'Bring me There' - Tim Wilkinson

Some of you might remember the last SMB tune had a 'cameo' vocal by our friend Tim. Well, he was inspired by that melody and title, and came up with a complete new song;

Vocals and guitar by Tim, a little dabbling in Sonar by me, and beautifully mastered by Danny Danzi.

You guys always put out a nice product, this is no exception.  There is always that 'bit of the Isles" sound in your songs, as it should since songs reflect our lives.

Very pretty song.  I like pretty songs... so that is a compliment.  Very nice.

Big, spacious, yet simple.  This could be a signpost for all songwriters that tend to throw everything including the kitchen sink into a mix.  Oops, I'm talking to myself again.

It took me a little while to warm up to this song, but by about halfway I was hooked and by the end I was remarking to myself how beautiful it was.

Don't know what else to say.

This song, production, and vocal blew me away.  I got chills by the 2nd verse.  I love everything about it.  The lyrics are awesome.

That's awesome James.  Everyone did a fantastic job.  Any idea what the vocal treatment is?  Almost sounds like a whisper track going on.  Probably just the verb though.

First I was about to comment that it's almost too perfect ... that some roughness here and there would make it more "here". But how could I say a direct man+guitar take is too perfect  .... ?? :o/

Beautiful song, stunning voice, stunning performer, excellent studio work. So much so that I'm depressed ;o)

I just made my first vocal recordings in three years, and was deeply discouraged to hear how much practice, effort and concentration it takes for me to get something even remotely usable from my throat.

Hi Robby, no reverb at all added, just the room. Tim recorded the vocals and guitar at the same time, onto one track. Danny used some spatial enhancement when he mastered, to spread things out a little.

I'll ask Danny's permission to share some of his mastering secrets, he really did a fine job on this track.

For those interested in what I did: We basically got a 2-track stereo mix that was of course a great performance. However, it was quite loaded with low mids in the 200-400 range...so cleaning that up really brought it to life. Removed a few little rumbles and sweetened up the highs to give it some air to breathe. The first thing that did was bring the acoustic guitar to life a bit more and also gave the vocals a nice presence. Due to how this was recorded though, the voice had a bit of a strange artifact happening at 3k so I had to remove that. It gave it the sound of a heavy smoker in a sense..so curbing this really helped.
 
From there, I wanted to try to bring the vocals out of the center pan field a bit and just make them sound a bit more epic and extend outward a bit. I used a Brainworx M/S plug (sorry James, forgot to tell you about that one lol) to get a bit more control over things and used a PSP stereo enhancer to give it a bit more separation without making it sound too fake or HAAS'd. This also uniformed the reverb a bit better and made it come to life. No additional verb from my end was used. I just opened it up a bit as it sounded a bit more mono than it is now.
 
After I was happy there, a few more of my mastering tools, some tweaks and a Waves S-1 and it was ready to be dithered and limited. That's about it. I think it really took a turn for the better considering what we had to start with. The performance was of course great, but there was definitely lots of boxiness and a bit too much warmth going on. However, the mix still would have stood on its own without me being involved. Thanks again James...I hope we can work together again at some point. :) And thanks to everyone for the kind words. :)

Absolutely lovely song and performance. It has a Celtic lilt to the music, which adds to the wistfulness of the tune.
