Breathe
Here is a new song that I have just finished writing, tracking and mixing. I have played around with different levels for a while and checked on multiple systems (I so need Arc 2) and I think I have everything sitting about right. Please listen if you get a chance and let me know if it is sounding balanced on your systems. Thanks. Breathe link: https://soundcloud.com/michaeljhanson/breathe

Mike, you just keep getting better in every way. Your vocal on this is fun to listen to because I can hear the feeling in your voice. The mix is clean and polished, and it conveys your message very well. Way to go!

Starise, Thanks for listening, bro. Glad that you really like this song. This one is a bit of a rewrite from many years ago. I kept the original chord patterns, but the lyrics and chorus where completely redone. Lynn, Thank you as well. I'm starting to get a small collection of songs that work. Hopefully they will just keep coming.

This is great Mike! I love the lyrics, and the way you sang them. Everything sounded in its place to me, but I had to listen on my phone, so I can't really critique the mix. But going by your other songs I've heard, I'm sure this one sounds good as well! It sounded good on my phone, of that helps.

I like this song a lot Michael. It's very catchy and the lyrics are uplifting. The production is great, I like the guitar solo, nice vocals. Everything is in order! The tempo drags a little sometimes but that gives it an interesting kind of old-school vibe to it. I like it!!

+1 on the lead guitar tone and the lead. I especially liked when the vocal harmony kicked in, that really amped up the energy in the song for me. This is well mixed, well arranged, well performed. Great job.

At the moment I am listening through a cheap set of headphones and the snare is very bright and sticks out, I'll have another listen through a better system when I can. On the flip side, everything else works really well, through said crappy headphones, so I'm assuming it'll work through anything else, and this tells me that the mix is great. I think the song itself is a winner and I really like whatever effects you are using on the vocal, particularly the word "breathe". I guess this is the crux of the song, it works well.

nice uplifting number ... got me ready to go out for my sunday afternoon walk with the dog ... i thought you were singing i pray for you at first .. probably cos i saw the 'christian rock' part ... is it breath for you ? ... also .. im not a musician .. so please dont be annoyed if im being silly .. but are the drums supposed to do that at 54 seconds ? ... like they skip out of time briefly still hearing it as pray for you at times .. i think those words go well too :) i think i should listen to some more christian rock music .. think am ready for it now God Bless x

Hi, Listened a couple of times - usually a good sign - and agree with Brian the drums at the 50 mark do sound a bit 'clipped'. On an absolutely personal level and not as a critique, I would like to hear the vocals on the verses delivered a little lower (quieter) and slower (a longer pause between each line) but presented how you want it is more important, so well done. Regards, Vincent

Leadfoot, Thank for listening man; glad you liked this one. I have the same issue quite often, in that the only time I can find to listen is often on my iPhone when I can find a quite moment. Ralph,Glad you liked this one and thanks for the listen. Hopefully...not to much of a drag. Chasmcg,Thanks for your comments on the Lead guitar tone. I went back an forth on the amp choice and tone. I am using an Amplitube Orange sim on this lead and it seems to come out fairly nice and convincing. Oleman,Thanks brother for listening. Rebel,Thanks for giving this one a listen. Yes the snare has a bright punchy tone to it. Hopefully it is not too much, but I wanted to kind of emphisise an acoustic "woody" sounding snare for this song. Incidentally, the preset for the AD drums had the snare even more pronounced than this and I toned it back a some. The only effecs on the vocals are reverb, PC LA2A compression, and PC Quad EQ; everything else is just me.

Brianb, Thanks for the listen. Yes, the lyrics are ...breathe for you. I have listened to that area of the drums a couple of times and I have check to see if anything snuck by me and clipped. No, clipping. I assume that you are talking about the timing of the drum fill then. I can listen to it a little more and maybe I can go with a different fill if it sounds off. They are premade fills in Addictive Drums that I just dragged and dropped in place. Lostandconfused, Thanks for listening and commenting. I can still throw SPAN up and see if it shows a clip at that :54 time spot as well, just as another check. Thanks on the vocals. Your suggestion for changing the delivery is interesting, but I think I will stick with what I have. I like this arrangement pretty well.

Good song. It should be a nice gear change when set in with some of your other songs. I don't have any suggestions...It sounds fine to me.

The song is good. On the production side; I'd vary the snare hits. A little too robotic for my tastes. The last snare hits seem out of time. The lead vox is a bit too buried and seems to have too much compression.

Good work I thought, overall could have more bass frequencies in the mix?

Nice song and well played. Being that I like drums they don't sound that bad at all. A tweak here and there maybe needed, but overall it sounded good on my system thru my Truth monitors. Nice instrumentation, vocals and lyrics and as for the mix, you may want to consider what Bapu had to say, as I tend to agree. Peace and Blessings, John

Clint, Bapu, Wayne & John, Thank you very much for listening and commenting. Sorry, I am just getting around to responding, but work has been eating my lunch lately. Ed, I will get back into the drum midi files and do a little velocity randomizing. It's tedious to do it by hand, but that seems to work best. I am liking this song myself and think that the song is probably worth the effort to do what ever touch ups might be necessary. I agree that the vocals need to be just slightly louder or more prominent. I might try a couple of things there. Ed, I am not sure on the snare hits out of time if you are talking about some of them at the end of the song? I will overall, check the midi hits again and see if anything looks drastically out of time. Someone mentioned above about the timing at the :54 mark. That is right where I have my first fill into the Chorus. The fills in Addictive Drums seem a little strange to me. Many of them start out with the drum sticks clicking together, almost to find the beat, and then proceed into the fill. If I only have a 1/2 or 1/4 measure to fit a fill into, I am trimming them to fit at what seems to be an appropriate spot. I am not sure that I am doing a very good job with that and it seems like sometimes, I am messing up some subtle timing when I do this. I reworked that fill at :54 this morning and it sounded better, but ran out of time to do much more before work. Hopefully, I can do a little more tweaking this weekend.

I have uploaded a newer version of this song. - I started by replacing the fill before the first chorus and I think this one sounds like a smoother transition.
- Then I varied the snare hit velocities through out and chose some different random hits as well.
- Worked on the bass a little to make it more even through out.
- Lastly, I raised the vocal levels slightly by grouping them together and moving everything just a tad up.
If any of you guys that made some of these suggestions gets a chance, I would greatly appreciate if you could give this one another listen and let me know if it made an improvement. Same link above. Thanks for everyone's help.

Just listened. Really nice vocal and song. Arrangement sound very good. I think overall mix is distorting. Did you check your busses and master out to make sure it wasn't clipping? I really like the presence and guitar playing.

Michael, Cool song, like it a lot. Overall really good performance and arrangement. I hear some clipping and distortion though out as if the song is right on the edge of tipping over. Might want to check your levels or final processing chain. Regards

Hey Guys, Thanks for listening. Yes, I checked all tracks and master bus for clipping. I have a brick wall in the last position of the master bus as well. I'm actually doing very little Limiting on this song on the master bus; I am probably only lowering by 1.5 overall. What has happened to me once before while using X3 is that I have suddenly had a stay track going direct out to the interface and by passing the master bus. I couldn't figure out on that occasion how it had happened. I didn't look for that on my final bounce, but will later this evening when I get home. Edit: checked all tracks and busses, no clipping. When I started turning off FX's one by one, I discovered the problem. I had added Waves R Bass to the bass track and for some reason, it seems to mess with other tracks as well. I created a nice bass tone, but some how is leaking onto the main vocal track and distorting that. I am going to work on this with fresh ears in the morning.

Thanks Brothers! I uploaded a new version this morning. I turned R Bass off and tweaked the bass settings a little. I haven't had a chance to check this version on other systems, but not much has been adjusted. Hope this one sounds clear and undistorted in the vocals.

Thanks Mark. It's close. The Bass might be just a little to loud now. Sounded good on the monitors, but a little loud on other sources. (I still need Arc 2).

Ok, so it's got this feel-good thing going on...but what's your beef with rain? You know what Lennon said, you might as well be dead. Seriously though, not much into the lyrics on this, but it's good music, vocals fit and Petty would be proud. I thought it sounded a little distorted though.

Voda, Thank you for listening. It actually means a lot to me that, even though this Genre is not your cup of tea, you think the music is good. Yes, I always seem to have a little of that Petty thing going on. I stopped fighting it and learned to roll with it.

Nice one Mike. It really has a groove that pulls you into the song and the lyrics keep you there. Great job on the vocals. I too am getting a bit of what sounds like distortion on the overall song --- but --- that probably is my antiquated and cheap equipment ;>)

Thanks for listening and commenting Freddy. I know that I don't here any type of distortion on the wav. file that I have been listening too. I'm not sure if I could be getting a bad file conversion uploading to Sound Cloud? I am bouncing to a wav, then to a 320 mp3 and then into Sound Cloud. Maybe too many conversions of the same file. I will try to listen to Sound Cloud with a good pair of head phones this weekend.
