Bricked my 700-C updating firmware to 1.3x

Greetings!

I updated all the firmware in the 700-R first, and that went well, including the Fantom update.

Next, I tried to update the 700-C to the current version, but something went wrong.  The progress bar on the PC app showed the file being transfered to the 700-C (and yes, I did select that as the destination), but the Console itself never showed receiving any of the file, it was stuck on 0%.

When I flipped the DIP switch 8 back to OFF, nothing worked.  The R doesn't recognize the Console anymore, and I can't even get Win 7 to recognize the hardware so it will load the "Console Direct" drivers.

Simply put, I think I bricked the Console.

What options do I have now?

Thanks,
-doug-

Contact Cakewalk support-Ryan Munnis. Get him to walk you through it. You're a little unclear about when you fliped the switch back when you were on a stuck update. Something must have been set wrong, these updates go in pretty quick. It sounds like you installed the console standalone USB drivers. You'll need to clean up your registry now. It's important to set the sample rate knob to right setting when you do the updates, Try to recreate the steps you took and see what you might have missed.

    Hi Zelmo,

This may sound dumb but are you sure the DIP switch is actually set right.  When I did the update I had a similar problem.  After I had done the VS700R and Fantom updates, I flipped the console into standalone mode to update the console firmware but could not get them to install.

It turns out I thought I had flipped the switch but didn't feel that click of it engaging.  Since my DIP switch panel does not line up the best with the little window, it looked to be up but was not.  I gave it a little nudge and felt the switch engage.  The rest of the install worked after that.  One other thing I don't think it explicitly states in the instructions is that you should not have the VS700R and VS700C connected together with the special cable.  Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Hi Guys,

This is tricky. If you wiped the firmware, it might need someone from Roland U.S. to directly service it.

I HAVE recovered from this situation with a VS-700C before. The steps are very, very specific though. I can't guarantee they'll work, but here's the approach I would take:

    1) Put the VS-700C DIP switches into stand-alone mode (DIP switch 1 "On"). Connect the USB cable to the VS-700C only and power on the unit. (ignore the fact that Windows can't install drivers)
    2) Download the "V-Studio 700C Stand Alone Windows Drivers 2.0" from here: http://www.cakewalk.com/D...aspx?Prod=V-Studio+700
    3) Save this file to your desktop.
    4) Right-click on the downloaded folder and select "Extract...". Make sure to extract this folder to your desktop as well.
    5) In Windows, open the Run Command by holding down the Windows key on your keyboard and pressing "r"
    6) Type in the following and then click [OK]: devmgmt.msc
    7) Locate the VS-700 in your Device Manager. This may be listed under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" or under "Other Devices" and will probably have an exclamation point next to it
    8) Right-click on "VS-700" or "VS-700C" and select "Update Driver Software"
    9) When asked "How do you want to search for driver software", select [Browse my computer for driver software]
    10) Afterwards, on the "Browse for driver software..." window, click on [Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer]
    11) On the "Select the device driver you want to install for this hardware" window, click on the [Have Disk] button
    12) On the "Install From Disk" window, click on the [Browse] button on the bottom right corner
    13) Navigate to the folder that you downloaded and extracted in the Locate File menu. This will be something like:

    C:\Users\~USERNAME~\Desktop\VS700C_StandAlone__Win_Drivers_v2.0\Windows_Win7x64_drivers\VS700C_Win7x64_v200\Files

    14) Select the "RDIF1088" file and click [Open]
    15) Click [OK] on the "Install From Disk" window and then click [Next] on the "Select the device driver..." window.
    16) A progress bar should indicate the driver is being updated followed by a screen saying "Windows has successfully updated your driver software".
    17) Click [Close] and then close the Device Manager

At this point, your drivers should be re-installed which is what you will need to re-install the firmware.

Now, and this is the most important part, you will want to update the firmware. You can follow the instructions at http://www.cakewalk.com/s...der.aspx?ID=2007013192

Definitely pay close attention and follow it step-by-step. I hope this helps. If not I'd definitely give Roland U.S. a ring. It's hard to service firmware via the internet

I'd like to hear how you make out regardless.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

At the same time I posted my original question, I contacted Roland support via e-mail and the responded quickly with the suggestion that I take it to an authorized repair station.  I'm lucky that I live in Denver because we have Mars Amp Repair and they're great.

I dropped off the 700-C the next day and had it back fixed and upgraded in exactly one week.  The repair charge was basically one hour of labor.

    I'm back in business!
