Brew #2

A dark and robust Octoberfest German heritage beer.  Very dark with a creamy head.

A few pictures.

A careful slow pour is required to avoid a 1" or more head. You can see how dark this brew is.

Let a little sunshine through it and man..... wow, what a beautiful color.

Relaxing on the back year deck....

While it looks good, nothing beats drinking it setting outside in the late afternoon, after supper.

Extra good.....

Very nice but...  You DO know it's about as far away from October as possible, roight?

I'm sure I'd love one of those though...

It is really not that hard to brew a nice beer in the comfort of your own home.

Kinda like a second hobby for me now.   The worst part is waiting the 5 weeks or so it takes to arrive at a semi-matured brew.....ready to drink. Of course, you can shorten the time a few weeks and get something drinkable in about 3 weeks if you are really thirsty and in a hurry..... I let it go 5 weeks before I start twisting the caps. It is recommended to at least go 3/2 but longer in the bottle will not hurt.

BTW: this is the same beer my daughter mistook for a Pepsi a few days ago.... some of you may remember that. I bottle it in soda bottles and keep it in the refrigerator.

I don't know if I could bottle that nice stuff...  I have friends up here that make their own beer (no surprise, I'm near Portland, the micro-brew capital of the World of course!) and they all keg their beer.

yeah... a keg would be  a nice way to go.  The brew keg I use holds 2 gallons, so I use a bunch of 16 and 20 ounce cleaned out soda bottles.

We are starting to get more micro and craft brewers here in NC..... more in the cities..... but I brew my own and it comes out less then half the price of a nice craft brew in the store.

Besides, it's fun to walk by the brew keg and every now and then , I stick my nose in the box and take a sniff ..... the malt and yeast.... ohhhhhhhh.

I place the brew keg under a large cardboard box to keep out the light and regulate the temperature.  I have some vents at the top & bottom...... I take a sniff every other day or so.  Teasing myself.

Once I bottle it, I keep the bottled brew under the box for the same reasons.... after about a week and a half I will sample one bottle...... I stick it in the fridge for a few hours to cool it down. If it;s matured sufficiently, I put the rest of the bottles in the fridge and begin drinking through the collection.

In my younger, beer drinking days (in the States) I was served very cold beer. In fact, I remember bars that would keep the serving glasses iced.

On a trip to Germany (one of my relatives owned a pub in the Black Forest) I remember the beer being a lot darker, bitter and warm and I requested a colder beer.

    I think they're still laughing.

I'm also a home brewer.  I have a Porter and Marzen (Octoberfest) in buckets right now.  The Porter has about another week before it's ready to bottle, the Marzen a little longer lagering at a friends house who has a lagering fridge with temperature control.

I moved over from extract only after reading Chris Colby's article on countertop partial mash brewing back in a 2006 issue of BYO, and never looked back.  The same friend I mentioned earlier is an all grain brewer, he has a nice BrewTree setup and two very nice 7.3 gallon conical fermenters, I'm not that committed, but always have something in the carboys throughout the year.

I do mostly still bottle what I make, no real kegging system, but I do have a few Party Pigs that work quite well for keeping something on tap in the fridge for company or taking some with me to gatherings.
If you love good beer, it's a great hobby to get into.

Those pictures are making me very thirsty. I am reminded of the old Flann O'Brien poem:

    'The Workmans Friend'

When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.

When money's tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.

When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.

When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.

In time of trouble and lousey strife,
You have still got a darlint plan
You still can turn to a brighter life -
A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.

Flann was one of the finest writers of the 20th century and died a raging alcoholic. One time a TV crew came to  interview him and his wife had hidden all the booze. Flann locked himself in the bathroom for 20 minutes and availed himself of the bottle of Jameson's he had stored in the toilet header tank.

I am also reminded of the most ideal beer delivery system I have ever seen, this off Letterman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wK-TXJPiDQ

I miss making homebrew. I still have all the equipment but I don't have a cool enough place to ferment in the summer here in Vegas. I need a big enough fridge to put a 5 gallon carboy in.
