To start with set the buffer at fast (options audio) and then set the buffer setting to 128 and see if that works. If it runs okay, without pops and crackles, then bump the buffer setting to 64, and see what happens.

Ok --- I opened tutorial #8 and it says to:

Open a MIDI project--for this tutorial use tutorial8.cwp.

I can not find this tutorial ANYWHERE!?!?!

I don't see sleep listed in the tutorial...it is not an option in the pull downs...NO SLEEP FOR YOU

Since my keyboard is only a digital piano and won't "play" other sounds (IOW, if a midi sound is 'fiddle', the keyboard plays it as piano), is there a way to hear the output out of the actual computer???

Also, would a keyboard controller fix this (meaning, will it be able to play all sounds?)

I discovered something else. In the midi settings, I click as the output "microsoft midi mapper" and it tells me that I have not selected a midi output ... ???

    Ignore MIDI mapper, it's meaningless.

Is your digital piano connected to your computer via MIDI out to MIDI in using a MIDI interface?

If so you can use your piano to play softsynths like Dreamstation.

    What soundcard do you have?

I'm not quite sure what soundcard I have actually -- my hardware manager says "conexant ac97" .... Yes, the digital piano is connected via a midi cable. And whereas I can play the synth and hear sounds on the computer, it doesn't work the other way if the sound is NOT piano .... Any advice/instructions you have I will gladly follow -- I'm a pretty quick study on techy stuff ... Thanks!

OK, I'm working with HS-4, so hope this is how it goes in MC - try 'insert', 'DXi synth' 'Dreamstation'.

If you highlight the track that appears you should hear your piano play the sound from Dreamstation, not your piano.

    Eric,
Did you get through tutorial #8? If you are using the Edirol VSC, those sounds default to piano, but you can change them to other instruments and play them through the computer. Just set the output from the soft synth to your soundcard.

Oh I may not have explained correctly. I am able to to play instruments through the computer. What I am NOT able to do is to open up files that exist already (pre-loaded sound samples within cakewalk) and play them through the computer.

ok, let's back up a bit. What, exactly, are you looking at? What is the file type, and even the folder they are in?
Give us an explanation of what it is you are doing. Overload us with info. I don't think we quite have the full picture yet.

    Ok. Fair enough!

I open cakewalk and go to file/open. There's a folder called "sonar sample content." I double click on "americana" and there are parts for fiddle, bass, banjo and drums. The program asks me if I want to send data to the midi player. If I hit yes or cancel, it seems to do the same thing: when I hit 'play,' I hear the song through my keyboard, and ONLY my keyboard, and the only sound I hear is the piano and the bass, because bass is one of the 14 sounds the keyboard has.

Then you need to insert EDIROL VSC after you open that project, just like it explains in TUTORIAL #8.

MIDI is DATA ONLY. It is not sound. If you don't have a synth for MIDI to trigger, then you won't hear it. Since you have a HARDWARE SYNTH for the MIDI to trigger...that's where you're hearing it! If you want to hear it thru the computer speakers, then you need a softsynth like EDIROL.

Again, that's explained in Tutorial #8.

Ooorrr, you can attach an audio cable from the keyboard to the sound card and use MC to trigger the keyboards synth, eithe way yoiu always have to think routing where does the command start and end and what path does it take.

You hit keys on keyboard, it sends data to MC thru a midi track, midi track outputs to audio track with Synth in it, audio track outputs to sound card, sound card attaches to speaker, speaker fires off a barage of sound that then enters and please the ear!.

Routing it all in the routing.....

Side note, the reason the audio track has a synth in it is that one was added to the synth rack and that created the audio track.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!
