Brighter Day
Second track recorded this month in X1. http://soundcloud.com/gwyn-maughan/brighter-day Really happy with the vocal sound I got on this. Helps to have a good singer at your disposal, but the Sonitus plugs did no harm either....

good work the guitar sounds very "restrained" in the mix almost like it was low passed way too low. I'd bring it up a little volume-wise in the mix, too. pad is nice - good ambient sound, but it is obvious when it drops out, I'd try to smooth that out a little. nice vox - good work!

Janet, elix, Beagle - thanks for listening and thanks for the feedback. Beagle - I originally had 5 tracks of guitar on this song, but the mix was a mess. Stripped all but 1 from the song and added the synth. Changed the flavour quite a bit (and lost the original riff the song was written around) but I think you're right - it's prob not loud enough. I'll work on smoothing out the pad - cheers for that. Good constructive critiicism. Nice to have another set of ears. Gwyn

i like this song Gwyn! as you say vocals are cool. deffo needs some work on the guitars though - what you using? personally i always like at least double tracking the rhythm, hard panned left and right, then in the chorus you can come in with a bright jangly 3rd guitar more centrally placed (or 3rd/4th guitars panned less hard). as it stands, you could add a little stereo chorus via a buss to give the guitar more presence and movement. i could also imagine a cool little delayed guitar motif in the chorus too...and some kind of break in the middle. to me sounds like the scratch instrumental track as a guide for the vox, and the song is definitely worth investing time in!

I really like the eerie little keyboard bit. Bass sounds good. I would do the guitar a bit brighter, but that's just a matter of taste. Good songwriting and overall a well balanced mix. Well done.

I kinda like the semi lo-fi sensiblity you got going on here with this mix. It works. Reminded me a bit of that "Pumped Up Kicks" tune that is so huge this summer.

James, mcourter, Mark - thanks for the feedback - glad you liked it. Mark - the guitar is a Parker through a Peavey Vyper. Line out to my audio interface. Find it hard to get a really good hot signal though. Will try micing up the amp, but getting some noise from the stock Stinger picks ups - so need to clear that up. Thanks for the tips re double tracking, panning etc. Will try them out this weekend. Have a solo I want to get down on this song too. Cheers - Gwyn
